If you were watching the Red Sox and the Yankees on FOX 25 on saturday night, you know what happened.  If you weren't, here's what happened.  Two outs , bottom of the 9th, sox leading 4-3, Jonathan Papelbon on the mound facing Robinson Cano.  With two strikes on Cano, the game on our air was switched to the Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR race from Phoenix that had just started and you weren't able to see the final out of the Sox game.   Papelbon got Cano to ground out to end the game.

15 minutes or so before this incident, the FOX broadcast announced that this would happen and that you might have to switch over to FX ( a sister FOX station) for the end of the game.   This, of course, doesn't make this any easier to swallow, especially considering that the game was on the line.

All I can tell you at this writing is that this was a FOX Network decision.  We, locally at Fox 25 have no control over a decision like this.  That doesn't mean I don't want to know what happened.  I was watching the game and I was just as upset as you.   I plan trying to find out what happened and why and I promise you I will have a follow up to this blog.  In the meantime, feel free to respond here and have your say.   I know you will be opinionated and passionate but please keep it clean.

It's early yet Butch, if it was the playoffs I don't they would have cut away.
Two outs, two strikes, team from NY,Billy Buck cleansed, RedSox jersey buried in their new stadium? Forgetaboutit, Fox may have been trying to help.

I did NOT hear the announcement. Maybe I was concentrating to much on the game. Go figure. There should have been a scrolling of some sort on the bottom of the screen. That would've gotten people's attention. After waitng two hours and coming back to an intense pitching performance only to have the rug pulled out from under you was extremely infuriating. By the time I finally found FX on my cable lineup the game was OVAH! And what about the folks who don't have cable? Free games are few and far between as it is. No fair.

I think probably the Nascar race was said and done, paid for however you want to put it. There may have been more of an uproar if the beginning of the race was not shown. That was probably bad planning in the first place to put the race on after a Sox/Yanks game. Did someone get greedy?

What did you expect them to do? The kept filling rain delay time with NASCAR updates so it was obvious there'd be a conflict because of the long rain delay.

Jake, the scheduling was fine until it started to rain. That's why there was a problem at all.

I bet this exact scenario is covered in the FOX contracts with NASCAR and MLB. The sports and networks are probably all lawyered up enough to cover this scenario in great detail.

By the end of the game, I had already had enough of Buck/McCarver kissing the respective butts of the Yankees anyways.. I had no doubt the Sox would pull out the win, and was able to switch it over to FX to see the end of the game, with the mute button on of course.. :)

Butch,

It wasn't bad that FOX switched to the race, but they show the first lap and go to five minutes of commercials after they switched. The race itself was boring because they (FOX) let you watch five minutes of racing and then five minutes of commercials. This went on for the whole race. I know that someone has to pay for these commercials, but give me break, let us see the race.

Not to beat a dead horse, but baseball is boring.

Isn't this why we have a special channel called NESN so everyone isn't forced to watch all 200 games!! Ya I can see why you would be pissed if the end was so close and they pre-empt it for something else. As a NASCAR fan I was made that they kept going back to the stupid game.

It wasn't that long ago it went the other way and Fox cut off the end of a race to show a stupid ballgame. Some guy got in trouble for slamming the Fox website and shutting it down with complaints or something.

Don't forget NASCAR is one of the most watched sports in the world ! so $$$ talks

Got an opinion? I'd love to hear it....I've got a few myself and there's a pretty good chance you don't agree with some of them, so let's hear from you.
