And the winner is..... David Cook!

After months of rehearsals, interviews, photo shoots, singing and dancing you have a new American Idol - and he couldn't be a nicer guy.
Only hours after the confetti fell and the crowds of adoring fans had gone home David joined me for his first interview of the morning. For a guy who hadn't gone to bed yet he couldn't be more gracious.

He told me he had actually set himself up to lose to David "Archie" Archulleta but that wouldn't be the case.

With almost 100-million votes cast and a margin of 56% to 44% America had spoken... David saying it has been a thrilling ride but he has been humbled by the entire experience.

Now it's on the road for the Idol tour... a record deal and even more media interviews. If he thought the last few months we busy... the work has only just begun.

Congratulations David Cook - you deserve to be called the new "American Idol!"

David Cook totally deserves the title "American Idol." I have been rooting for him for the past month. After Simon's comments on Tuesday it didn't seem like hew would be the winner, maybe it made people vote more for him, I know I voted a few times. I'm glad he emerged victorious. He seems like such a nice guy.

I knew he would be the winner,he's original and very talented. I do however feel bad for the other David.

So glad that David Cook won!!! Voted for him since the beginning, he has a terrific voice.
Nice to look at too!
After Simmons comments on Tuesdays show, wasn't so sure he was gonna make it. BUT, that just made me vote more....re-dial!!!! :)

I think he was deserving but would have liked to have seen Carly in the finale also.
