It's pretty disappointing when you put your trust in someone and they end up betraying it.  Spitzer not only betrayed the public, but his family as well.

This is a man that was elected on his campaign to fight corruption and waste, yet he found no trouble in getting personally involved with prostitution or wasting money on it.

How stupid do you have to be to gamble your job, your family, your reputation on something like that when you are a public personality?  Did he forget who he was?  Did he forget his personal life will be scrutinized to he 'nth' degree if he ever wanted to go higher in politics?  Did he forget he could do jail time for the very corruption he was elected to clean up?

On top of everything did he really think giving illegal immigrants benefits was going to help his career?

Somehow, this man seems to have been on a course of self-destruction if his actions are any indication.

I am also curious as to whether his wife will forgive him, as Hillary did her for her husband.  From the images in the newscast, she looked like it was agony for her to have to stand beside him.

What do you think of all this?  Will NY forgive him? Would you?

Hi Ms. Fox... I don't think he'll do jail time, but I do think his days are numbered as Gov. of NY. Boy if I could read the mind of Mrs. Spitzer, It wouldn't be printable. I think her case is different from Hillary's in the respect of the $4300 bucks. Whatever the case he's been in a downward slide in New York, and this will prove to be the last straw.......

I would like to think that because we all have human flaws that forgiveness would be the path to take. We do also have laws and they need to be enforced and the penalties that are meted out hopefully will fit the crime. At the least I believe his political career is over so he will write a book and go on the talk show circuit making boat loads of money. How ironic.

Holy Cow...$4300....I'd be more concerned with his fiscal stupidity than his moral turpitude!!!

I think that he should step down. He has to understand that he was to be held in higher esteem with his position. He did something immoral and therefore is proving, in action, everything that he claimed he was against. Actions speak a heck of a lot louder than words. Get rid of him, get someone that is not only willing to do the job - but will be able to live according to the same standards he/she is setting for others.

Well, I think as Governor of NY, his days are indeed numbered. As far as his wife, man, I would hate to be her. It's bad enough that her husband cheated on her with a prostitute but to have it be known by everyone and have it be a public humiliation.....I just don't know if I would be able to forgive. I guess we'll see.

Chip, I was wondering about the same thing. $4300 for a prostitute??!!! Dear God, respectable jobs don't pay that these days. What is going on here??!!!

Talk about performance anxiety..but I jest. On a more serious note, he should step down as Governor. I am all for forgiveness and redemption, but the road to redemption is often a very painful one. By breaking the law and in general acting immorally, he violated the trust of the New Yorkers who overwhelmingly elected him to office. When you violate that trust, you abdicate whatever authority you were given.

Well actually June. if he had to pay $4300.00 to find something better, she may be flattered.

Of all the people I really feel bad for is those three teenage girls. That can't be a pleasant. Adults have a coping mechanism that his daughters may not have yet. I wouldn't want to set foot in school ever again.

Happyg, Must you always comment on what someone says and then write their whole statement. We know how to scroll back if we want to....

Fenwaydav - agreed. They showed pictures of the girls smiling and happy, probably from his inaugural speech. Proud of Daddy. How men can shame their families and their posts like this is WAY beyond me. Those poor girls have to go to school with all their classmates and friends knowing what a SLEEZE their Daddy has been.

Hmmmm, reminds me of another guy...let's see, what was his name? Could it be... CLINTON?!?!?

I love the part on TV with all the talking heads saying "New York has the most troubled legislature in the country...". Obviously they've never been to Massachusetts...

I think Gov. Spitzer deserves to be forgiven, in the biblical sense. He is, after all, human. That being said, he needs to step down immediately and face responsibility for what he's done. I think the most ironic part of this case is the fact that Gov. Spitzer signed on as a force to clean up the very things he's been caught doing. His political career is pretty much D.O.A.

Dave, I feel bad for his daughters too. I doubt they even want to leave the house anymore. (Not that I blame them!)

He would be stupid not to resign. A resignation on his record is better than an impeachment on his record.

I bet his first course of business since the news broke is a lucrative book deal. Then maybe an apology?

Xantun, Agreed forgiveness is something the man deserves biblical and otherwise. His trust from the public and family are another issue. When I stopped drinking and drugging people didn't all of a sudden welcome me with open arms. It's a slow process to regain the trust. Some after 6 plus years still don't completely trust. I can't blame them. He didn't kill anyone, and is certainly not the only man that ever made this indiscretion. Yes he is held to a higher degree of right or wrong and deservedly so. The people of NY voted for him on his record. That record is now tarnished. When I think of Ted Kennedy, know matter what he has or hasn't done for the State Of Massachusetts I always think of Chappaquiddick. Along with the positive, his obituary will mention that......

It seems insiders knew Spitzer better than the general public or he may not have won the Governorship. Cheers and clapping went up on the floor of Wall Street's stock exchange when the news broke. From what I've found out, he is a spoiled man who comes from a wealthy family and gets what he wants. Sources say he has spent as much as $80,000 on call girls over a period of time. So this isn't a one time incident. Tandisco, his Republican nemesis, who he once told, "I'll f-ing run over you like a steamroller!" is now calling for Spitzer to step down. But, Spitzer, is so arrogant that he is weighing his options. I guess its hard for him to give up the throne.

I'm also wondering if his wife has known about his indescretions when she talked to Hillary before this happened, as to how to have some privacy in their lives. Hmm.....

Happyg,

Interesting point, but somehow, I doubt his wife will see that way. :)

Xantun,

It is for God to forgive him first (don't mean to sound like a preacher) followed by his wife and his children. I think he's shamed himself and the city of NY and now has to pay the price. Either way, his wife is human and may feel he does not deserve to be forgiven by her. Then again....I'm shocked all the time by what some women would put up with.

June, God forgiving him was what I meant. We're all entitled to that. Everyone else? Not a guaranteed thing, and it shouldn't be. It's up to his family whether they want to forgive him.

Dave, I know what you're saying about trust. I think God will forgive Gov. Spitzer if he asks, but I doubt anyone will trust him as far as they can sling a piano for quite some time.

C_Fox, why am I not surprised that Gov. Spitzer is trying to squirm out of this? Maybe he should talk to our governor for tips on giving great "mea culpa"'s. I'm sure Deval can teach him a thing or three.
