Ah the beauty of traveling into work at 3:30AM. For the first time in recent memory I didn't encounter one cone, barrel, work crew, detour or ripped up pavement! It was smooth sailing into the O'Neil tunnel, out the expressway, up 128 and onto Route 1. I realize that this is and will be a rare occurrence but it is nice to see what the “future” might hold. Even if I never experience it again.

I would personally like to thank the baseball gods, and Christopher Columbus, for providing us with an early ALCS game. For those of us on the “early” shift, watching the Sox during the playoffs is virtually impossible. So having the 1st pitch shortly after 4 in the afternoon is a treat. Now if they can just get the game over in 9 innings before Timlin is sent to the mound, we'll be in great shape.

If you're like Gene and plan on leaf peeping in the mountains, Cape-bound for a little R & R or just sticking around your neighborhood for the long Columbus Day weekend, enjoy. However, here is a friendly reminder. Even though summer is but a distant memory in the review mirror – the traffic problems may not be. Plan your routes and the times that you travel. It could make that holiday a bit more pleasurable.

No it's not what you're thinking ... this flashing involves safety (but I think the title was a clever way for you to check out this blog).

This is a lesson I learned from my dad long ago and thought I'd pass it along. As it is, big rig driver's peripheral vision is restricted due to the length of the trailers – especially at night. So if you come across a tractor trailer on the highway and notice a turn signal indicating his/her request for a lane change here is what you should do. If there is room ... and you want to let the truck driver know it's OK for them to slide over into your lane ahead of you ... give a quick flash “on and off” of your head lights. This is a friendly heads up to the driver that you're willing to let them slide over into your lane. Believe me, the big rig driver will appreciate the gesture. You will in return receive a flash of the truck's running lights to indicate to you a hardy “thanks” for understanding the peril and difficulties faced by these long haul drivers.

I find this to be a simple way of keeping the roadways a bit safer and perhaps more importantly – a slightly friendlier place to be. Thanks Dad.

The “bumps” I told you about yesterday have all been cleared up. Yes, even though bridge work continues on both sides of the 128N/93S bridge over Rt 37 in Braintree, the menacing mounds now have a freshly smoothed pavement surface. Enjoy the ride.

If you travel from the Braintree split onto 128N (93S) watch out for bridge work at Route 37 in Braintree. There are three huge bumps that if you're going too fast can send you flying!! Warning signs do indicate a bump, but they don't do the hazard justice. Just a friendly heads up to reduce the speed as you approach or you may find yourself in big trouble.

Is it me or does it seem there are fewer bumper stickers supporting his or her candidate in this year's presidential race? Most recently, Bush/Kerry or Clinton/Bush banners seemed to be slapped on every car's rear end that drove on the road. This time around, not so much. I've witnessed only a whisper of McCain stickers and hardly a handful of Obama. Strange, or just a sign of the times?

OK I know, I know. One win in Anaheim a World Series does not make. However, just thinking ahead – in the event that the Sox pull off another championship how about we keep our heads. No need to have you knuckleheads who feel it's so imperative to take to the streets in a massive mob to celebrate. I've been flying over you yahoos way too many times over the last few years. Sure, it's nice to bask in the glory, but perhaps showing a little bit of class and restraint, if not for anything else, is the safest way to go.

Go Sox!

Just wanted to give folks the heads up. In the town of Marlborough, the kids at the Kane Elementary walk to school every Wednesday. And October 8th, the rest of the country is joining in with “National Walk to School Day.” So if you're out driving around during the hours between 7AM and 9AM, just look out for the little ones.

Ya, I know it's supposed to be a soaking wet weekend, but I say find that silver lining behind all of those gray clouds, explore that hidden restaurant you always wanted to try – or even take a ride to the beach and watch the wonder of mother nature. Off-season on the Cape is always on the top of my list. Dogging the rain drops to find a fun place to hunker down is always a great way to ride out the storm.

Flying around I sometimes come across farms with mazes created in the maze. Cornfields are transformed into works of art that can only be appreciated from a vantage point provided by Skyfox. Could any of you farm artists fill me in on how you make it happen? Here's the video:

Sure, everybody thinks about the island in the summer. But the fall is just as beautiful. Fewer crowds, September temperatures, an even more relaxed atmosphere. If you have the opportunity to go – jump on it. If you're thinking about a weekend getaway – this is the perfect spot, one of my favorites in the world and close. Win - win!!

For those of you walkers out there who feel you have the “right” to walk when you want -- whenever you want -- take a look at the signs.

Yesterday, while taking a right from Dartmouth onto Boylston, some smug young woman with the attitude of “this is my world and you're just living in it” decided that a 'red hand' sign for cross walkers was meant for someone else. She proceeded to stroll across the intersection as if she was all alone on a beach. Then when someone gave her a toot of the horn to let her know she was holding up traffic flow she gave the driver the “how dare you” stare. As if to say “I'm a walker and I don't care, you will wait for me as I take my leisurely stroll.” Well guess what? You can take your your strolling attitude and ...

Have a nice day.

FYI for all you bikers out there... watch out for the uneven pavement.

Those cold crisp fall days ahead are great for that weekend ride but here is a friendly heads up. Lots of the highways (including X-way north and south, Mass Pike and 495) are experiencing repaving work. If you don't plan your route right, it could be cause for concern.

Have a great and safe trip.

For those of you who use the X-way I know it's been of a bumpy ride. Road repairs and paving work have been going on for what seems like an eternity. However I think the wait will be worth it. A completely resurfaced 93 North and South will be a treat – especially come winter and the following spring.

I hope this will help with an annual right of spring – when pot holes blossom. So for now hold tight, a smooth ride is looming.
