Adam, When I quit smoking coming on 3 years in Sept, I vowed I would stash the money I would have spent on cigarettes. I was smoking 2 packs a day @ $5.00 a pack. That was very short lived when I didn't want to part with $10. a day. Instead I would put all my change into a ice bucket. Instead of having almost 10 thousand dollars, I have a couple of hundred. Even that I'm not faithful to. I dig quarters out for laundry and Foxwoods. I guarantee, I do more laundry then I go to Foxwoods.

Adam,

REALLY looking forward to hearing about this. I'm always looking for more ideas on how to save money. Right now, we have a budget sheet in my house and come hell or high water, that budget sheet is respected! This is how we've been able to save the money we will use for the purchase of the house we are looking for. However, like I said, always looking for ideas on how to save more. :)

I was spending at least $120.00 a month at Starbucks. So I decided to boycott caffiene all together. I notice the extra cash and I feel great!

Its hard these days to save money with all the cost of living going up.

I have to say I live in a nice town and own my house and pay my taxes, But after I pay the mortgage, electric, cable, phone I'm luckey if I have any extra money to by gas these days.

I do try to pay as much off with my tax returns as I can like my car insurance, home owners insurance. ect. bills that I can pay the lump sum off every year.

How can anyone save any money these days with our bills going as high as they are. I'm trying to save now for falls oil bills. Its hard to get ahead these days. I'm going to say it and I know people are not going to like it but.... we need a WOMAN in the white house to penny pintch!

Ooh, SirB, I did the same. I was spending about $100 a month on coffee. We formed a little coffee club at work. We order the coffee and it lasts about 6 weeks and all we pay is about $10/each for the entire 6 week supply!!!!! Great money saving idea!

My wife and I both got 2nd jobs....both pretty tired not sure how long it's going to last.

I traded in my gas hog truck for a small 4cyl Avenger...I can still look cool. I save $50/wk in gass and $80/mo in reduced car payment....several hundreds more $$$ not stopping in Home Depot because I THINK that I need something.

Try saving money with three in college! Since we are married, own a home and have jobs, we are not entitled to any federal funding. Fine. But the colleges are finding more ways to tack on cost. You have your technology, student activity, administation fees not to mention the NSS fee (that's non-state subsidize) for any class you might wish to take online. The teacher doesn't even leave his/her office, yet it cost more. Beautiful. I know.. I'm lucky my kids went to state schools, plus one graduates this year. But the cost will go up for the other two so can only hope to spend about the same.

The only way to really save money today is to give up things we have become used to having.

You need to:

1. Stop buying anything that isn't a real necessity. We don't need fourteen pair of jeans, or name-brand shoes or shampoos, or lunches at restaurants, or yoga lessons, or mag subscriptions, etc.

2. Instead of going to Disneyland for a vacation, consider house-swapping in a place you'd like to explore.

3. Try bartering for goods or services with neighbors or friends instead of paying cash; you do for them and they do for you.

4. Use old, bleached washcloths for cleaning, washing, polishing instead of paper products.

5. Use glasses and dishes instead of paper cups and plates.

6. Cut down on use of electricity by shutting off lights in rooms you aren't in, turning off lamposts outside after ten and turning off TV's that aren't really being watched. And don't use a dishwasher unless its fully loaded.
Use standard toothbrushes. Energy-saving lightbulbs. Turn down thermostats at night.

7. Hold yardsales instead of throwing things out. Or sell something you can make at a craft fair...as long as it cost less to make than it will sell for. Put your good used clothing in a consignment shop to get money rather than putting them all in a charity bin.

8. Shopping online often is cheaper than spending hours and gas going to many different stores looking for a product. Many websites have free shipping, too. Also consider buying on places like eBay.

9. Take advantage of free samples from companies and use coupons if they can actually save you money. (Som

Hi fenway! I will admit I've been absent as of late...but that's probably a good thing! (I'm so chatty! haha!)

And, TooMuchHype...

Actually I had 11 suggestions, but I ran out of granted space! Ran out of memory, too, cause now I can't remember what they were! LOL

Oh, but, I was going to say about coupons....always check regular prices on similar items before using coupons because often time they will be less cost than the item with a coupon!

Oh...here's a good suggestion! If you go to the grocery store DO NOT go down aisles that don't have items on your shopping list...sure as heck you'll pick something extra up if you do! And, by all means NEVER go shopping when you are hungry...you'll always buy more stuff; eat something before you go.

Also, if you go shopping with a partner, you'll buy almost twice as much, so only have ONE person do the food shopping if you can help it...you'll save big at the checkout. Okay, I'm done!...maybe! haha!

These tips are all pretty obvious.

"send your kid to state college" is a very bizarre tip though. First of all, if your kid gets into a top tier school, the rewards of that investment are going to go far beyond any extra tuition costs. Secondly, expensive colleges can afford to give more aid. That's a fact. You could get a way better package at a private school. Thinking that state schools are *necessarily* cheaper is very outdated.

Hey buggie,
I wasn't saying sending your kids to college is a way to save money. I was saying that having 3 in at one time is tough. All colleges are expensive and for us with our income and the fact that my kids weren't scholars we are footing the bills on our own. You don't think we looked into and applied to the private colleges? The way I was saving money was getting them graduated. This was just my comment.. soo sorry if you found it bizzare.

we've cut back beyond the bone. we clip coupons, save change & nickel back cans.
we've even gone so far as to take one car off the road completely, take the t almost everywhere, sreamlined the errands using a car, and fill up the car only once a month. we still have difficulty making those ends. sad part is, we don't have kids..

I save ALOT of cash because I no longer have to commute to work. I walk. I work on the same street I live on. I group my errands so I am not driving everyday. I plan our meals better to save on groceries, but will not resort to "store brand" garbage. I make my own bread (huge savings), I have chickens, so I do not have to buy eggs, I also have a 1/2 acre vege garden that we live on over the winter because I can everything or freeze it. I started doing this many, many years ago as I grew up on a farm with my Grandparents doing this the same way with the produce. I do not have a cell phone (never will either), switched our phone to Skype and all of our calls are through that for $3.00 a YEAR! There are a LOT of ways to cut corners, but most are unwilling to give up their luxury items.
