Do you think it's a health hazard to feed animals in your own backyard?

With all due respect to the urbanites of our world, my back yard was an animal feeding ground before it was my back yard.

now they don't want you to feed animals in your own yard.
What is allowed in your own yard?
If i own my own house pay my own taxes,
what i do in my own yard is my business, and not the business of my neighbors.
As long as i am not doing any illegal activities, and feeding animals is not illegal,it's humaine

Wait....what animals are we talking about? Cats, dogs, birds....or dangerous ones like raccoons or rodents that carry diseases?? I can't help but think of that lady that was on the news a couple of months ago that was feeding rats. Next thing you know, they are running around the whole neighborhood like they own it. Or a lady I saw on Animal Planet that was feeding raccoons. The situation got so bad for her that she had to call animal control to help her because the raccoons were starting to act hostile. Certain animals shouldn't be encouraged because it can be dangerous, but other than that, I agree with the rest....my backyard is my business (when I get one someday, LOL)!!!!

My crazy neighbor feeds the squirrels too. And they have destroyed my yard. It is fine if they stayed just in her yard but they do not know where her land ends and mine begins. I have been working in my garden just to find peanut shells all thru it.
I have to keep my dog on a leash. She should have to keep her pets on a leash also.
I am going to contact my local board of health . Thanks for the idea.

I wish this didn't have to be a law. The decision to feed local animals and wildlife should be left up to common sense. However, there are too many people out there that fill their houses with wildlife and live in conditions that often spread disease, ruining what should be a basic right for all of us. Maybe someday we'll work towards a system that can better differentiate between those who help and hurt these animals.

With the natural habitats of wild animals in Massachusetts disappearing at an alarming rate, I support the right of this woman to do what she feels in her heart is right, particularly on her own property.

I agree with the SPCA wild animals find their own food. It's nice to care for the animals, but nature uses food supply to control animal population.Once you interfere in that system you could do more damage than good. Ethanthom

Illegal? The whole situation is ridiculous. Are bird feeders illegal? Are authorities going to head to the nearest hardware store and arrest the owner for “aiding and abetting” such a crime? Are the kind hearted people who leave a food dish out for feral cats going to be hauled away? Feeding the birds is a pastime, if squirrels get into the feed as well than so be it. As a species we have taken away so much land from the indigenous wildlife that their diet almost has to be supplemented. Is a squirrel really going to dig for food in the latest strip-mall parking lot? This woman is not leaving out a side of meat to feed the coyotes directly. Animals have to eat and they were here first.

Its not really a bird feeder when she drops 15 pounds of birdseed out her second story window onto the sidewalk and has every pigeon in Massachusetts leaving droppings on my car and roof. The peanut shells and holes from squirrels is just another anscillary benefit to living next to this woman. And her adorable 3 cats? Filthy and sitting in my backyard every night when I get home. But who cares what she does on her own property right? It doesn't affect anyone else!
