For many years now I have tried to understand the reason for hyphenated ancestry. I guess according to the rule I should tell everyone that I am a Swedish-American. What I don’t understand is what is the difference between a Swedish-American and just an American? To me an American is an American not a Mexican-American, a Chinese-American or an African-American. Are we supposed to treat people differently if they have a hyphenation in their ancestry? I understand the natural pride in heritage as I was a Swede raised in an dominately Italian neighborhood in the south end of Seattle. If I would have called one of them an Italian-American I would have gotten my butt kicked. These were first class Americans and considered themselves Americans not anything else. I don’t know how it got started in the first place but I truely feel it has done more to isolate the Black community from all the rest of America than was done by the segregationist in the south.

I have a very good friend who was born and raised in Hawaii, since she was born prior to Hawaii becoming a State should I refer to her as a Hawaiian-American? I think not, she’d probably shoot me. She and her friends in the Islands are as much or more of an American than most as they lived through the terrible days of the Pearl Harbor attack and their families worked diligently in the rebuilding that followed. In my humble opinion adding a hyphen to ones heritage just isolates them from the rest of us. When my Grandfather was alive he used to preach to all of us that we were to be proud of our heritage but that we were Americans first and foremost. He even went so far as to make all of his children speak only English in the house. I don’t recall either my Grandfather or my Grandmother speaking Swedish other than a prayer that they lead us in at mealtime or when they were angry and didn't want us to know it.

I am not a racist as I am sure I will be called for these comments, it is only how I feel about what I consider a harmful situation. If we were all just Americans and all enjoyed the freedoms provided by our country equally, it seems to me that life would be a lot better. To me the only hyphenated American should be the Native-Americans who were here long before we were. Is it not a fact that the most successful of all people are the ones who assimilate into society and work to improve and advance themselves personally rather than those who hang on to the stereotype lifestyle of their heritage? As my father used to say; “ A man is as good as his actions, his color may be different but it’s what’s in his heart that counts.” My dad always used the word Negro when referring to a Black man. It was never with a derogatory tone or meaning, it was as he was taught in school. It was no different than me being called the Swede by the Italians in my neighborhood. It was never meant in a derogatory way it was what I was. Many of my Italian neighbors died in WWII and Korea. They were among the first to sign up to serve. No they weren’t Italian-Americans then either they were first class Americans all the way. Now it's your turn liberals, give it you best shot, as I know you will turn everything I have said into something entirely different.

And that’s my opinion,
Don

You know what Don. You are a racist because you think you're always right and you know you're white. I don't hate you... I feel sorry for you and those like you. You cannot see that your reasoning and your presentation of your absurd assumed superiority is what will eventually cause this land to be invaded. Then all those liberals dieing next to you won't seem so wrong anymore.

When I write thankfully I am not like you, you who believe that what ever you say is the only way. You put words in other peoples mouths just to hear yourself talk. I write what I feel I don't pretend to have all the answers in most cases I am inviting feed back to make judgement on my own beliefs. If because I do not think people should be treated differently it makes me a racist in your eyes so be it, but you my friend with your interpretation of the words and feelings of others have the makings of an egotist, one who likes to sit and pass judgement on the efforts of others.

You end with...

"Now it's your turn liberals, give it you best shot, as I know you will turn everything I have said into something entirely different."

Now you say "I write what I feel and don't pretend to have all the answers."

Which is it? Don't you judge youre own writing. I know I do mine... you find no fault with your "feelings" and rightly so... "feelings" cannot be faulted.

But to say you know your words will be twisted and to end with...

"And that's my opinion"

is a double message at best.

You're reaching for something to find fault with, try writing your own thoughts instead of just criticizing mine. Don

Statueman you're crazy. There is absolutely nothing racist about Don's post. I happen to agree with him 100%, if anyone called me an Argentine-American (which I've personally never heard of btw) I would kick their ass.
Anyone who enjoys the benefits this country offers, is an American, if they don't think they are, then they shouldn't take advantage of Americas benefits. They should go to whatever country it is they love, and live there because all that negative BS is destroying this one.

dasvics has it right, and Don, don't change your thoughts just because Statueman is a little nuts, someone may help him some day. Then hopefully he will be proud to say he is an American. I'm proud of my heritage, on one wall of my living room I have photograph's of my family going back 7 generations some come from Germany France England Ireland and of course Sweden. Oh of course your on the wall also. your cousin Larry from Aberdeen wa.

Uh... I am proud to be an American. I am proud we have a constitution and a bible that discredits those who do not practice what they preach.

I am not proud of conservatives of whom I consider myself one... who demonize folks who don't see things as they do.

I try to put purpose before pride however... and I see no purpose for a blog that lumps blacks and liberals into one nicely packaged brown paper bag.

Did you even read the article? It amazes me how anyone could read that into this article.

Just re read your last paragraph...

Do you re-read your own writing? While I agree that Italian Americans make wonderful soldier guess what? So do those Negro's you spoke of after making this statement.

"Is it not a fact that the most successful of all people are the ones who assimilate into society and work to improve and advance themselves personally rather than those who hang on to the stereotype lifestyle of their heritage?"

You've got us all figured out don't ya? Yeah I'm crazy and this oppressive double talk makes me mad... made me mad as a kid and makes me mad as an adult but I feel just like Ann Frank... you ain't that bad and you ain't no racist. What you are is a man who's sold on the media manic interpretation on the state of black folks in this country. And you preach a string of cliche's like you're eating a box of wheat thins.

You go from personal responsiblity to negros to Italians to liberals and the construction of your writes show the bias not of opinion but rock solid belief in your own thinking.

It's always been my contention that conservatives need to stop shooting good solid causes in the foot by presenting them in such a racist manner. You know from my past statements I don't think you're a racist...

Who the hell made you blog monitor statueman? There is NOTHING wrong with Don's post. It is fair, truthful, and honest. I bet if he was Black you wouldn't be complaining so damn much.
White Americans are the ones being discriminated against. It's getting so bad they can't even express themselves without morons like you talking BLEEP about them. Get a grip. You're confused, not all White people are racist. But you know what is? All those “Hispanic-Latin” or “Black” orgs that help ONLY Hispanic or Black people. That’s RACIST.

And you know what? So what if someone's "biased"? Might as well be, because it's not like anyone else on the planet- isn't! So if all I'm going to get from people is BS and biased opinions, it's nice to read something I agree with.

And fyi statuman, when I spoke up against others- it was because I thought the way they expressed themselves made them sound racist. But that’s just my opinion, I might’ve been wrong about them, either way, Don has never expressed himself in a manner that would even suggest the BS you’re insinuating. What’s more, I admire him for putting up with you and being so respectful when you’ve done nothing but shamelessly insult him. That in itself speaks volumes of the kind of man he is.
You should read that Bible you like to correct me with and take some of your own advice.

OK Dasvics sure... here goes

King Solomons Proverbs 26
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
or you will be like him yourself.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly,
or he will be wise in his own eyes.

Much wiser counsel is to be found here from a much more merciful teacher

Matthew 5
21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
and towards the end of the chapter 5 he asks,
"If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?"
"And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?"
