What is going on in society?  Who are these people that want to control every aspect of our lives?!

Last night I was invited by my grandson to go to his school to see him in a play that was being put on by the Middle School children.  I thought, that would be fun and said I'd be there.

I can't tell you how many school plays I've gone to over the years, including when I was a student growing up.  They're always fun and always the same routine.

The parents start arriving and kids are all excited.  Parents greet each other, wave to each other, and talk about their children.  There's usually an introduction by whomever is the director of the show, lots of clapping, the lights go down and the show begins.  Now usually, there is an intermission to use the restroom or get a snack that is being served out in the hall, and afterwards we all take our seats and enjoy the second half of the program. A good time is had by all, and everyone goes home.  It never changes.

Well, last night it changed.  While sitting in my seat and watching the usual hustle and bustle of familes looking for seats and children running around full of importance, I felt I knew exactly how the evening would go.  I was wrong about that.  When things finally settled down and the director stood before the crowd to give a talk on what would be presented, I kind of wondered why they didn't have programs this year.  I justified it in my own mind by acknowledging that it didn't cost anything to see the play and that was why.  Anyway, we were told they would be doing four skits, two during the first half and two after intermission.  That's when everything changed; we were told there would be no refreshments.

NO REFRESHMENTS!  What??  Why not?  They've always had refreshments during a plays intermission.  Its how they make money for trips and projects or whatever.  Was I hearing right?  (I think I heard a gasp from the audience.) We were told there was a water fountain out in the hall if we wanted a drink of water.

So, what was the reason for this?  What were we suppose to do for 15 mins?  The reason was...and get this!....because "We are told we can't serve food because some people have allergies and so on.". He then quickly went on to something else.

Do you know I had all I could do to remain in my seat and not say a word.  I wanted to stand up and yell at him, "WHAT? ARE YOU PEOPLE CRAZY?!"  (I think I could have started a riot right then and there.)  They can't serve food because some people have allergies???  Give me a break!  How in the heck did we get this far when we've been taking refreshment at plays for all these years?!  Why aren't we all dead?!  That was just about the lamest excuse I've ever heard of.

Its getting out of hand with these people that are afraid we can't handle our own lives!  Don't they give us any credit to know not to let our children have something that may have an ingredient that will cause them to have a reaction?  Don't we have mouths to ask if we are unsure?  Will the 'nth' percentage of the population to food allergies take priority? They can't fool me...its those darn junk food idiots getting into our lives again! (Maybe they're all fat people. "If I have to go on a diet then the rest of the world is comin' with me!")

Where is this absurdity going to end up?  Maybe with, "Put down the peanut butter and come out with your hands up!"?

We've gone nuts!...and I don't mean peanuts!

While I'm sensitive to the needs of those who have allergies, I totally understand your frustration and disgust.
The kids with allergies are in the minority, and I don't understand why the rest of us need to live our lives AROUND their problems.
Here's an idea; if you're so concerned about your kid's allergies, BRING SAFE FOOD!
There's moms of kids whom are allergic to peanuts at my son's school who are just OBNOXIOUS. They're so obsessed! They use their kids allergy as some kind of platform to say to everybody; "See what a concerned parent I am!"
We're not going to shove peanuts down your kid's throat, and we know to keep peanuts away from them! Now shuuuudapp already!
Pretty sad that all that money had to be lost "just in case" a few kids might have bumped into some freakin' peanut dust. How 'bout we exercise a little reason and common sense?

C- Fox, it's just another case of people going overboard...and wanting the world to cater to their needs. I believe on the part of parents it also comes from a lack of knowledge. I have a severe allergy to tree nuts. It's something my family, close friends and some co-workers know about...but that's it. Why..?? Because it's my problem...not anyone else's and I am the one responsible to manage it. I have never requested that friends, family or coworkers maintain a nut free environment. I think part of the hysteria comes from the fact that doctors tell parents to be extra careful and not to expose their children to nut products for their own protection . Also, a severe allergic reaction ( anaphylactic shock) is a terribly frightening experience. However, people with food allergies need to always be prepared ( I carry an epi pen and benadryl with me ALWAYS)...and not expect everyone else to cater to their issue.

Thanks for your input, miscricket. Nice to know there are sensible people still left! :) I would like to make it clear that I am most willing to accommodate someone if they have a problem with a food or anything else. And, really, I think just about anyone would be. Its simply courtesy. But to have government or special interest groups tell me I HAVE to do something, is when I get mad.

Also, I empathize with anyone who has a food allergy, including you miscricket, I know it can be a life-threatening condition.

Take care and well wishes!

C_Fox, I think I know why there were no programs at this thing. Us left-handed people got all offended that they're always only printed for right handers, and made a huge fuss. (I actually wouldn't make a fuss about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if people did.) And I agree with you and Mis. There's no need to freak out if someone's allergic to some kind of food. I've noticed that in cases where someone happens to be diabetic, the people setting up the refreshments have a section of stuff that's sugar-free. And since the most common food allergy is peanuts, it's not that hard to sort out peanut-free things. But, common sense went MIA several years ago, and rumor has it he's dead.

Great Post C_Fox! I agree with you 100% on this. Whatever school that is, they are ridiculous and I would seriously question the leadership their. I would have been tempted to run out and buy some snacks and sell them during intermission myself! On another note, thanks so much for your response on one of my older blog posts, the one about the cold war. The way you described Germany is the same way it felt to me when I was there. I still can't believe that I ended up spending 6 1/2 years there! But, the memories I have from that time, both good and bad are priceless! You were in Gmeund! Wow, you probably know that there was a Pershing unit there too. I was there many times to exchange equipment and such as it wasn't that far from Heilbronn or Neckarsulm. Thanks so much for the response!
