Lawmakers on Beacon Hill are pushing to ban Salvia, a Mexican herb that law enforcement officials claim has become a popular street drug. Its effects have been well documented on YouTube.

Some states in the U.S. have banned Salvia, not to mention a few cities and towns in Massachusetts, as well. What do you think? Should Salvia be banned in the Bay State? Watch my story tonight on the FOX25 News at 10 to hear what lawmakers have to say.

Absolutely not. I don't want the government into my personal choice even as much as they are now. To outlaw yet another thing before outlawing the two worst legal drugs, Cigarettes and alcohol, is insanity.
Our forefathers would be ashamed of us. If they saw how many of our constitutional and personal rights we have given up for a false sense of comfort from an ever intrusive government, they would roll over in their graves.

On to the drug itself. Kids may be trying it, but they are nNOT getting hooked or continuing to use it. If you ever try it yourself, you won't try it again soon. It is an extremely powerful but very brief hallucinogenic. Kids are trying it because shows like FOX are glamorizing it. Use it once, you are VERY unlikely to use is again soon, if ever.
I have used it several times before as an experiment. I am realistic. I shouldn't spout off about something I know nothing about. This is NOT a recreational drug as it's being portrayed on YouTube.
It is a mind altering substance, yes. But it alters your mind to such an extreme degree and lasts so very short a time that it is not appealing to use repeatedly. There is no recreation to this drug. It has no long term side effect and is not addictive. Now ,again, alcohol and Cigarettes, on the other hand are very addictive and still legal.
The effects last 5-25 minutes depending on potency. It is NOT habit forming because of the effect it gives. You. Be much more concerned about your child getting cigarettes or alcohol than this herb.

I haven't heard a good argument for why it should be banned yet. According to the news report, there isn't even much information on the drug's long-term effects.

Is the new strategy to ban first and then figure it all out later?

absolute, that isn't a new strategy, actually...It's been in use for years. Check wikipedia for "drug schedules" and you'll see what I mean.

When it comes to banning salvia, however, I say no. We are a society that doesn't seem to understand that human nature makes the forbidden fruit taste the sweetest. Just look at our war on drugs, as opposed to other countries' handling of the same issue. We should be studying the long-term effects before we do anything else, otherwise this could really pose a problem later.

We should first ban parents who do not effectively guide and supervise their children.....

There you go, Chip!!!! If this is considered a "drug", then, isn't a drug a drug--no matter its addictive properties or lack thereof? Even that "short" period of its effects, would render a person incapable of thinking rationally and making intelligent decisions! All it takes is a few short seconds and one wrong decision. Anyone remember LSD????? Maybe you younger people don't, but, I grew up during the 60's and 70's--I never took it, however, I saw its effects--NOT PRETTY!!!!! That, too, was a hallucinogenic drug, with some very serious, and sometimes fatal endings due to the lack of any ability to make rational decisions!!!!! Come on, people--a drug is a drug is a drug!! If not taken properly, ANY drug can produce very dangerous effects!!! Common sense, people!!!

I have seen some misreporting in my lifetime, but this report really takes the cake. What on earth posessed Fox to lump urban legends about absinthe in with salvia?

Who is this "Grace Lee" that you found and what exactly are her credentials to make board untrue statements about something she obviously knows nothing about? If you did even a lick of research, you'd have quickly learned that historical and modern day absinthe never contained enough quantities of thujone to be hallucinogenic. Also, Grace is wrong that american absinthe does not contain thujone, it absolutley does. Specifically Lucid and Kubler brands.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK FOX NEWS!!! Absinthe is not a dangerous drug, no more dangerous that a high proof vodka or rum.

Just out of curiosity, absintheur, what makes you an authority on this subject?

i have tried salvia it's effects are greatly exagerated, inhaling nitrous from a whip cream bottle does way more, so maybe we should ban that instead it's ridiculous people are always going to find ways to alter there minds, so why not put more effort into stopping illegal drugs instead. We don't need anymore politicians trying to make names for themselves by babysitting us and getting to involved in our private lives.
