Yep, after some frosty mornings out in metro west this week, I'm now officially "done" with my garden this year. I've picked the last of the green beans, snap peas and will still enjoy the mini pumpkins on the vine for a while. I've harvested the green tomatoes and placed them with apples (a trick I learned courtesy of Russell's Garden Center) and now just wait for them to ripen.

Even though I love this time of year, this process always make me sad. I will miss spending time in the garden, and especially miss fresh tomatoes. I dread having to purchase my first "grocery store" tomato again- is there such a thing as a 'tomato snob'? Maybe I've become one.

Anyone out there still gardening? There are lots of cold crops you can do this time of year... it's just not my thing.

Enjoy the sunshine!

-Cindy

Cindy, If there is anything I envy about a home owner (renter)is the garden. You are right, nothing like home grown. I could rent space at the victory garden at the park, but that's not the same as stepping out your back door.

Amen 'fenwaydav'... I've already gone out to my back deck a few times in the past couple of weeks to grab fresh basil forgetting it was gone. Guess I'll have to buy that too...

Cindy, you're no tomato 'snob'! What's the trick about the tomatoes and the apples?

I share in your sadness, I will miss seeing all that the garden has to provide (albeit my parents' garden that I tend to is all plants and flowers) but I could use a break from pulling out weeds on weekends!

Not completely done with gardening work there, though, we're about to plant new flower bulbs for next Spring's bloom and I hope they start to root before the first hard frost hits.

Hey Cindy thought apples where best after a good hard frost? I was told that brought out the flavor.

Sorry for the 'apple confusion'. I learned from the folks at Russells that the old method of sticking your green tomatoes on the window sill to ripen is ... ok... BUT... for better results stcik them in a brown paper bag with an apple or two. Apparently the apple gives off ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening.
As for the frost and apple flavor 'thinksnow'... I've heard that too- but not sure if it's true.
A little water for my empty garden this morning.

Hi Cindy,

Look at your garden like the song "Frosty the Snow Man" He'll be back again, and so won't your garden. Until then, Shaws or Stop and Shop for now, unless you buy organic. Sorry Cin.....

Wow. Hey Brookline fan, what do you mean Cindy's not a 'tomato snob'? She stated that she's gonna have to slum it and by a supermarket tomato, like the common folk do.
Oh the horror Cindy! What happened to the little girl from downeast Maine I used to know?

My thumb turned green (sort of) VB... that's all. You don't even eat tomatoes do you?
BTW... 'jovanone' Frosty was one of my favorites as a kid- I'm looking forward to having my 3yr old watch it this year.

Hi Cindy,

I don’t know if you remember me, but I met you in Braintree this summer on the Zip trip. You asked me if I liked fishing because of the tattoo I have. I have to say you were so nice to everyone, taking pictures and signing autographs for everyone who asked. You really do have the patients of a Saint and truly one of the nicest people I have ever met. Unfortunately the picture we took together didn’t come out and I didn’t realize it until I got home. Hope to meet you again sometime to say hello and take another picture. You are really a very nice young lady and a great roll model for everyone’s kids. Keep up the good work Cindy.

Hi Cindy. I meet this tim eof year with sadness and relief. I planted my tomatoes in 5 gal buckets this year so I could move the healthier ones into the greenhouse to keep them going, I did the same with my bell peppers, jalapenos and basil. I still have a few softball size eggplants hanging in there, but I will be gathering them up before the weekend. Greenbeans almost done, cabbage coming in this weekend too.
The relief part comes in when I iknow that I have canned up everything I possible could from my garden and the pantry is restocked.
Now its time to sit back, note what worked this year, what did not and plan the garden for next year. I am actually making the garden larger this year and making 2 cold frames for late season lettuce.
But the sad part is, no more digging in the dirt with my favorite chicken hanging out stealing the worms. I will have to find other things to do outside, pretend to garden?

NellyBelle.... you are a true gardner! I just play in the dirt and am amazed when things actually grow! I hear you on the relief part though. It is a relief not to have to worry about watering and weeding anymore... one less thing on my 'things to do' list. I did buy a package of grape tomatoes though for the first time in a LONG time over the weekend and it saddened me.
Jovanone and Colleenagnes I do remember meeting BOTH of you on Zip Trips this summer. I also remember your grandaughter... and am glad she had a great time. I'll 'get' those guys back someday... don't you worry!
Sorry your picture didn't come out Jovanone... if you'd like you can send your mailing address to weather@myfoxboston.com and I will send you a picture in the mail.

Cindy...look at your local market for hydroponic sherry tomatoes. They will save you from depression when you bite into those tasteless grape tomatoes. If your market doesn't have them, ask for them. There is a HUGE hydroponic tomato farm in Maine. I was in awe when I saw the size of their operation. These tomatos actually taste like, tomatos!
