I know I'm going to get flak from this post, but it's mine and I'm going to say what I think.

What is it with people that feel the need to put up signs in public to express their personal opinions?

Ride down the highways and by-ways and guaranteed you'll see some kind of 'memorial' to some kind of issue; they'll be crosses and flowers planted into the ground at the location where someone was killed in an accident.  There'll be yellow ribbons hanging from trees.  There'll be graffiti sprayed on buildings and bridge overpasses.  There'll be political signs stuck in someone's yard.  They'll be balloons attached to trees along with direction arrows leading the way for a quarter mile.  When you come off an exit ramp, they'll be organizations and club symbols lined up so that you can't miss them.  There will also be yellow ribbon stickers on just about everyone's car.  We are turning into a nation addicted to symbolism and signs!

Where did this all start?  It didn't use to be this way. What does this all accomplish?  Isn't it better to put our efforts into sending cards and gifts to soldiers?  I'm pretty sure everyone State-side KNOWS we support our troops when they are at war.  You don't have to tell me that with your sticker or your homemade flag.  So what is it?

It almost seems to me that its a self-serving act.  A "Look at me!  I support the troops and here's my proof!  Aren't I wonderful?"

And, the crosses along the roads.  I don't need to be reminded daily of someone's loss....but, THEY need to remind me, because they somehow can not accept it or get past it...and we will have to bear that cross along with them.  We all lose loved ones eventually, myself included, but are we suppose to make our feelings of loss a permanent reminder by sticking up signs on the sides of the road?  We have cemeteries for a place to memorialize someone.

What about yardsale signs and political signs in practically every house's front yard these days?  Half of them never get taken down or retrieved from the trees and telephone poles, and turn into nothing more than an eyesore after a while.

I've never bought a 'yellow ribbon' sticker.  Why?  Because the only one who was really benefitting from it was the people who sold them.  I'm not going to pay Shop-Smart or ABC Printing Co., to let everyone else know I support our military.  I'm an American patriot, and that should be a 'given' if you live in the U.S. of A., right?  People will use anything...death, war...anything to make money.  They aren't getting mine!

Look at the site of the WTC!  They are now having to raise money to build a memorial to accommodate people's loss so the flowers, pictures, etc., don't over-flow into the roads.  (But, little do they know...they'll be leaving those things at the 'new' memorial site, too.)

Also, let's not forget graduation sheet signs!  We have to advertise our child made it through H.S., right?

Where's this all going to end?  Or is our landscape going to end up looking like a city dump with ripped plastics, torn papers, broken signs, faded flowers, dirty objects all littering the grounds, buildings, and bridges?

The only thing I want to see flying in the breeze is the American Flag!...and we sure have an abundance of those, too.  I have come to find out that because of strict sign laws in my hometown, many flags are flying for a dual-purpose...mostly to attract attention to a business establishment.  I counted fifteen in a one mile distance one day, riding down a main road.  Some were on public property, some on private, but almost always at business sites.  (I do get annoyed when I see flags faded, ripped or improperly hung.  Or left out in the rain hanging limp and 'lifeless'.  And, I believe if you are going to leave a flag up during the night, it is suppose to be high-lighted with a floodlight, otherwise you are suppose to take it down at dusk.

Maybe I should put a sign up to let everyone know how I feel?

Oh boy Ms Fox, What a great blog and so well written. I'll start backwards, with your issue on the American Flag. People should be fined for the improper display of them. I was standing in town waiting for a bus and noticed one of the finest hotels in town flying 4 flags, each one tattered worst than the other. I called management and they said it would be taken care of. Two weeks later when it wasn't taken care of, I went into the lobby and loudly asked at the front desk why this has not been taken care of. The next day, 4 brand new crisp flags were flying from this hotel. After 9/11, people started flying flags from their cars and home. It was a lovely gesture. 7 years later, some of these flags still are there bearly able to catch a breeze. When I worked for the Post Office, that was one of the proudest jobs I had, to go out around 6AM and raise the flag.
As for the signs along the roads, sometimes it looks like a flea market in a third world country. They serve no one but the one holding or displaying it.
Lastly memorials along the highway. Why would someone want to be reminded that this is wear someones last breath might have been. Again a bit self serving. It certainly does nothing for the decease. When I read the papers I for some morbid reason drawn to the obituary column. I could never understand those little snippets that read To Betty Lou...Happy 3 Anniversary in Heaven....Do the dead get the Herald in Heaven?????

Great blog, C_Fox! To pick a specific issue you've asked about, the highway memorials, I have to say I still can't see the point in them. My brother was killed in a car accident 3 years ago the end of this month, and to this day, I can't even bear to go by where it happened, let alone put up any sort of memorial!

Dave, I don't think they get the Herald in Heaven, and I don't understand that either. I can see leaving remembrances at a graveside, as long as it's tasteful, but to take notices out in the paper is just beyond me!

Xantum, So sorry about your brother and I truly understand as I also lost my brother. We have a simple tradition in the Jewish religion. When you visit a grave you pick up a small stone and place it on the headstone. If you ever ever gone to the Holocaust exhibit by Quincy Market, people place little stones on top of the markers over there.

I "leave" a planter with 4 geraniums at the grave shared by my parents and grandparents...one for each of them. I do it because my father did it for his parents before him, eaving 2 geraniums for them. He never asked me to do it, but I know he's looking down and feels loved. I loved, and still love, each of them.

Meanikng no offense to you C_Fox, what you think of my respect...my way of showing it...means little to me. It is my commitment, my dedication, my loyalty to those I've loved the most.

Why did I know Chip wouldn't like my blog? :D

I didn't mean for this to turn into an issue on how we respect the dead, however....

Chip, if you noticed, I said "we have cemeteries for that", so I have absolutely no objection to leaving flowers at a gravesite. In fact, I don't see anything wrong with a stone left. These are naturally made objects, part of life itself, not something fashioned in China or bought in K-Mart...like fake flowers or knick=knacks. And there's nothing wrong with rememberance...its how you do it that DOES matter, imho. So, no offense taken, Chip, glad you posted!

Xantun, I would like to give my sincere sympathy to you and yours for the loss of your brother.

Foxy,

LLTA! Oh man am I sick of false piety! ...So glad to see someone else shares my opinion, even if she takes it further than I would (I don't really have an issue with the signs/flags on bridges...which I'll address momentarily).
But first I wanted to repost my favorite part of your blog:
"And, the crosses along the roads. -I couldn't have said it better.
(to be continued)

I see things a bit differently regarding the flags and signs dedicated to the troops on the overpasses, because I think such reminders should be ubiquitous. The war is obviously very ubiquitous for them - they're living in it - so I think it's an appropriate show of respect for the fact that we're basically in paradise while they're taking bullets and mortars on our behalf. It is my belief that their presence in Iraq is the reason we haven't seen another major terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11; all the terrorists would rather step to our soldiers than they would to us.
But car accidents are common, and they're just a part of life. Roadside memorials et al are nothing but a bunch of false piety.
I'm bookmarking your blog as a great reference, Foxy. ...Good work!

Don't know where my continuation went...OK...I'm done with myfoxboston for the day...tired of it already.
Why is it that comments on myfoxny are posted instantly, and here sometimes they're discarded? This site really reeks. G'bye!

Oh...and did you hear about the lady that dresses roadkill? True! I saw the pics!

Thanks, Graham! I await your next installment. :)

Thank you, Fenway and C_Fox. I'll be checking that article out when I have more time, but I did see the story on the lady dressing roadkill. All I've got to say about that is: "And they say I'M crazy!"
