Morning...

If you caught our picture of the day this morning at 8:15 a.m., then you saw that Paula from Hudson, New Hampshire, had sent in a picture of a (small) squirrel with a (large) walnut. She captured the picture in her driveway up in New Hampshire.

At my house in Natick over the past few days, I've noticed several squirrels scurrying around gathering food for the winter. Maybe it's me, but it seems sooner this year... and the squirrels seem more visible and brazen than usual. My oldest son, Caleb, (he'll be 3 next week) even noticed when a squirrel kept running back and forth on our deck.

Has anyone else noticed this? I know temperatures have been a little below average for the past week or so, but it seems early for them to be this aggressive. Maybe I'm 'nuts'?

Cindy,

I haven't paid particular attention, but I will going forward. However, I say if the squirrels are preparing early, maybe we should too?

Hi Cindy,

Funny you mention this.. My parents noticed the food in the bird feeder they have out in their back yard was emptying quicker than normal, they assumed it was just hungrier birds. Then one day after pouring more seeds into the feed box, my dad saw a family of squirrels basically looting it minutes later. He's gone from hanging it from a tree to placing it atop a thin pole, which he hopes will prevent the squirrels from climbing but still allow the birds access. But I digress. Yes, they have seemingly become quite brazen. And perhaps this early storage of food is a sign that we're in for a long cold winter?? Maybe they know something we don't..?

And an early happy birthday to Caleb!

Yes, I saw this picture and it was too cute.

I have had the same squirrels come to my house over the years. A few running away with the cat toys which I left on the terrace.

I've noticed an increase in squirrel activity this week too, Cindy! This morning I was outside sitting on the patio enjoying my coffee, and two young squirrels came racing by and almost ran over my foot! They are becoming bolder and friskier; maybe it is the colder weather?! They have also been 'caught' raiding the bird feeder, as mentioned by BrooklineRStan- haha. I certainly hope this doesn't mean a long cold winter, although we should probably expect one. Do you think this means a colder than average winter? Maybe we all are 'nuts'!!

Funny, I haven't seen ANY squirrels recently. We used to have HORDES of them. My guess is that too many of them have been whacked by speeding cars. The speed limit on my road is 30, but the cops in Plympton are useless when it comes to preventing them from cruising at a cool 55. (Sorry guys if you're reading this, but I'm afraid it's true...)

Three Cindy blogs in 3 days and all of them have titles beginning with "s" ... my useless fact for the day. My backyard is pretty much a golf course with plenty of trees, so I see tons of squirrels year round and they never strike me as shy. But I've seen a lot more of them recently when I am running along the Charles and those seem less timid than usual. Maybe a squirrel revolution is around the corner. Oh and 2 points for the bad pun about "being nuts" but minus 100 points for the wet and not so warm summer. You can redeem yourself by making sure snowfall this winter is less than 15 inches in total and there are no days below 30 degrees. I'd prefer to have a heating bill below $30,000 for the winter please.

Ok... so it appears that I'm not totally 'nuts' - that's good to hear! Thanks!
Still not sure if there's any correlation bewtween these litte creatures and what lies ahead for our weather this winter. I guess we'll all have to wait and see. BTW 'DunderMifflin' nice observation with the three "s" blogs- I didn't even realize. Unfortunately, if you'd like those winter wishes to come true... I think you'll have to move south for the winter! Sorry!
Stay dry this weekend all.

Hi Cindy,

We are also seeing a lot of squirrels busy at work, too. I sure wish people would stop blaming you for the weather..lol

You know what they say about squirrels gathering more nuts than usual? The winter will be bad.
I say, the squirrels are just hungry.

Cindy,

My 6 month old Dylan is fascinated with you every time he here's your voice on the television. My husband and I took our son up to VT this weeknd to catch his first ever fall foliage.

Thanks 'heatherfont' ... me too!
Sandra- you are not the first person to tell me that about your son. There is something about my (annoying IMO) voice that children Dylan's age seem to like. I would say in the 13 years (gulp) I've been doing this... that I've literally been told that more than 50 times. Funny... my boys could care less- they prefer Elmo! :)

When are we going to stop looking at squirrels and look to more sound evidence of what the winter might bring...like water temps just offshore. 59 F and very slow to fall. I think that's a good indication the winter will not be bad...with about as many rain events as snow events in Boston. Arctic sea has NOT made a tremendous rebound over the same time last year. I would call it modest.
