My answer would be to never run alone. Although one should never victimize the victim in cases like this, a very small portion of the blame should be the lack of common sense.

In a world where a person should never leave their place if they are naive, or a person who thinks it cannot happen to them.

I think there is less common sense in this world, and the lack of brain power/real thought, this kind of mindset crosses every avenue of life today..unfortunately for the victims.

This would take hours of typing just to analyze all that is wrong with people (generally) today.

My finale answer to your question is, wake up america, there are people out there that are out to hurt you, and don't be so naive to think that it cannot happen to you, play the defense card.

the woman was running around 11:00pm by herself, in an area that is not well lit.
WHY?
In today's society you must look out whereever you go, whatever you are doing you need to protect yourself.
I feel for the victim in this case, however
this is not the 1950's where you used to be able to leave your doors open at night,
this is a society where everyone is out for themselves , you need to have street smarts,
you need to take precautions,
Why aren't the police setting up a sting
in the area, like when they set the stings in the old "combat zone" looking for guys looking for those working girls.

I found that a "chest holster" held your sidearm tightly on your chest and minimized bouncing.

A woman jogging alone in that unlit area at that time of night is living in a fantasy world if she thinks she's gonna be perfectly safe. Although I feel very badly for her. She wasn't using her head.

Though I feel terribly about what happened to this woman over the weekend, I don’t think the precautions I normally take will change. However, there are several things both citizens and the city can do to help lessen the number of such attacks. Our public grounds should either be closed at sunset, or better patrolled. Our citizens, and women in particular, should be more aware that being out alone at night can be dangerous, and more people should take advantage of local police departments and schools that offer self defense classes. If we all do a little bit, we can help to greatly reduce attacks of this nature.

body alarms if you do not want to carry a weapon, buddy system, both, learn self defense, midnight patrol, glow in the dark clothing, anything that could cover up the feminine look, all of the above.

all these self defense ideas are great however
we seem to be missing the biggest point here.
WHY WAS SHE RUNNING AT OR AROUND 11:00 PM BY HERSELF IN AN UNLIT AREA IN TODAYS SOCIETY?

Exactly, Legendkiller!!!!!! I wouldn't wish that attack on anyone, but, a little common sense could have prevented this from occurring.

The victim is on trial here i see ,, what about the thug who assaulted her .. We have gone astray here yes i know it wasn't avery cleaver choice of time to be there .. But should we not have some thoughts of protection from animals like that for our mothers sisters wives daughters .Why is no one asking about how the police patrol that area hopefully not driving by at the speed limit or faster ... Nothing would of prevented this from happening he would of just found a victim somewhere..

P.S. This is why rape is not reported ninty percent of the time the victim goes on trial first ...... I like the iranians justice catch em and castraight em

Jimwolf.. It has been written up until your message how badly people felt about the woman, and that no one should have to go through it.

Shared responsibility is tough to swallow for a lot of people today, isn't it? The woman clearly did not use any grey matter before she went jogging at that time of night, whether the place is well lit or well guarded.

If a person has not been living in a cave all their life hidden away from societies woes, then one using their brain to actually think for a change would defend herself by NOT going alone anywhere at night.

It is a sorry state of affairs that we have to use our basic animal skills to survive these days, but the fact is that there are predators out there just waiting for a child or a woman alone. Why give them the opportunity? It is like swimming with a few sharks, you know they are out there, but why put yourself at odds with a shark?

Each person must take responsibility for their actions... right or wrong. This is a problem today.. no one does... let's blame the other person first. Like a parent that turns their head for that infamous second or two, and the child falls out a 3rd/4th floor window to their death. Blame the window, not the parent that should be keeping their eye on the child at all times, and if you know that the screen is not going to hold back child, then close the window or put bars up..the parent is just as much at fault.. no common sense..

The victim wouldn't have been a victim if she had just used her head, very well spoken Justin Franklin, you should open up a COMMON SENSE SPA!!! HOW CAN PEOPLE THINK IT CAN NEVER HAPPEN TO THEM, " MAYBE THEY THE ONES WHO WEAR SUPER POWER OUTFITS, THE ONES WHO SAYS "NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TOO ME THIS TIME OF THE NIGHT IN THIS SECLUDED AREA."....JOKE JOKE JOKE...SOMEONE IS ALREADY TO GIVE THESE KOOKS WHAT THEY WANT...THEN COMPLAIN

Here is the problem with the theory that she shouldn't be out at 11....

It assumes that criminals will prevail. I hate that theory, the theory that assumes, and accepts, that life should be lived hidden away to protect ourselves from uncontrollable behavior.

I do not think it is unreasonable to expect to be able to safely run in a well lit area abutting a major traffic route. Self defense, snitching, cell phone cameras, mace....whatever. I'm comfortable reading this headline:

"Female Jogger Shhots and Kills Would-be Rapist." Sub-headline: "Mayor Calls her a Hero."

Assumption? Proven fact..what time was this woman outside running? Criminals can find a way around almost anything.
Listen Chip, only those who do not use their brain, chances are they will (If alone), at some point be attacked if they figure they can go running after 11pm.
Unless there is a cop every 5-10 feet covering the Esplanade, it is more likely than not, that at some point within the year, a person will be sexually molested.
If you had a daughter would you encourage her to go running alone like this woman at 11'ish where hardly anyone is around?
Criminals do prevail more often.. only a small percentage.. very small percentage are actually captured and convicted.
For some people maybe it would be safer if they were hidden away. Generally speaking some do not even use common sense nor the brain they were born with.

Anytime I go out, outside of work I carry my firearm! You never know when trouble is going to come looking for you.

Running makes it a little harder to carry but you can still do it, I don't know why young women and people in general think something like this can't happen to them.

And that police are going to be there, sure they will be there to take the report or take pic's of the body after the fact but it is very rare that they are going to be there when the crime happens.

If your a young woman get your permit or a FID and get some OC to carry with you. Protect yourself don't think police or someone else will be there to do it for you.

CHIP,

I love that headline!!!

Female Jogger Shots and Kills Would-be Rapist." Sub-headline: "Mayor Calls her a Hero."

But for one you would never see that in the globe or hearld do to they are ran by very anti-gun people. And most news wouldn't want to let the fact out that firearms save a lot of lives in legal gun owners hands here in Mass.

If that got out and the fact gun laws don't stop criminals becuase they don't shop at gun stores, do to the fact of not having a permit what would people think then?

And the Mayor of boston stand up for a legal gun owner?? yea that will be the day!
