As a kid growing up in Seattle it was common knowledge that all boys were expected to serve their country. At 18 you signed up for the draft and either beat them to the punch and joined another branch or in some cases deferred for college or just went in the Army when the draft called your number. With the Cold War going at full swing there was very little argument about what was expected of us. These were the days that every child in school was subject to air raid drills. The alarm would go off and whatever we were doing we would have to stop and crawl under our desks. This was nothing new because we had the same experience during World War II. Little did we know that the “Duck and Cover” routine would be worthless in the event of an Atomic Attack. I guess it made us feel better that we had a routine to follow. Growing up at the very foot of Boeing Field with B-17’s of WWII and then later with B-47’s and B-52’s all around made us a real target should there be any type of air attack.
I honestly can’t remember anyone I knew who actively tried to get out of the draft or tried to avoid service. I’m sure there were some but most of us knew what was expected of us and had been raised to be ready for what we knew was inevitable in our minds, a war with the Russians. I guess being raised in that era has given me and my peers a stronger view and a distrust of the Russians that others don’t seem to have. When Gorbachev made nicey nice with Reagan and capitulated on the Eastern Europe situation many of us my age sat back and wondered how long the Bear could be caged. With the Putin regime came the answer, he snowed Bush into believing he was pro Democracy yet every part of his background showed him to be a diehard Communist.
This last week has finally showed where his place in history will be recorded. Putin is another in a line of Russian leaders who dominated the 50’s and 60’s with sweet talk for the media and a real contempt for the American way of life. Are we going to have another terrible decade or two with the constant threat of nuclear war or is this just an isolated venture to see how we react. Only time will tell but how we react to this situation will play a major role in what happens next. For all of our sakes Bush, please don’t blink.
For those of you who have never experience dialog with the Russians don’t be fooled by what they say only be ever aware of their actions. To a true Communist lying is just a means to an end and he will camouflage his real intentions with a smile. Don’t just take my word for these things they have been written in the history of Eastern Europe.
And that’s my opinion,
