Chip's Blog

This morning, I awoke to a disconcerting moment in the morning news.  It appears that the Republican members f the Senate have blocked the economic stimulus package.  Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not going to be that big a deal to me personally.  I’d probably have “batched” this rebate with saved money to buy my daughter a new snowmobile, leaving more money in savings.  But there is also little doubt that our economy needs a “kick in the ass”.  I was, however, EXTREMELY upset to note that Sen. McCain had flown back to Washington, YET DID NOT VOTE ON THIS MATTER.

Folks who blog here frequently will know that I have been supporting Mitt Romney.  But for the keener minds, you will also note that I have had wonderful things to say about Sen. McCain.  I like what he has been about in just about EVERYTHING.  Unfortunately, that little part I disagree with is a “deal breaker” for me:  Illegal Immigration.  His partnering with our esteemed senior Senator, Captain Oldsmobile in an effort to allow illegals amnesty (by any other name) has pushed me in the direction of Mitt.

But, after Tuesday, I had resigned myself to the fact that my choice was probably going to be Sen. McCain over Billary or Obama, an easy decision.  Now this.  Here’s my thought:

“John, you have an opinion on this matter, just as you have had one on every  matter of consequence that has come to the floor of the Senate.  You had an opinion you freely chose not to share at a time when your sharing that opinion might have been critical to both the election and the foreseeable future of our economy.  AND YOU TOOK A WALK ON US.  John, your legacy has been courage…The courage to say the unsayable.  Why have you mortgaged that?”

Folks, another one down.  John McCain has just lowered himself to the level of Billary or Barack…JOHN, COWARDICE DOESN’T LOOK GOOD ON YOU!

No, yellow isn't McCain's color at all, I'll agree with you on that. But, I'm betting that he probably did not vote to avoid being chewed in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario. He's been getting flak for not being conservative enough, so what if he disagrees with blocking the bill? More fodder for that particular cannon. He's also been getting flak for not caring about the average folks, so what if he agrees with blocking it?

I don't know about you, but even if it's McCain vs the democrats, it still doesn't change how I feel on the subject.

Oh, Xantun...I'd vote for McCain LONG before I voted for either Obama or Billary...I was just disappointed this morning. McCain's stand on immigratin notwithstanding...at least he stands for something. I respect that. Avoiding the negative consequences of a decision is just beneath him.

You've got to remember, Chip, this election is turning out to be a different animal than past ones, and that means strategy has to change. If this were a long standing pattern with McCain, then I'd be upset, but since this is rare for him, I'm thinking it has something to do with him trying to adapt his strategy. (I'm willing to give him a "mulligan" on this one.)

Giving him a "mulligan" for failing to act on the economy in the initial stages of a potential recession....sigh.

I'm disappointed that McCain didn't vote on the question of blocking the stimulus pacakge. Still, barring anything completely unforseen I'm still much more likely to vote for him than Hillary Corleone, er I mean Clinton or Barack Obama. Still when you consider that McCain once said "Political courage in practice is the resolve to do what's right whatever the personal consequences one must suffer", it is disappointing that McCain would skip this vote for seemingly political reasons.

Even worse, the stimulus package was exactly one vote short. This was not your best day Senator.

It's not really a potential recession anymore, Chip. It's pretty much fact. And yes, I give him a "mulligan" because I'm sure that if he does get the job in the corner office, he's going to be doing what he can to rectify the situation. Like I said, if it were long standing (see Hillary, Obama, Kennedy, Kerry, etc), then I wouldn't be quite as open-minded. He's out there trying to win an election, and if he'd gone republican and blocked the bill, don't forget, he would have alienated his core block of supporters, veterans. (The bill that was blocked would extend the rebate to retirees and disabled vets, don't forget.) I seriously doubt he's going to do this again, especially if it's not his style, which we both know it's not.

I'm not sure about the why the program would have excluded disabled vets....but I still think that a man of conscience...and most especially a veteran, would have voted AGAINST his party and FOR disabled vets....

There should be no Presidency without ethics...

Like or dislike George Bush...he tells you what he's going to do, then does it no matter if you agree or disargree..and that irritates all those but those who hate being lied to.

Chip, the bill that the Republicans blocked called for the rebate to be extended to disabled vets and senior citizens, as well as working taxpayers. I'm certainly not excusing McCain's actions, but especially in light of Mitt Romney suspending his campaign, I see his point. With all I know about McCain, I seriously wonder if this is a reverse "campaign" promise, i.e., telling the conservative crowd he's not in favor of extending the rebates to everyone, but then once in office, the rebates go to everyone. (Or, in this case, it looks like a compromise has already been hammered out. Any idea if McCain had anything to do with it?)

XAntun, it added a bunch of other stuff too...I don't know what McCain had to do with it. My guess is that that if he had any roll in it, he'd be on TV this morning stumping based on it.

But the bottom line is that it was an excellent compromise...in the true spirit of our government.

And after yesterday, I am now a "McCain Man", lol

I'm not giving up on this. There really was only 1 worthy candidate, and to me he's still worthy regardless of what a political party tries to tell me.

I'm unenrolled, and will be writing in Romney, regardless.

There is still only 1 candidate who has proved, that he will turn campaign promises into action when in office. At the moment we need to eliminate the deficit, boost our economy, and push through several reforms on domestic policies, such as privatizing social security, creating appropriate immigration reform, nationwide privatized healthcare reform, a national board of education, rebuild our infrasture, etc. Mitt Romney is the only candidate who PROVED he will actually do that.

Here is a website we will be tracking people's endorsements of his write-in campaign on. It's not much but its a start.
