I noticed that most of the negative responses aired weere from people who are not anywhere near the Somerville Theatre. Many of you may not know this, but that theater is more of an "art house" and not a contemporary "movie theater". They mainly play foreign, and independant films, and the patrons are generally very respectful, because they've actually gone there to see a film. beer and wine is served at gallery openings, and nobody complains-- this art just happens to be moving on a screen.
I really don't see a problem with it, as long as the theater employees are monitored for checking peoples' I.D.s. Even in a contemporary movie theater, if people want to pay the prices that theaters set, it's their money and their choice. Movies aren't just for kids, remember.

I did not realize (headchunck) that you had to live near Somerville to be able to go there.
People from outside the area travel to the movies also.
Is there anywhere left where you can go and not come home smelling like beer or wine??
I have wine with dinner etc. But the movies??
If I want to drink and see a movie, I will rent a movie and take it home, That way I will not be driving, in case you guys forgot, it is not legal to drink and drive in MA.
And the last time I checked, the movies playing today are soooo far from ART, even the ones you say are "foreign and independent"
Give me popcorn and soda anyday.

Um, their movies today were:
Volver, an R-Rated spanish art film.
Pan's Labyrinth, an R-Rated spanish art film,
300, an R-Rated gladiator movie,
Last King of Scotland, a R-rated art movie.
Not exactly showing Teenage Mutant Turtles there.
Furthermore, the theater doesn't even have a parking lot and is located in an area full of public transportation options, plus their website tells people to take the T instead of driving.
Plus, while you certainly don't have to be from Somerville to go there, let's face it, this is a neighborhood movie house . AND, just as anyone from elsewhere can go there, nobody HAS to go there. Therefore, people who don't like the idea of beer and wine at the movies can pay $9.00 and go to the 20-screen chain theaters where teenagers are noisy, the theaters smell like nacho cheese, and there is no beer. People who are adults and can handle one or two adult beverages can pay $7.00 and see a film at a cinema like the Somerville Theater where teenagers rarely go, see a movie on a human scale, and so forth.
This isn't even the first theater to do this, I'm not even sure why it is news. Places all over the state serve beer without problems; it's not like Regal or AMC are looking to do this.
They sell beer and wine at the "Premier" theaters at the Framingham 16.
I thought adults just went to movies drunk? j/k? But sure, if someone wants to buy a $7.00 beer go for it and make money off them
