Even though I am a staunch conservative, I voted for Ross Perot in 1992 and I voted for Steve Forbes in 1996, so don't think I am bluffing. There are many out there just like me. We handed Bill Clinton the win in both elections and don't think for a second that I wouldn't suffer the same exact result in the name of what is right.

(Great... my first post here and I am coming off as a kook)

I see the groups who are following Ron Paul and I am beginning to understand their motives even though I do not agree with them. Nothing attracts the fringe like a candidate who offers something close to anarchistic freedom.

Frankly I am sick of being told what to do. I like smoking, french fries, beer, fireworks, right-wing radio, guns, muscle-cars, porno, and waterfront property.

I did a strictly factual/mathematical tally of who wishes to protect my rights to those things and only one candidate comes close.... and don't think I have my reservations... but hey. The base of Paul's campaign is rooted in the same exact things that our founders and military have fought for. Yes, it is true that some kooks are aligning with him but isn't that true of our whole country? Is not the USA a place where even kooks have a place? (As long as we keep an eye on them).

All in all, I wish to be fought on my current stance and I look forward to any decent arguments other than the same old "But the 9/11 truthers like him!" because the fact is that everyone has to vote for someone and just because the pathetic "truthers" vote for him is no reason for me to discard Ron Paul as anything other than a person who sticks closely to the Constitution of the United States of America, which is about the only thing in this world that has never let me down.

More to come from me. thanks for listening :)

Devnulled, I voted for Ross many years ago too. I was sick of the status quo. I felt terrible after learning that a vote for him turned the tide for Clinton. Like you I wanted to make a statement. But 8 years of Clinton far outweighed the "statement" payoff. I like Ron Paul but am a strong supporter of Mr. Romney. Why, because I have know him personally for over 20 years. His example in family and faith are sorely needed in our country. His expertise in business is unmatched in any of his opponents. His knowledge and ability to negotiate and execute deals and his management style are brilliant very powerful. His personality is what you see on air. It's the same off, he is genuine. He loves the constitution and what it stands for, he is at heart a traditionalist. His father George instilled in him at an early age a love of the USA and all it stands for. He had a fantastic mentor in his father. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The real power of change is in the senate and congress, the president can only steer focus and issues in a direction. the houses make the real changes. I think Romneys ability to communicate and negotiate with the senate will surpass the abilities of any other candidate.

I cannot agree more with what you have written about Romney, Captain, but it is what you have not written that sticks in my craw.

Mitt Romney is my second choice at the moment for the very reasons you listed. The reason he is second instead of first is his severe leanings toward the left. Most notably, that horrendous COMPULSORY health care reform he left us with. I can think of many things that need fixing in our state and country and forced health care enrollment is not my idea of fixing things. We should be LESS independent on the government to solve our woes. A concession to government powers is theft of personal freedom and I do not like it one bit.

D. I see where you are coming from. I felt the same way about seatbelt laws. People are smart enough on their own to buckle up we don't need to be forced by government laws. Health insurance is more complex yet I understand your argument completely it's the principle of freedom that your talking about. Because of health cares complexity and it's unreachable cost for many of our citizens that are self employed under employed and not employed I think he enacted this measure.Too many were sucking on the teat of government on this one. He wanted to force independence on people I think. How can this be, forcing independence sounds crazy. Independent to choose a carrier at a lower cost freeing the taxpayer from an extra burden. He shifted a burden on a sliding scale back to the uninsured and off the tax paying citizen. The free care pool is probably smaller and hospitals are probably paying a lot less out in free care costs lowering the cost of aspirin from 200 bucks a pill back to the 3 cents it really costs. Which helps the consumer. Much more complex than fastening a belt buckle. I see how it can stick in your craw though. But if this is the only objection you have about Mitt then wonderful. Look at all the other good things he is capable of doing, nobodies is going to fit our image perfectly but he comes awful close to doing it for me:)

Devnulled,

The problem is that PEOPLE cannot be trusted, and the government is made of people, too.

However, at least the government gives us a fighting chance to have some say in the things that affect ALL of us.

That list of your desirables -- smoking, french fries, beer, fireworks...(etc.) -- are things that don't just affect the people who use them.
Second-hand smoke could give me cancer. French fries make the cops (who are supposed to protect me) full of malaise in their fatness. People get drunk on beer and then I have to worry about getting into a head-on collision with them...I could go on and on...
(due to the fickle nature of this website and it's tiny byte count, I'm going to wait until this posts before I even bother to say more...)

"Nothing attracts the fringe like a candidate who offers something close to anarchistic freedom."

Anarchy is no good, and your choice of adjectives is very revealing. Some people just want all of the rights in the world with no regard to how such things affect other people. It's called being "SELFISH", and it's really something you ought to be keeping a secret, Devnulled. I mean, I just re-read your post and it really smacks of a guy who's boasting of his selfishness and threatening conservative candidates that if they don't pander to it then they won't get your vote. Guess what? I don't think they care. Some of us out here still have some morals and some gumption...and we certainly don't want a candidate who cares about whether or not you "like porn."

But I'm quite thankful for your post here, actually. I'm going to refer to it the next time I'm arguing with somebody as to why they SHOULDN'T be voting for Ron Paul.

Graham, "the people cannot be trusted"?! "..the government gives us a chance to have some say..."?!

Where do you get the idea we, the people, cannot be trusted? Do you realize what that sounds like? It sounds like you think we need to be taken care of by a handful of men in power. That is not the premise our nation was founded upon.

Who do you think is in charge in this country? The govenment *must* answer to the people...NOT the other way around, Graham!

In addition, people have to realize many things in our world are hazardous to some extent. Some things more than others. However, there obviously is a market for these things and therefor, will always be around unless you live under a dictatorship. We don't have one. We have freedom. Freedom of choice. The best we can do is restrict things, but in a fair and reasonable manner so that everyone is happy. Are they doing that with cigarette smoking? No! Instead of allowing a percentage of restaurants in any one area to allow smoking, they ban it altogether. Where is the fairness? Where is the equal rights? Should we ban french fries? Let' ban scissors, anything and everything under a certain size so no one will choke on it. (There goes our nickels and dimes.) Where do you draw the line? I don't like porn, but it must be filling some need, or it wouldn't exist. Better than taking it away from people, would be to allow it only under strict guidelines. We don't do that...maybe because it makes too much sense?

Graham, I understand what you are saying, and that is, basically, that some things in this world are evil and we must get rid of them for the good of everyone.

Well, I'm saying, you aren't going to be able to do it! Things like prostitution have been around since Biblical days and that's because it fills a need for some people. Ask yourself why men go to prostitutes?

Look at the Islamic fundamentalist; do they allow it? No. In fact women can go out unless accompanied by a male. They see it as "evil"...well, they see all women as evil. But, look at how they treat women. Women are raped on a regular basis, and there is little she can do about it. In fact, if she is found out to have been raped, her family will ostricize her or she will be beaten or killed.
That, Graham, is life without prostitution!

Man, generally speaking, is selfish. Selfishness comes from our basic instincts for survival. You and everyone else that wants to get rid of it, are blowing into the wind. It won't happen. The most man can do in a civilized world, is try to control it. Yes, its good to be unselfish, and some of us are able to do it better than others. But, the bottom line is that you can not have what is called freedom, if any one group or culture dictates what others can do in their personal lives. The reason we have laws is to maintain basic civility in order to have some kind of peace in our society. We have laws concerning prostitution, murder, stealing, rape...all those things. And, we the people *made* those laws, not some dictator. Our government, federal, state, a

"But cigarettes? What's their purpose? To kill people and make tobacco companies rich?"

Partly right; their purpose is to addict people to make people rich. Smoking is another thing that has been around forever. Its not new, but it has been discovered that it can kill you. But, as long as there is money to be made and jobs to be had, we won't see cigarettes disappearing, either. They won't be able to eliminate them any better than they tried to eliminated alcohol, that other evil.

-- I just re-read your post and it really smacks of a guy who's boasting of his selfishness and threatening conservative candidates that if they don't pander to it then they won't get your vote. -- (Quote from graham cracker)

I could not have said it better myself.

Our country was founded on freedom for the individual and acknowledgment of the rights of the individual. Lucky me because I am my favorite individual.

Selfishness is the ultimate moral. It is a commitment to strive to do what is right for one's self. I would not want to spend my life trying to do what is right for other people.. on their terms and Lord God in Heaven knows they do not want me striving for them by what is right in *my* terms. I want to spend my life doing what is right for myself and I wish to vote for candidates that also share that ideal.

I do not care how a Republican acts.

Graham_cracker. I will not tolerate rude posts on my blog. You have your own blog for any childish rants. Rants deleted. Insults deleted.

A moral is a particular definition of right and wrong. A person can let someone else define it or a person can wise up and define it themselves.

My morals are *my* morals. I do not let other people define my morals. Some people let others define their morals.

So be it. Life goes on.

The one thing we all have in life is our own lives and it is up to us to choose how we live our lives. I choose a morally correct path defined by morally correct choices of my *own* making and that entails SELF choice which concludes a SELFISH choice.

Certain people hate that I think for myself.

I fail to see what other people have to do with my choices other than what I care to let other people into my choices with in the first place.

If you have a comment, please behave and let it be known. My blog is a blog of knowledge and discussion.. not anger and whatever you have been up to.
