It is absolutely not ok to take office supplies from your place of employment. It is theft. You can, and should, be fired for it.

I can't believe this question even needs to be asked. Taking office supplies home is a nice way of saying, "You're stealing from the company." Office supplies cost money, so by taking office supplies home you are costing your company money.

All you high and mighty types, does this mean you NEVER use the copy machine for personal use? NEVER make personal phone calls on company time?? Use your computer to surf the Internet to shop at Amazon for X-mas gifts??? Technically it is all stealing but I bet we all do it.

I use to do undercover work for large corporations, and they would send me to different states to help them with theft. I was in California one time for about a month, I was given a job in this one department, when after that month was over, I had found 3 execs, a security person, and a dock worker involved in theft.
They stole computers and components, office supplies, and various other stuff. They were setting up shop elsewhere for a business.
By the time the complete investigation was done by the police there, they estimated around 30 or so thousand dollars worth of stuff had been taken.
Crime does not pay.. and you do not know who you could be working with.

No skyjockey, we DON"T all do it.... I have a scanner at home. If I need a copy, I do it there. I have a cell phone. If I need to make a personal call from work, I use that. Also, quite often, you can simply ask your employer if it's ok to make that copy you need, or that important phone call. Usually, they will say yes, and appreciate the fact that you respected them enough to ask permission.

As of March of this year, I don't work full time any more, but when I did, the company had a policy that you could use the computers to do whatever you wanted, within the law, and as long as it was not pornographic, on breaks and lunches. That's when we did our shopping and surfing. I was senior management, reporting directly to the owner, and I can tell you that everyone there obeyed these rules. So, that's not stealing...

skyjockey, you cannot use that term 'ALL', you can generalize if you wish, because more than you think are honest hard working people.
If a person is taught from an early age what is right and wrong, and they are responsible, they will not do it.
I have never taken or used anything without full permission from my boss or employer. Most of them were happy to allow me to have a pen paper or other stuff so I could do work stuff at home, like for reports.. as long as it was for the company.
I would never think of taking anything that did not belong to me, and that I could show a sales slip for.

If people were to be really honest, i'll
bet the figure is 75-90% of people at their jobs take home, office supplies.
Those BIC PENS, THOSE NUMBER 2 PENCILS,
oh wait i'm sure you all keep those in your shirt pockets, ,how about the paper clips,
it's not always the office chair,or the copier or computer, it's the little things that add up

Look at it this way: how many of us take our work home at night, or bring in our own office supplies, often to be shared? Don’t most companies have accounts with office suppliers that get them significant discounts? When it’s not company secrets or thousands in technology, but pens and copies and local phone calls, I think it can actually be a good thing, establishing a sense of family throughout the company.

Taking "stuff" from your office is wrong. But would you call it stealing? What if you used it for a day then brought it back? Would you call it 'borrowing'? Maybe stealing is the wrong word for it, but its definately not right.

I think it depends on what supply the person takes. If it's something as simple as a pen or a stapler, I don't see what's wrong with that. Now if it was something big like a copier, or a printer, then there would be a problem.

I guess it's probably OK to steal a TV or two from Wal-Mart. They make so much money, they're not going to notice one or two TVs.
