Chip's Blog

I took by truck to the dealership this morning...my 4 WD was not working.  I left it there for repairs, and was offered a ride to work three towns away.  I happily agreed, and a minivan marked "Patterson Chevrolet Courtesy Van" pulled up.  I got in the passenger seat next to a young man with skin darker than mine, two earrings and a ball cap.  He asked where I was going with a thick accent.

As we politely passed the time on our drive, he mentioned the Dominican Republic.  I asked if he was Dominican, and he said yes.  Chip being Chip, I asked him how hard it was for him to come here with a green card.  He looked at me with a proud smile and said he had worked hard for 8 years ot get here.  He siad his parents had preceded him.  He spoke of loving his job and the dealership he worked for.  "They treat us like family,"  Unable to resist asking , I asked him how he felt about illegal aliens.  He became indignant.  How dare these people not follow the rules.  "How could they so disrespect America as to come without permission."  We talked about this issue for a bit.

I asked him if he intended to apply for citizenship.  He proudly told me he was and was studying now.  He then said some things that humbled me...truly and sincerely humbled me.  He went on to tallk about the opportunitites he was afforded here. He said that all you had to do was to work hard and you could get anything you wanted.  He proudly said he had a nice car and a nice apartment.  He talked of pride in the job he did as Pattersn Chevrolet's "detailer".  And he spoke with  pride of his desire to be an American citizen......

I told him he was an inspiration.  I told him that he had more appreciation for our great country than most naturally born citizens.  And I didn't say one thing I thought...because for one brief moment I was ashamed of my country.  I was ashamed for two reasons:

1.  We discriminate against folks like him...not me and maybe not you, but way too many of us.  This man IS America...in its finest form.

2.  I was ashamed that we had a Presidential candidate whose wife is not as proud of the opportunities we afford men like him.

I wanted two things...for Michelle Obama to have the honor of spending a half an hour with this young man like I did.  I would do her good.

Secondly, you can be damned sure I'll be taking my truck to Patterson for detailing when the snow is off the ground.  I will support this young man in any way I can...and be humble in my service.

Thank you Chip. There are more of us out there than people realize. Of course, it's not interesting to do news articles on the good ones. ;)

I thought of you a couple of weeks ago. I was watching this spanish talk show named 'Cristina' which comes on every Monday night at 10pm on Univision. Cristina is a very well known, loved and respected cuban journalist in the hispanic community and has been in the talk show arena longer than Oprah, I think, or maybe just as long. Anyway, she was having this show with hispanics that support and defend illegal immigration and hispanics that oppose it and fight to help the U.S stop it. It was incredibly interesting to hear their points. They were all from the same places, mostly Mexico or Central America, but their views were so incredibly opposed...it was interesting. You'd think even if they were opposed, they'd commiserate with the other point of view. Nope. I thought you would have found that interesting.

Chip, sadly, I don't think an hour would be enough for a dimwit like Michelle Obama to get the point. And if I didn't know that you live on the other side of the state, I'd ask where this dealer is. My truck will probably need a good detailing once the snow melts. (Dirt roads in the winter time are NOT your floor mats' friends!)

And I'm with you on the discrimination...Too many people don't realize that there is a difference between legal and illegal immigrants. Then again, not too many people know some of the wonderful examples that you and I know.

Yeah, June, good news doesn't sell and doesn't rate...Shame, because stories like yours could really help with the immigration debate.

Yes, June I would have. There is so much I took out of an half hour conversation than I can tell you. I prayed last night the "guru's" at Fox25 would put this on the community pages...AND thought what a SUPERB serment it would be if one of the "talent" bought into this and ran a series, "THE MELTING POT".

You know, June, MY ancestors are not indiginous to North America either. They were Scottish and Welsh. They came here on a boat too or would have on a plane had there been those.

We are all immigrants. Our strength does not come from where we came from, but from how hard we work HERE.

As an aside, he spoke a bit about illegal immigration of Haitians into the Dominican Republic. I'd give my right arm to have a blog appear here from someone who knows the Dom Rep better than I do....hint hint...about THAT!!!

Chip,
It is good to hear a story about someone not from this country who is proud to be here. Proud of what he had to do to get here rather than trying to cut corners. I know many people who were not born here but love America like it has always been their home. The only part I have a problem with is that you said you were ashamed of your country. How can you say anything about what Obama's wife said when you say something similar? There have been many times in my life I have been disappointed with some people. Many times I have not been proud of some of my fellow Americans. I have never, ever been ashamed of my country. I have always been proud to be an American and always will be. Any shame I feel would be for someone else, not against this great country. Ignorance breeds racism. Ignorance breeds hatred. Ignorance is the reason for so many of this country's problems. But no matter what, I will never say I am ashamed to be an American.

Excellent blog chipper, thats exactly how my Sicilian grandfather did it...an worked in the Watertown Arsenal building weapons for WW2 an my Great grandmother came from Liverpool they all came Legally....i find if you give some one something for free etc they dont appreciate it....thats why I'm not for amnesty plus they are line cutters an the ones who did the right away get a terrible message that cheaters always win.....and if you follow the laws you loose out! an never mind the precedent it sets to all others who have the idea of coming here for free ride....we are a nation of laws an we have to have laws or their will be chaos....one reason the 14th ammendment was created equal treatment under the law after the civil war becuase the southern states mostly who lost the war were not abiding by the constitution an depriving people of their civil rights an due process....th e14th ammendment also gave freed slaves an women the right to bear arms! for the first time.....the Pro gun people maybe argue the framers wrong ammendment or at least the weaker argument the 2nd ammendment becuase the left argues MILITIA'S wrong the 14th Amendment spells it out clearly the right to bear arms....but mostly it gives everyone equal rights equal civil liberties....

jonsmom,

"for one brief moment I was ashamed of my country." I said a brief moment...and I am entitled to a tad of ambivalence?

I am a proud American..you must know that by now...but there are things we do that don't bring me pride...

And your point...I think maybe it was the "humbling" ...that I should be taught a lesson by a man who is not even a citizen yet.

Ya...you're right...I was ashamed of myself, not my country I guess.

Chip,

I'll try to please you with a blog about Haitian immigration into the Dominican Republic, but first, I'll have to go to the greatest source of information in my world....my grandpa! I have an awareness of the feelings of Dominicans regarding Haitian immigration (similar to the ones we have here about illegal immigration in general), but I came to this country when I was 5 and my first hand experience is very limited. I'll talk to my grandfather about what it was like growing up in DR and having that issue to face every day and get back to you. I know the 'animosity' between the 2 sides of the island began when Haiti invaded and took over the Dominican Republic and ruled it for 22 years in the early 1800's. Now, I think it's more of an issue of the people of a very, very poor nation (Haiti) trying to have a better life in a nation that's barely doing a little better. It's tough!!!! I'll see what grandpa says. :)

The more you can do, June, to teach us "white guys" how similar we are is a service to all of us. And I'm betting you can also teach us some differences that wouod make us jealous!!

I try to remember that it is difference that makes life fun.

Its too bad we will charge that poor man upwards of 3 times the normal amount just so he can go to school. Its sad we will make it very expensive and very hard for him to get a green card so he can vote. Its sad he has to pay all the sames taxes we do (and more) and not get access to half the benifits.

It's funny, Mark....he is GLAD he pays taxes...he's PROUD of it. He askes for nothing special and resents those who do...

I've gottat tell ya, I respect him a boatload more than I ever will you. He has his decency left....

You should talk to my friend David. He's been in country for 10 years, but isnt considered a state resident, so he gets to pay $3,000 for a 900 Dollar class! Why the illegal immigrants we went to school with are charged 900, because they dont tell people they are illegal. Also my friend David has a 3.9, is hispanic, and his father is widowed, sounds like he should be getting a grant or scholarship, right? No no no, thats only for residents.
While you shared a card ride with a man who may or may not be real, I grew up with immigration and immigrants, in a place swarming with them.

Oh no I dont have your respect, but I've got your number
