Elton John recently said that the Internet is destroying music. He wants the Internet shut down for five years to see how the production of music is affected during that span.

Should we shut down the Internet for five years?

Come on Sir Elton give me a break.
He must have nothing else to complain about.
I am sure most artists today make the majority of there money from live concerts that can't be replaced by the internet.
Sir Elton (as you are called) Don't you have some global warming or Aids fundraisers to do concentrate on the more important issues.

OMG !!! This has to be the dumbest thing I ever heard !!!!!!!!!!!! For one, I think music has grown more because of the Internet. It's a cheap way for new bands to be heard for one thing. Why would we want to shut the entire net down even if it did make music more popular? Kind of selfish don't you think ?

How can I post on this fine blog with no internet?

Elton John is lucky he is not starting out as a musician today. He was around when 45 singles and 33 lp's (that’s vinyl records to you young uns) - then we bought his music on 8 track tape - then we bought it on cassette tape - then we bought it on CD.

He is a great musician but give me a break. How much remixed and repackaged music do we have to buy before we own it?

Give him a break...he was obviously hanging out with Lindsey Lohan when he said this...we've all had one of those nights where you black out and say meaningless things...maybe we should all start churning butter again too...that was a good one Elton Einstein....

Hmmm.....maybe he's worried that some incriminating photos of him may pop up.

Shut down the Internet? For five years? To promote better music? Not only is this a finalist for the worst idea ever, it’s not even being suggested as a means to curb child predators or identity fraud! The Internet, like it or not, has become the backbone of our society, and it’s not going anywhere. Why not embrace and work with new technologies to bring that classic sound and feeling Sir Elton’s missing into the digital age?

Sir Elton has a valid point here, but he’s aiming at the wrong target. Many new technologies, including computers and the Internet, have provided millions of people with tools that allow them to share and create music in countless new ways. I miss vinyl too, but “shutting down” the Internet isn’t going to bring it back.

Not only is “shutting down” the Internet a terrible idea, it’s not the music industry’s biggest problem. The real trouble, Sir Elton, is that I had to shell out a hundred dollars for the opportunity to see you in concert, and at up to twenty bucks an album, I can’t afford to purchase your discography. Historically, music has led revolutions and broken down countless barriers…it’s time for the stars of our time to embrace the digital age!

You guys must not listen to music today. There is not one rock band I can't listen to without thinking "am I listening to the same band or is everyone seriously just getting lazy?"

Sir Elton John is right about one thing; music is becoming absolute garbage to listen to. However I don't think blaming, and shutting down the internet is necessary.

Elton John has been noticeably weird since about the time that his second album was released. And I can remember back then, too!

The 'net isn't ruining music for me because any music I listen to was made when Rock was Rock and before the 'net was a glitter in Algore's eye. lol

Many of today's celebrities are nothing but selfish hypocrites! Just as they want us to use less energy in our lives while they travel in private jets and with some of them having 5 vans of equipment, if the Internet was to be shut down, how much do you wanna bet that they would still have a 'net for themselves?

Just got back from London, from a theater workshop in the West End, where we saw Billy Eliott, the musical, (coming to broadway in a yr) and Elton John wrote the music. Now it was a fantastic musical, but Elton John isn't the greatest Showtunes song writer, I mentioned that there was ONE song I loved, but didn't buy the soundtrack, as all the rest of the songs were peppered with 4 letter words, or just classical tunes. Maybe it's not so much the internet, but Elton's songs and content that are not up to par, as I used to love his music.

Elton John does not know anything of technology, especally he is making a killing on Itunes and Raphosdy music services for selling his songs. If he thinks the internet is killing the music industry he is wrong. First of all the record companies have killed themselves by putting really bad music it started in the 1990's and has contiuned to today. Todays music has people who think they can sing and hip hop is not going to be played on oldies stations in 25 years. If elton wants to also know whats wrong lets start that MTV and VH1 does not play music videos anymore they put on really poor shows of people who's 15 mins have been up for years or over played movies that no one cares about. To a MTV awards show that has nothing to do about music anymore because they don't show videos. Other things are FM radio is moving from music to talk. Elton should be glad he has already made his money, heck I remember him hocking a sat radio in a TV comerical a few years ago. His own music has suffered becuse he rather do movie music and love songs and forgot all about Rock music. But people today laugh when Elton goes on a rant because he has not put anything out that anyone wants to listen too. I guess all the money he has is not enough.

i think that there is no way that anyone would be able to shut down the internet period, the internet is the biggest scorce of information.

p.s would elton john want us to take away his piano???

I want some of what Elton has been taking. Obviously it promotes a sense of self importance. Just the suggestion of stopping billions of dollars in e-commerce for the sake of an ill advised test of the music industry is deeply disturbing. Maybe a little music that is worth listening to would be just the fix for Elton.

The internet is the least of the music industry's problem. In my humble opinion, the "industry" itself is what is wrong with the "industry." Many in the industry today have become so self-important and greedy it is turning us common folk away. Maybe they should consider lowering the price of concert tickets and/or their CDs, as well as the t-shirts, posters, etc. This way, more people will be able to afford to go see them and buy their product...thus, in the long run, generating more money for them. It might take a little longer...BUT, that IMHO, is a better solution than gettin rid of the internet.

Mr. John, whatta thinking?
