If Whitey Bulger is sitting on a tropical island somewhere, that might  explain why he's feeling warm right now.

Or it could be the 79 candles on his birthday cake.

Or it might be what the Bulger Fugitive Task Force is doing: turning up the heat.

At a news conference at the Boston FBI HQ, members of the BFTF announced the reward for finding Whitey is doubled. From one to two million dollars for information leading to Whitey's arrest.

Two million dollars for a dropped dime. That's quite a return on an investment.

But there's more.

This reward is open to anyone. And this includes the entire Bulger family. I think it's unlikely anyone from this tight knit family will actually turn in James Whitey Bulger. And so do the feds.

That's why this announcement at the news conference raised eyebrows.

One person eligible to collect a two million dollar payday: Catherine Greig.

Catherine Greig has been travelling with Bulger almost from the day he disappeared.

The feds say that Whitey is so elusive that he planned this escape for years, stashing money in safe deposit boxes, plotting aliases. What about Catherine Greig? Did she know what she was getting into when she hopped into Whitey's car (after he dropped off Theresa Stanley) and drove off into the unknown. On that day, Catherine Greig gave up everything: her family, her dogs, everything. Just to ride shotgun for Whitey forever.

Catherine Greig is wanted for harboring Whitey all these years. But what if she wants to come in? What if she's had enough? Turns out
Catherine can collect two million dollars if she gives up Whitey.

Here's what US Attorney Michael Sullivan said today: " If she hears about this, reads about it, decides at this point in her life she want to come home and be with family and friends and wants to turn James Whitey Bulger in, I think we would welcome the opportunity to sit down and negotiate a reward with Catherine Greig."

Wow.

Of course, Whitey could decide that Catherine is a greater liability than an asset and just finisher her off. But wouldn't that be proof of Whitey's location?

Stay tuned.

And here's one more thing the feds did today to turn up the heat on Whitey. They released new information about Whitey's criminal past.
We already know about the 19 murders, the extortion, the RICO statute etc, etc. Now add child abuse and molestation.

The feds announced that they've interviewed women who have told them that when they were girls, Whitey sexually assaulted them. One of them was 12 years old at the time.

Whitey Bulger is 79 years old. He's been missing since 1995. The last known sighting is 2002 in London. The Bulger Fugitive Task Force is convinced Whitey is alive. And so is Catherine.

But the reality is that they are no closer to finding Whitey today than they were in 1996. They are hoping the new two million dollar reward (the largest offered for a domestic fugitive), plus the appeal to Catherine Greig, and the new information about his criminal past, will compel someone to finally give it up.

What do you think?

Will we ever find out what happened to James Whitey Bulger?

How can you report on Whitey when you are not reporting on Obama's African half-brother?

LIBERAL MEDIA!

....Bob Ward...Have you ever been to Nova Scotia? If you haven't save yourself a 5hr boat ride, actually 2 five hour boat rides.
My point here is regarding Whitey Bulger. Nova Scotia is quite Irish. The weather is similar to right here. It's only a short flight and a medium day trip to Maine and then by boat ( THE CAT )....AND...Nobody in their right mind would ever go there twice. I think it would be a perfect place for Bulger to live. Almost like home, home is only a short trip. Easy for him to meet with people he knows. Nobody would look for him there. I was in that hell hole for 3 long boreing days and I never saw 1 cop.
My point here is Nova Scotia is probably the only place on earth no search was done....

You think I'm nuts huh...What do you think? Are you laughing? Yea...I must be over tired talking like this...never mind....OH did I tell you how you do a great job at Fox25 and I enjoy watching and listening to you...

Have a good day.....

SoxFan1977, What does Obama's half brother have to do with the price of tea in China? Should Bob exclusively write about Obama? Believe it or not, other stories exist.

Hi Bob, Have you ever watched the Sopranos? Did you see what happened to Adrienne when she was wiring Christopher. Catherine Greig wouldn't be so dumb to pull something like this on Whitey. You think?

Maybe a $2 million bounty would be enough to compel Catherine to drop that dime?

This guy have been dead for years. In his line of business, it is tough to know one's friends. One of the relatives which Bulger killed, got revenge years ago.

Take the 2 mil and fix The Longfellow Brodge.

Fenway: I never would have bumped off Adrienne.
She looked too go in tennis gear.
I don't think there is much left of Bulger's crew. Bulger was a rat and all the hard core gangsters know this. Bulger's close buddies have all become rats. I am not close to being in that line of work, but I cannot stand a rat.

Southie is a much better place with his absence.

Guti,

If you thought of Nova Scotia don't you think other people have thought of it too?

Does anyone in their right mind think the Feds really want Whitey? Why do they want him, so they can be embarrassed even more than they have been already? 2 mil or 10 mil what's the difference? Looks like this guy was smart enough to beat the system, or did the Feds help him escape because of all the trouble he could cause them?

Nobody even knows if Catherine is still alive do we, or even if Whitey's still alive for that matter. In any case, the Feds do this little dog and pony show every 6 to 8 months to let everyone think their still working on the case. How much time do you think the Feds put into actually looking for Whitey? I would think not much, especially with all the terrorists running around. I would think they have bigger fish to fry then worrying about a rat like Whitey don’t you?

Jovanone--I have been saying that for a very long time! If the feds wanted him that badly, I guarantee they would find him. They know where he is--He's not THAT good!

I would say that over 50 percent of the Fed's are retired who were around in those days.

These kids on the job today want to make this happen and don't care about a bunch of retired guys. I don't think he is alive, but these young agents will make sure.

Hey Everyone,

Very interesting comments. And the feds know the doubts are out there, and won't go away until..or unless Whitey is found/recovered.

One persistent rumour we hear is that Whitey is in the federal witness protection program. I asked about it yesterday...and the feds deny it.

I think Whitey is very much alive with Catherine.

If I had to pick, I'd say he's in Ireland.
The gun running with the Valhalla reveals Whitey had ties to the IRA.

Maybe a former member(s) of the organization is helping him hide now?

That's my guess. And it's just a guess.

It's amazing to me that Clark Rockefeller, with his money and no id...was found in two weeks. Michael Bresnahan, working on cash and living in the woods for a year...recently found.

But Whitey and Catherine are completely off the grid.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Bob, It still makes me wonder...Do they really not know where he is? Do they REALLY want to find him? If they DON'T, why not? Have they been threatened ?

Bob,
they'll only find whitey, when he is finally in the ground, someone will probably send a picture of the stone and it will say,
"They Never Got Me"
Now just say it was you traveling with Whitey Bob, and you heard about the new money deal,
would you turn him in?

Hi Bob,
I'd actually like to have a discussion with you, even via email, regarding a story that appeared on the 10pm news last night and is also featured on your website. Could you email me at nancydrew85@aol.com? Thank you.

legendkiller:

Here's the thing. When Catherine Grieg took off for Whitey..did she leave knowing she'd never come home? Or did she think it might be a year at most?

That's the key question. Thirteen years is a LONG time to be out. And if the two are not settled somewhere, and just driving around, I'd imagine that got old a long, long time ago.

I think if those questions are answered, we have a clear idea if Catherine could ever drop a dime and start negotiating a two million dollar surrender.

kaylisnana,

One of the first things they said at the news conference this week was how much they want to get him.

Everyone on the Bulger Fugitive Task Force knows those doubts are not going to disappear until (at least) Whitey is located.

Now it's a two million dollar reward. That's not insignificant. But we still don't know where Whitey is.

Elite One,

They used to say all of Bulger's cohorts were either dead or in jail.

Now it's they are either dead, or back out on the streets.

The only one still inside is Flemmi. And of course, Zip.

That's how long Bulger's been gone.
