The closing of Guantanamo Bay detention center and using the Army Field Manual as the basis for all interrogation is aimed at protecting Americans, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday.

In his first press conference since President Obama was inaugurated, Gibbs said the orders "made America safer, made America stronger."

"The president believes that there's no more important job that he has than to keep the American people safe," Gibbs said at the White House press briefing room.

"The president believes that what he did today will enhance the security of the American people, that it lives up to our values as Americans, and that it will protect the men and women that we have in uniform," he said.

Earlier in the day, Obama signed three executive orders and one presidential directive that mandate that interrogation techniques in the Army Field Manual be used by all intelligence and law enforcement services; call for a task force to look at closing the detention center in Guantanamo Bay within the year; and order a strategy to be developed for handling detainees in the future. The presidential directive also orders a stay in the case of Ali Al-Marri, the only person being held by the military as an enemy combatant on U.S. soil.

Republicans say they are concerned that the decision will mean terrorist detainees will be brought to the U.S.  

"If a terrorist detainee is brought to the United States that terrorist is automatically afforded more constitutional rights than U.S. military personnel under the Uniform Code of Military Justice," said House Minority Leader John Boehner. That only increases the threat that a judge will release the detainee into the U.S. population. 

"Republicans want to work with our president to address these national security concerns, but we should not gamble with the safety and security of the American people and our troops on the battlefield," he said.

But Gibbs said Obama consulted with several generals and flag officers involved in keeping the country safe before he made the decision to issue the orders.

"We've made our security stronger, we've done it in consultation with, as I said, members of current government, people that have been outside of government, people that have been involved in these decisions," he said.

"There are certainly going to be people that are going to come at this from one angle. I think there are also a number of people that will come at it from the angle that the steps that were taken today ensure and enhance the security of the American people," Gibbs continued.

Gibbs said that Obama was expected to make news during a trip to the State Department Thursday afternoon but didn't want to precede him with the reveal. Later, Obama named Clinton Amb. Richard Holbrooke as a special emissary to Pakistan and Afghanistan and to appoint former Sen. George Mitchell as a special envoy to the Middle East.

As for the economy -- another immediate and critical issue facing the president, who is going to be receiving daily economic briefings following his national security briefings each morning -- Gibbs said the president was pleased that the Finance Committee voted out Tim Geithner to head the Department of Treasury.

Geithner, president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank, and economic adviser Larry Summers have been helping Obama with the guidelines for spending the second half of a Troubled Assets Relief Program inherited by President Bush. 

On Thursday, in a purely symbolic vote, the House disapproved the release of the second half of the $700 billion package. The vote opposing the release had no force of law, however, because only one chamber in the Congress had to approve it and the Senate already did so

Gibbs said the president is working with his advisers on principles to ensure transparency, including limiting executive compensation, and making sure that the money given to financial institutions gets to the American people. 

"Larger decisions on how exactly to use that money going forward are part of an ongoing process that the economic team is formulating so that the president can make some decisions on," he said.

On a separate matter, Gibbs said the president took the oath of office again "out of an abundance of caution."

The 35-word oath was mangled during the inaugural ceremony on Tuesday in part because Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts misplaced the word "faithfully" while administering the oath. The oath is written into the U.S. Constitution.

The White House counsel did not believe a problem with the validity of Obama's presidency had emerged as a result of the flub, but decided to do it once more just to be on the safe side.

"The counsel's office believed strongly throughout the day that the president had been sworn in appropriately and effectively. Discussion later in the afternoon regarding the misplacement of a word and, because of that, and out of an abundance of caution, Chief Justice Roberts came last night to re-administer the oath," Gibbs said.

Gibbs noted that twice before in history -- Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Chester Arthur -- the oath had been re-administered for similar reasons. 

He said the executive orders signed by Obama before the second oath were not signed a second time.

As to getting used to living in the White House, Gibbs said Obama is enjoying "living above the company store." He said Obama is still trying to find the lay of the land, and at one point on Wednesday had to ask where to go next.

"It's a pretty big house," he said.

He added that the president is going to retain a security-enhanced BlackBerry that will allow him to stay in touch with senior staff and personal friends on a limited use.

"They are all subject to the Presidential Records Act. There are, as you know, some narrow exemptions in the presidential records act to afford some personal communications," he said.

VB & Morning News Question:  Are You Sick Of The Inauguration Hype? Yes! but with questions about the historical meaning.

Being a child of the 60's an yount teen in the midst of the "Civil Rights" movement an whole "Counter Culture" movement an "Anti War" Movement. I'm perplexed by everyone's disregard of  Barack Obama's mother "white" in the whole mix of his bi-racial makeup as a person a human being because Barracks bi-racial mix an his mothers decision was proof of what we all were working for in the 60's breaking down the barrier of racial divide in the country an treating everyone as equals.....Barack Obama was part of the solution that most seem to be forgetting his mother as a white women entering in a marriage with a African male.........can you or we not celebrate that whole amazing meaning of this moment that 2 races created Barack Obama? isn't that what the whole racial equality and divide was about? the biggest hurdle or barrier to leap for all races an genders.....because he is Bi-Racial which leads to perfect harmony and wasn't that one of the biggest goals in our countries history to break down the wall of of division?  and  for humans to treat each other as equals...I don't see this happening as we watch this upcoming inaugural people are forgetting about the beauty in the mix of Banks make up an life.......I could bring up what i heard amongst my african american friends in my teenage years and even in my rock band an the black family I lived with an how they viewed a black man with a white women an off springs as Oreos to be used in a hateful and sometimes jokingly way by them.....but really wasn't that part of our goal as a country?

The glass shattered as State Police say 22-year-old Darrel Brown opened fire on a trooper car. The glass on the windshield of the cop car spidered and about a half dozen bullets pierced the front windshield.

Major William Sprague said, "This incident quickly went from a routine traffic stop into a police officers nightmare."

That was just the beginning of the shootout on I-90 in East Greenbush on Saturday. It all began when a trooper pulled over the cab for speeding. Investigators then say that Brown, who hired the cab to take him from Hartford to Albany, pulled a semi-automatic version of an AK-47 out of a duffle bag. But it took several minutes for him to fire, leading police to believe the gun had a lock on it. That allowed the trooper to escape with the cab driver.

Maj. Sprague said, "There was a matter of three or four minutes by the time the trooper and the cab driver retreat to the time the first gunshot takes out the rear windshield of the taxicab and he takes the first shot at the troop car."

Luckily no one was inside. But then Brown starting firing outside the car, terrifying drivers. In all he fired at least 28 shots towards police and drivers hitting at least two cars. Six members of the State Police and one officer from East Greenbush returned fire 33 times. Brown was hit a number of times but the disabling shot came from a State Police marksman.

Maj. Sprague said, "There is some indication that during the shooting incident during the shooting incident that he began to yell shoot me, kill me."

It's unclear if suicide by cop was the motive and why Brown, who has been arrested before in Connecticut, took a cab to the region Saturday. Police say that Brown did have to reload once and had more ammo left.

Maj. Sprague said, "We recovered an additional live round chambered in the weapon and an additional 15 rounds in the clip."

State Police along with the D.A. are reviewing the actions of the officers. Darrel Brown was shot in the head and is not expected to survive which means police may never know why Brown came to the Albany area.

The cab driver didn't know Brown had a gun. He cooperated with police and did not get a ticket for speeding.

The intrepid Paul Williams has a report in Canada Free Press (thanks to all who sent this in) about his visit to Islamberg, New York, a camp run by the jihadist Jamaat ul-Fuqra group. The inhabitants wouldn't let him into the compound, but he talked to some of the locals, and found out a good deal:

Islamberg is not as benign as a Buddhist monastery or a Carmelite convent. Nearly every weekend, neighbors hear sounds of gunfire. Some, including a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, have heard the bang of small explosives. None of the neighbors wished to be identified for fear of "retaliation." "We don't even dare to slow down when we drive by," one resident said. "They own the mountain and they know it and there is nothing we can do about it but move, and we can't even do that. Who wants to buy a property near that?"

The complex serves to scare the bejeezus out of the local residents. "If you go there, you better wear body armor," a customer at the Circle E Diner in Hancock said. "They have armed guards and if they shoot you, nobody will find your body."

At Cousins, a watering hole in nearby Deposit, a barfly, who didn't wish to be identified, said: "The place is dangerous. You can hear gunfire up there. I can't understand why the FBI won't shut it down."

Islamberg is a branch of Muslims of the Americas Inc., a tax-exempt organization formed in 1980 by Pakistani cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani, who refers to himself as "the sixth Sultan Ul Fuqra," Gilani, has been directly linked by court documents to Jamaat ul-Fuqra or "community of the impoverished," an organization that seeks to "purify" Islam through violence.

Though primarily based in Lahore, Pakistan, Jamaat ul-Fuqra has operational headquarters in New York and openly recruits through various social service organizations in the U.S., including the prison system. Members live in hamaats or compounds, such as Islamberg, where they agree to abide by the laws of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, which are considered to be above local, state and federal authority. Additional hamaats have been established in Hyattsville, Maryland; Red House, Virginia; Falls Church, Virginia; Macon, Georgia; York, South Carolina; Dover, Tennessee; Buena Vista, Colorado; Talihina, Oklahoma; Tulane Country, California; Commerce, California; and Onalaska, Washington. Others are being built, including an expansive facility in Sherman, Pennsylvania.

VB, The only thing right now that is saving this economy is the recent lowering of the gas prices for the working men and women of this country.....maybe you can afford it but I surely an not! once the price of gas came down allowed me to start believing i had some extra cash to but things that were not needs but wants....the lower gas prices freed me to buy or go out into the public business sector to spend! Obesity? Are they all Stoned Up at the State House? if they were truly serious about taking care of Obesity they would have never! passed the legalization of Pot/ Marijuana. And this is how i got there! everyone knows when you smoke Pot you get the MUNCHIES! an you'll eat every known JUNK FOOD in sight so how can they be truly serious about obesity? then they should never allowed the legalization of Pot.

Me an my friends in the late 60's an early 70's personally kept MICKEY D'S  afloat with our Lunch habits daily after getting stoned! in Coolidge Corner Brookline and STORE 24 at all hours of the morning.

Another point just recently that just happened to me at my child's Physical.....they asked in the examination room on their new tracking device a desk top computer these Questions.

Do you smoke in your home? Do you Smoke in your Car? do you own a Gun? do keep the Gun locked up?

"things they maybe should of asked: Do you smoke pot while driving? do smoke POT in your home in front of your children?  do eat obsessively after smoking POT?  do mix POT with Alcohol.....are you afraid of what second hand smoke of POT an what it does to your child?" do you want your child to suffer from the effects of second hand POT SMOKE? like getting stoned! or lung  cancer? and never mind about the whole gun issue an being stoned an forgetting you chambered a round in the gun an forgetting about it...how most guns accidents are caused in auto pistols...becuase your stoned.

First its none of your god damn business! its a 5th amendment issue an a civil liberty issue! but even more perpostorous was they didn't ask me Do i smoke POT in my home? or in my Car? the hypocrisy of this State of Massachusetts and "liberal social doo gooders" by the  the Great Boston City Councilor Dapper O'Niell and would also follow up with the line "bless their hearts" I have come to one conclusion this State an its people are Stoned! and have consumed to many drugs an alcohol since the 60's an 70's that their judgment is impaired an they can not make a normal decision or come up with a honest solution to anything they pass into law or in the area of social engineering....

I had to give the child Physician a little lesson in what this state did with passing the new POT LAW since they wanted to know if I smoked? and owned a gun? first by passing this new decriminalization of POT they now have excluded people who once couldn't get a LTC a License to Carry a gun with a pot arrest you were permanently prohibited from getting a a hand gun! forever! an you would have to wait FIVE YEARS for a F.I.D. if waived by the local Chief of Police now with the Decriminalization of POT its not a reason for not being able to own a hand gun or a five year waiting period for a long gun.

I also brought up the Physician that "the A.M.A. is anti gun" an has years before signed onto anti gun bans an bills yet this is the same A.M.A. who who protect Mental Patients an their records with things like H.I.P.P.A. etc and leave no options for law enforcement to stop mentally deranged people from getting their hands on guns an automatic weapons who committed carnage on unsuspecting children in schools an an restaurants....the  A.M.A. is clearly not consistent to their own stances on protecting the innocent an stopping gun violence by protecting deranged mental patients with H.I.P.P.A. and other devices they use to protect the patients psychological records....and what they Psychiatric drugs they are on.....

Bottom Line to all of this I believe our state house representatives better a take a good look into the mirror every morning naked of course an to get a honest evaluation of their own obesity they should be wearing a brown paper bag over their head to get  truly honest evaluation of their own bodies before they start pointing a finger at who is obese! mentally an phiscially an economically!.....maybe we should take their pay raises away so they don't go to the fanciest dinning establishments and lets say expose their personal gluttony! a matter of fact maybe they all need to review the "seven sins" from what i  have been seeing in the news.

Paintball drive-bye's: hang the culprits? LOL!!!!!!

As I watched the FOX25 report and interviews about what they should do to the culprits of these drive-bye shootings by paintball guns....I had to laugh....with people saying they should be put away for a long time? or as one old coot said hang them? an the fox25 reporter replied hang them? he repeated it "hang them!" why I laughed about their views on the punishment...this is the same state where most liberals want 1- GITMO shut down......an prisoner's released in our society because no other country will take them.....this is also the state where liberals ...feel number 2 - that Israel after taking 3,000 rockets from Hamas a terrorist organization backed by Hezbollah feels that Israel is over reacting? that the ends don't justify the means by the Israeli Army an Air Force.....I would love to see Buffalo New York take 3,000 rockets from over the Canadian border lets say from Toronto where there is a heavy enclave of Muslims an documented arrest of Al Qaeda members an founders son..an see what our reaction would be?
