The Motion Picture Association of America announced that smoking cigarettes in movies could give films an "R" rating. Do you think the number of smoking scenes should affect a movie's rating?

Sure; smoking is an adult activity. The same standard should be applied to drinking, if it isn't already. However, if the MPAA really wants to limit kids' exposure to bad on-screen activities, they should put the kibosh on movies that show car chases and speeding. Our teenagers are killing themselves imitating movies like "The Fast and The Furious" (which was rated PG-13).

By the way, this question reminds me of a GREAT movie I saw called "Thank You for Smoking". HILARIOUS! There was a scene in which the tobacco lobbyist was trying to convince a big movie producer to feature smoking in his movie. Such a funny scene. I highly recommend that movie (although it is rated R).

I don't think so. Kids see people smoking all the time, smokers are all over the place. I think we need to remember once again that it's up to us to teach our kids right and wrong. They don't always do everything that they see in the movies.

I think it's better that we teach kids to think than to try and shield them from everything that we don't want them to see. Eventually, whether you like it or not, your kids will see somebody smoke, hear somebody swear, be offered a drink or whatever else. If you teach them at a young age that smoking is disgusting, maybe they won't ever start.
