Instant Replay is both good and bad for baseball.   Why shouldn't umpires use all the technology at their disposal to get the call right when it comes to fair or foul or in or out on home run calls?  But here is the problem, we all know this is only the beginning.  Once a couple of games are decided by home run calls that are overturned or held up because the replay got it right, then the cries will really begin.

Can't you just see it.  There will be a bang bang safe/out call at first base or homeplate in a playoff game in the 5th inning of a one run game.  A team will lose the game by one run and the crying will begin.  Use instant replay for more than just home run calls!  Why not get all the big calls right.   I'll tell you why.  Because the right call is the one made at that exact moment by the umpire in his judgement.  Is he always right?  Of course not, but how many times are you amazed that he is when you see the replay?

And furthermore, what are you going to do on close calls?  If it is a bang bang play and different replays prove inconclusive will you still overturn the call?  Or do you use what the NFL does.  Need to have "induspitable visual evidence" to overturn a call.  And then what? Do you allow managers to call for a replay?  And do you penalize them if the call is upheld?  Take away and out? a run for his team?  STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just home run calls.  This is what instant replay should be used for.  But you watch, a couple close calls and people will be calling for more.  I think that's wrong

I agree with you Butch. A HR carries far more clout in a game and to the batter. It is also very difficult in some parks to see that ball as it carries past a foul pole, or, hits the top of a wall, or, is touched by a fan.
What really erks me however, is the number of times that a base runner will slide too far out of the travel lane to 2nd base to breakup a DP. I would change that rule that you must slide for the bag and be no further than an arms reach for the bag.
Also, on those same plays, close enough is close enough to call out? Give me a break! How many times have we seen the SS or 2nd baseman step off the bag without having the ball yet and then make the throw to 1st. This is BS IMHO!! Call the damn play right.

Butch: If these umpires were better, we would have have this problem.

I think we should send some back to umpire school. Starting with the ones who umpire little league.

I think if they blow a call, it should come out of their paycheck.

Butch, in all due respect baseball move so slowly they could do an instant reply between pitches to call balls and strikes. They could review the whole game during a pitching change.

Use the replay and get it right for a change.

The umpires are only human. It's different in the NFL becuase they pretty much cleared the fog and ironed all the wrinkles out on this issue. Plus in baseball you can't take away a timeout if the call on the field stands. I think Butch makes a great point, but I think it will be a classic case of "if you give 'em your hand, they'll take your arm" and it wont end at runs, every close strike for an out will want to be reviewed after a while.
Things are fine the way they are, it's not EVERY game where we see a bad call that changes the whole outcome of the game.

Butch: I listened to you today. You let those guys push you around too much. Does Ordway prepare for the show anymore?

I wonder if they will start to go overboard, and then say forget the whole thing. I do think it will complicate things a little too much, even if it's just for home runs. Baseball and Football are so different, I love them both, but I don't want baseball to become too much like football. Baseball is my favorite. My Mom got me into it at a young age. Even in '95, when she said, "that's it! I'm never watching baseball again!" (player strike) I didn't believe it for a minute. I was right. I say, leave it the way it is. Go Red Sox! Yankees stink!

Got an opinion? I'd love to hear it....I've got a few myself and there's a pretty good chance you don't agree with some of them, so let's hear from you.
