I really don't get all excited about this stupid show (American Idol) even though (because of my wife) I never miss it.  Honestly, I'd rather be watching Globe Trekker on PBS; or reading my new book of Emily Dickinson's ethereal, sublime poetry.  If that sounds lame to you, well Emily wrote a little something about you when she said in one of her many works; "Much madness is divinest sense - To a discerning eye - Much sense - the starkest madness..."

But - believe it or not - there's something very profound about American Idol; if you'd just hear me out.

This show has been on for seven seasons.  So, you would think that after seven seasons that everyone involved would fully understand that if you are to avoid mocking only outdone by the majority of the crowd at the tenement of Golgotha on the day Christ was crucified, that you have to be more than able to sing; you actually have to be good...well...most of the time.  But if you are a Sanjaya, you may wind up wishing that you never received one of those highly sought-after "golden tickets", as the mocking on that end becomes much more widespread and memorable.

But clearly, while many American Idol contestants may have 'received the memo' about how it all goes down when you stand in front of the 'Sanhedrin of singers', they're obviously either in some unparalleled denial about their lack of talent, or they are just plain masochistic.

But I can't help but wonder, just how many people (like the clueless contestants of American Idol) are there in the world?  Frankly, the flood of - in essence - retarded people out there never ceases to amaze me.  How on earth does this society even function with so many of these people being a part of it?  You may think that I'm being sardonic, surly, or that I'm trying to be "funny", but actually I'm being quite serious.  Before I started watching American Idol, I never really knew the degree of stupidity of so many, and really...it astonishes me.  Just what in the heck do all of these people do with themselves?  How do they function?  How did they get that way?

I recall one contestant - one of the absolute worst - say (quite sadly) that his father has long told him (quite seriously) that he "hates" him.  This was a very damaged individual.  He carried his baggage around with him, and I felt terrible for the guy.  The editing of the show and the whole vibe set a tone of "ha-ha...look at this loser", but I wasn't laughing.  He sung Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" like you would imagine a person who just woke up from a coma after having a lobotomy might.  His countenance was so heavy, and it was absolutely ugly - not funny.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to come off like a sanctimonious prig.  I laughed at some of the God-awful singing.  But I wasn't laughing at the person behind the singing - only the hilarious sounds that some of them make.

But so many people just delight in how gauche the majority of American Idol contestants are.  I don't.  When you really think about it, it's no laughing matter.  What we're seeing on this show is a sick society, and I'm not just talking about the symptoms exhibited by so many of the contestants; but those who get their own perverse little self-esteem boost by exalting themselves over the many 'jesters' that go before the triumvirate of Randy, Paula, and Simon.  I think I get my own little De facto self-esteem boost by the realization that I am not on either side.  ...Thank God...

Graham, while I don't watch the show, I do have to ask: How many of these people are acting clueless as to how bad they really are in the hopes of being another William Hung? In all seriousness, it seems like these folks have been trying out in increasing numbers since that particular season. (And no, no one's going to talk me into watching it. It's just not my thing.)

Xan,

Trust me...these people aren't "acting". You'd have to see them. They wear their insecurities on their sleeve, and if Meryl Streep had the role of a stupid person she would surely fall way short of these people. Anyone out there who's been watching the show (and wouldn't make a great bowling partner with one of these people themselves) knows what I'm talking about. It's really mind-blowing (to me).

Dave....this and the final week are the only segments I watch of Idol. I agree that it does amaze me that there are so many sad and clueless individuals out there.
However, I think the produces know EXACTLY who make it on the air and those that do not.
They need to get that "watercooler" buzz out there.
Already they have that guy that sang the "You are my brother".....my girls have been singing it since it aired. And mind you the sing it just as off key as he did ! YIKES ! ( Even the cat runs and hides.)
Bottom line it is Entertainment, good or bad. No matter how " retarded " the individuals are, they are there for the sole purpose of ratings which in the end equal $$$$$$$$$.

When watching this show, and I do find it very entertaining, in the back of my mind I say "gee, are some of these people deaf?" Did you know if you have a hearing problem, you may not be aware of how bad you really sound? Of course that doesn't excuse the fact that you should have had someone else give you THEIR opinion, before you went on live TV.
People so down on the show, really have NO sense of humor...it's all in fun, and they really have produced some very talented people.

Dave, you just proved to me what a POMPOUS ASS you are. If you would prefer to be watching Globe Trekker on PBS why don't you. In this day and age you are not going to tell me you only have one TV in your house. I have a nice 12" Color set sitting on the bottom of my closet doing nothing that you are welcome to. Do you live with your family in a 1 room flat. Can't you go to another room to read your new Emily Dickinson book. If I was that turned off by a show I certainly wouldn't watch it. It almost sounds as retarded as what you refer to some of the contestants as. Which by the way if you can't see some of those people doing this just for the fun of it then you are really more closed minded than I thought. Like I wrote in my Blog, I tape the show, which enables me to watch it when I want and pass the things I don't want to see. By the way Globe Trekker is one of my favorite shows. Luckily PBS repeats things a million times. Lighten Up a little Dave, have a little fun with it......

Hey fenwaydav, maybe he watches it with his wife because she asks him to. I've asked hubby to watch things with me he wouldn't normally watch and I've watched stuff with him I wasn't really interested in. On WZLX yesterday they had a girl from around here that's tried out. She said that by the time singers get to the judges they've already had to sing three or four times for producers, etc. so it is all staged. You can almost tell when they start following someone around with a camera that they're probably going to be terrible. The more they praise themselves the more I realize that they're probably going to stink. But, it is very entertaining. I don't watch much tv but my youngest son got me hooked a few years back when he used to ask me to watch it with his girlfriend and him. Now neither one of them watch it, but I do. By the way, Ayla Brown is going to be in a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I think it's going to be with the Reagle Players in Waltham but I could be mistaken.

Hi Jonsmom, What you say may be true about watching something because your spouse ask you to. But come on if you were tortured by it or visa versa with that request still be made. Of course that is staged. I didn't think the judges are going to sit through the hundreds of thousands of people that fill those stadiums. The producers pick the cream of the crop..both good and bad. I didn't watch it the first couple of seasons. Then only during auditions. that lead to where I am today. I want to see how good my predictions are.

Wow. I'm way more astounded by how misunderstood my blog is than I am by anything I've seen on American Idol.
Thank you, jonsmom, for being a voice of reason in the midst of all of this paranoid twaddle.
I guess I wrote something which is subject to the perspective of the reader. I think it might have helped if I didn't have to cut it short. I really didn't get a chance to explain myself clearer. Suffice to say that some of you read waaaay too much into my criticism of the show. The focus was supposed to be on the contestants and what they say about our societal ills -- not a scathing condemnation towards the show itself.
Even though jonsmom is right -- that I watch mostly to be with my wife -- I still watch the show when I'm not FORCED for cryin' out loud.
But whatever you need to say about me to make you feel better about yourself, fenway...(shrugs)

Did you guys just skip over it when I said,

"Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to come off like a sanctimonious prig. I laughed at some of the God-awful singing. But I wasn't laughing at the person behind the singing - only the hilarious sounds that some of them make."

I am entertained by the show - however stupid it may be. I just feel really sorry for the damaged individuals who are being exploited for our amusement. But as usual, whenever I express mercy for people on myfoxboston, I get a barrage of insults; which is an apt addendum in itself to this blog.

As someone who doesn't watch the show, Graham, I'll have to take you at your word that they're not clueless. And agree with jonsmom that if people are THAT bad, some of them have to be tone deaf. And, if the producers are staging this, I'd actually tune in to an episode where THEY (the producers) were forced to audition in front of the people who get really ridiculed by the judges. A little turnabout might change things a bit.

I figured the judges didn't sit through all the people that showed up too dav. But I was surprised to find out that contestants had to audition three or four times before getting in front of the judges. I figured maybe once and you're out.

YIKES!!!! I just read all the comments after I posted here. I want to clarify that I don't think ALL the people are emotionally challenged, but I do believe it of ALL the folks with horrible voices. Cuz being made fun of by America is not something anyone does just for "fun." Especially when they have a voice only a mother could love!! ;)

I think the producers of American Idol should be ashamed of themselves. You're right Graham, the "vocally challenged" contestants on Idol are being horribly exploited. Imagine showing up to an audition of American Idol, and you audition 3 perhaps four times infront of various individuals. After each audition you gain more and more confidence in your "ability" to sing, so that by the time you get to the big three you may be nervous, but confident in your ability to belt out a tune. Then you step in front of Paula, Simon, and Randy, and here it is your shot at the big time. So you sing whatever song you have selected, and you sing it terribly, but you don't know that because you've been making it through the auditions. How soul crushing must it be to hear Simon fire off some terrible insult, and have all three judges reject you completely? This is a terrible show because it gives people a false hope that they have a chance to become a superstar, and then exploits their lack of talent for entertainment. That we as a society are entertained by that speaks terribly of us.

GC, I understand where your coming from; this show give us a peek at a slice of society in this Country and makes us aware of how many strange, unstable and mentally defective people there are in our midsts. And, not only that, but how the media is more than happy to exploit these people.
American Idol is not the first to do it, of course, Barnum made it his life's work by using the 'oddities' to entertain others...to a greater extreme, of course. Most of us get some kind of satisfaction from witnessing the antics or physical 'imperfections' of others that we as a whole deem to be 'odd'.
I believe we have a growing number of people that are mentally 'challenged' (to be PC) and how much is caused from an increase in birth defects or caused from other sources, such as drugs, is probably not known statistically. But, we do know that our hospitals and services are lacking because of over-crowding, so we see more and more 'strange' people walking the streets...and now on our TV's.
As far as who gets on the show goes, when you have thousands of people, I'm sure they have more than one studio set up for auditions...and Simon and his side-kicks aren't going to be present. They, I'm sure, get the final picks to audition and they are the only ones filmed....bad or good. The show is really two parts; one for entertainment and one for serious consideration. I think we all have to laugh or be amused by some of the 'singers', but deep down we have to admit some of them are pretty sad.
