Pedophiles and "Perv Magnets"

As is my style here, I am going to re-visit an issue, but look at it from a slightly different perspective.  The death of Brooke Bennett in a small Vermont town, and the circumstances of her death, along with some of the debate cry out for a different perspective.

It is doubtful that this unfortunate young lady did not die at the hands of her pedophile uncle.  It is aslo equally as doubtful that her ex-stepfather didn't have a hand in both her potential victimization, and in her death.  These facts alone are sufficient to bring up the lunch of the toughest of folks....

But the debate has moved to the parents...to the mother.  The more than reasonable question that is being asked is : Where was the mother?  Where were the parents?  These are excellent questions looking at this from the "parental responsibility" perspective.  Anyone who has read any of my threads knows I'm a big "personal" and "parental responsibility" person.

Folks, that is insufficient in this case.  You can line up a hundred folks to tell me she should have known and I'll say back to them:  She DID know!  It is just humanly impossible to have a Level 3 classified (more than one convictions folks...more than one...) brother (brother in law?) who is a pedophile, and an ex-husband who aided him in his perverse criminal activities, without knowing.  Please don't offer that option.  It only helps the pedophiles.

Look at the house.  A 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath center entrance colonial with a two car attached garage?  New Construction?  No other houses to be seen in the news footage?  Puh-lease.  How did he afford that?  Level 3 sex offenders can't get a job flippin' burgers at the local Mickey D's, to say nothing of having the wherewithall to live in a house as big as mine!!!  Puh-lease.

Here's the sad truth.  What you have seen is the tip of the pedophilic iceberg in Randolph, Vermont.  This "ring" was large, and profitable.  And this mother knew about it.  You see, she is a "perv magnet".  She is around them, and they are around her.  She was involved sexually with at least one of them (her ex-husband) and God knows how many else.  She knew.

So let's stop making excuses.  Let's stop asking questions that are completely relevant in other situations, but are grossly naive here.  Let's acknowledge that where perverts exist, so do pervert magnets.  And, let's hold them equally responsible.  We need to do two things:

1.  We need to broaden our perspective on accountability where child sexual abuse is concerned.  We need to hold those, who are likely spectators, equally as responsible as the perpetrators.  Legally responsible.

2.  And, we need to develop a technology that can cure people of pedophilic urges.  We need to invest as much money and time and emotion as we have to finding the cures for cancer or AIDS.

When all is said and done in Randolph, Vermont, we're going to find many many more perpetrators, and more victims...many many more victims.  My guess?  Mom was a victim at some point in her life...Not an excuse...an observation.

nomorehacks, I'd like to add full frontal lobotomy to the list of potential cures for pedophilia.

Chip, of course we're just seeing the "tip of the iceberg" here...This is probably the first time something has gone this wrong for this ring.

And if it can be proven that Brooke's mother knew about the ring, then she should be brought up on the exact same charges as the uncle and stepfather are. Every single one, including capital murder, if that charge is brought against Jacques.

Here's the problem with castration: It removed ONE of the implements a pedophile uses to harm a child sexually (or a rapist to an adult), but it dones not stop the URGE. This is an issue that defies easy solutions. We need t invest our knowledge base to learn how to treat it, not out of any great and glorious love of pedophiles, but out of an honest desire to truly protect our children. I frankly don't give a rat's *ss about the comfort of pedophiles, but I understand that punishment alone will not cure this issue long term. Punishment makes US feel better, but is just plain ineffective in protecting the vulnerable.

I'm tired of hearing about all the excuses as to why people do what they do. Oh, I was abused as a child, so I couldn't stop myself from doing it to someone else. Well folks, I got news for ya, it doesn't work that way. I was abused as a child (for over 5 years) and I turned out just fine. I have children of my own and the only thing my childhood has done too me in regards to my children is to be more over-protective of them. I still remind my 16 yr old when he goes outside to shoot hoops in the driveway to make sure he doesn't talk to strangers if they pull up in a car. I'm even worse with my 12 yr old daughter when she goes outside. These people who hurt children are just horrible people and not because they were once abused. Any person who hurts a child should be executed, plain and simple. :)

I don't think it's curable. It is as normal to them as heterosexuality is to us. All I can think of for a cure is A "Clockwork Orange"

Oh, and before anyone panics, I am a mother, not a father... :) However, knowing that a mother could know who her daughter is around and does nothing to stop it, should definitely be punished as harshly as possible. I would do anything to protect my children. I know EVERY single person my children are around at all times. Like I said before, I am over-protective of my children.

OK, tod1214, then what do we do with the mother after the uncle is put away? Or the step-father who only "obstructed justice"? What do we do with the people who hae purchased internet porn from the uncle (or whatever esle he was doing to pay for that lavish lifestyle? Or the neighbors who may have heard "rumors" and did nothing?

This issue defies simple solutions. I'm all for the death penalty, not as a deterent, but as a convenience, but it, alone, is woefully inadequate to solve a problem that has as many layers as this one.

I agree, it isn't as simple as the death penalty. I do think, though, tougher laws and not just a slap on the wrist will wake some of these people up and realize there is a penalty if you do something wrong. And for this, I'm talking about the mother, the people who may have heard rumors, etc. Anyone who knows anything about a child being hurt in any way, needs to stand up and say something to someone. Unfortunately, I do not see things changing to help children stay safe, in my lifetime and I am not quite 40 yet.

Hi Chip: This uncle is a maggot. Even if it turns out he is not the murderer, he should die for his involvement.

I am not ready to blame the mother. This uncle and others carefully selected this girl and had a plan layed out for months.

Back of the mother until you hear more facts.

what are the facts ? # 1 a little 12 year old girl is DEAD , thru no fault of her own ! her mother might be a perv magnet, but she was not.the mother,the father and the uncle should be held accountable for the death of this poor child. she did not ask to be born, and she certainly did not ask to die at her young age.If her mother,father and uncle are not to blame, who is ??????????? this little girl is in a much better place now,she went through hell on earth so, I know she is in a much better place !

We are way to quick to absolve folks like this woman from responsibility. This guy was a Level 3...multiple convictions. It ain't rocket science. My opinion? She as good as pimped her...

Were that my daughter..and he her uncle....he'd understand, in no uncertain terms, which body parts he'd forfiet shortly before his death, were he to come within a half a mile of my daughter.

AND, my daughter would understand, in no uncertain terms, how much hazard she'd place herself if she got within a half a mile of this maggot.

I'm not sure if this mother new or not(I have a hard time believing she didn't know) but just to let these perverts around her knowing they are level 3 sex offenders should be a crime in it self.

There is some wisdom in that, but I think maybe the better solution is to simply DEMAND better protection for our children. Maybe parents who do not protect their chilodren should have to give them over to childless couples who are willing to protect them. Her behavior is simple unacceptable.

In my heart, I know she knew. I also know that there are a bunch of guilty consciences in Randolph VT. Alot of people knew...

You are correct Chip, and that makes it even sadder when you know there are couples that what kids and would love and protect them but can't have them.

This is what you get for the regan 1980's deregulation of everything. look at us today we have laws on the books that no one follows we all have to be self policing. This perv should be fried like KFC chicken. They are all sorry when they get caught. all you have to do is watch NBC dateline show "the catch a preditor" once they get nailed by teh police they are all crying saying I won't do it again. but you know what I am tired of the phony tears from these people. Now up in vermont this guy said he had a sex ring. were the people up there just this stupid? I guess so. As for parents we should be involved in protecting our kids and be aware of flaky relatives too.

I have to say, I have NEVER heard a sane person who can lay the increase in crime at the feet of the deregulation of industry, Patches. I'd like to hear that theory expounded on...with a little more logic. How does depending less on government regulation cause us to depend less on parents?

As a mother, I agree with you 100%. Before the horrible news broke about her uncle's involvement and later, her death, my instinctive response was, "WHY WAS A 12 YEAR OLD BEING DROPPED OFF ALONE ANYWHERE?!?!"

This mother has a pattern of bringing men into and out of her child's life. The poor little girl was on her 2nd stepfather, and she was only 12. Based on that information alone, I would dare to say that the mother's first priority was not in bringing up her child in a stable, safe environment. I would say prosecutors should be looking at child endangerment charges on the mother, at the least.

Chip: Maybe you know things about this case I am not up to speed with.

I have not heard where the mother knew the girl and uncle were having contact.

But precaution is good. You know I am all for that and one can never be too careful.

Atually, theEliteOne, I have not heard the mother was aware of the contact either. HOWEVER, we ahve a stepfather who is invooved in tampering with evidence in support of the uncle. I simply do not believe he tampered with evidence alone. I think he tampers with little girls too. It is the only sensible explanation for his behavior. The mother WAS aware of HIS contact with the girl.

But I'm going beyond the "facts as presented by the press". I'm adding to that a certain common sense that is required to protect children. And absent that common sense, more children will be raped and more children will be murdered....

NOW....in all honesty...could we convince YOU that the mother didn't know about her ocntact with him? Or that she has met her responsibility to Brooke?
