What do you think of the stunning choice of Alaska Gov. Palin to be McCain's running mate?

I had a conversation with Dan Rather at the airport (see photo) and I told him I thought Palin could be brilliant or the worst Alaska disaster since the Exxon Valdez.

He actually agreed, and said the only problem with Palin is she might be totally unqualified. Palin's plus sides are obvious - she has potential of stealing away from Hillary supporters and she is a favorite with conservatives and not a Washington insider.

On the other hand, no one knows her or how we'll she'll do as a campaigner. Remember Dan Quayle? - young, good looking and inexperienced and turned out he wasn't the brightest guy around.

Nothing to indicate Palin will be a Quayle but this is definitely a risky move on McCain's part.

Let me know what you think!

Jane Swift is more qualified than Gov. Palin to be Vice-President.

Interesting that the liberal media wants to explore the qualifications of the GOP #2. Where were they when Obama announced his candidacy? Seems like the questions being asked of Palin now are fair, too bad that the media was derelict in their duty to properly vet Obama.
It is a risky pick, but unlike Obama, she actually has a resume with accomplishments rather than rhetoric. As for being unqualified, I think that better describes Rather and the rest of his liberal nuts in the media.

Inexperienced? No more so than Barry Obama. He has only been a United States Senator for 4 years, 2 of which he has been campaigning for President.
Her speech today was good. She seems to be articulate and smart. Honestly if there has to be inexperience somewhere I would rather it be the second person on the ticket and not the first. What I like about this pick is that McCain, ever the maverick went outside Washington. True change! The country certainly doesn't need TWO SENATORS on the ticket.

Sarah Palin is no Dan Quayle. She's not stupid, she's eloquent and a very inspirational speaker, very conservative, stands for all of the right things, and yes...GORGEOUS.

Sarah is called " the Barracuda" in her home state. She can hold her own as many Lobbyist and "good old boys" have found out. Wait until the 1st debate between Sarah and Joe, this is going to be a pit bull fight.
As for quals, give me a break, we have had Peanut Farmer for President, never mind VP.

Time will certainly tell if this was a wise move or not, but I certainly know one thing, she will take many Hillary votes to the McCain side, as well as Union and Hunters etc.and there are over 1,000,000 DS children in this country, guess who they may be voting for?

Joe,I can see it now-the democrats will have buttons, placards and stickers saying one of two things-"Sarah who" or "Who is the hell is sarah Palin?"I am an big mccain supporter and am thrilled he wasnt stupid enough to pick mitt romney which would have been an total disaster.Mccain made this pick to not only appeal to female voters but those Hillaryites still pissed off their girl didnt get picked as Obamas running mate.let the fun begin. We're in for one hell of a ride the next 4 monthes or so

To those who like to assume a woman supporter will support any woman: I'm a Hillary vote, and I, under no Palin circumstances, will be brought to the McCain side. (Stay away from the dark side even if they have cookies) =)

This being said, I think Palin was exactly the move McCain needed to make. Of course it's risky, but that's what the American people like. The Republican party was falling behind the Dems horrendously in the general hope/change/excitement area of this election. Palin will play a key role in adding some life to the McCain campaign. She's the perfect running mate for him: good-looking female, conservative, super gun supporter... what's not to like?

(Oh and forget that whole experience thing. It's not really that important... at least not anymore, right republicans?)

ReneeSB4, is your arguement that because Palin has a light resume for the GOP's #2 that I am wrong to question Obama's credentials for President?

Have you seen the attacks on her from the media? On CNN, Jack Cafferty called her nomination "rediculous" and a "joke". She has been mocked on MSNBC, by the likes of Olberman and Matthews. The arguement has been made that her National Security Experience is very weak...sound like someone we know? I will take an elected official over a "community organizer" any day. Where do I get an application to become a community organizer anyway?

Devil_Patrick: If memory serves me right, the republicans have been shoving the "lack of experience" argument down the throats of Americans since Obama became the projected Democratic candidate. You seem to be surprised, even a bit offended by similar comments Palin is now getting. Do YOU think it's wrong for fed-up Obama supporters to give you a taste of your own medicine?

Alright enough of this, let's put emotions and beliefs aside for a moment a think about this logically. No potential candidate or running mate in this election has had the experience of being president. Therefore, it gets a bit silly to bring this into argument. Also, let's take a look at experience. George W. Bush had a good 4 years of it in 2004 when he was elected. In retrospect, I'm sure we can all agree it didn't seem to help him much.
The teams are now at Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin. If everyone could just agree that each party is lacking in the oh-so-important experience area, then we could put it aside and focus on the real issues. That is, if the republicans have anything else to play besides the experience card.

(And I know your argument must include that Plain is merely the #2. However, if John McCain is elected he would be the oldest person ever inaugurated as president. He's also had issues with very serious forms of cancer. You must always be ready for the #2 becoming the #1, and I'd say particularly in this case.)

For someone who always touts putting his country first, John McCain made quite a politically calculated decision. The ONLY reason he picked Palin is because she is a woman, she has virtually identical positions in comparison to Gov. Pawlenty of Minnesota, and Gov. Pawlenty as a boatload more executive experience than she does. I don't blame McCain for picking her, he was never going to get past Barack Obama picking the safe choice of either Pawlenty or Romney, but let there be no doubt that she is an extremist Republican.

You said it Joe. A very risky move. A lot of people are unfamiliar with Palin, including myself. It's up to her to win over voters right now. I think she has a lot on her plate, but so far, I like her. We'll have to see how good she can prove herself in days to come. Should be very interesting.

My first reaction was that it is a good choice.

Now after thinking about it, not sure. Alaska is a big state and there could be skeletons all over it. Bill Clinton came on the scene quickly and it took a bit for him cemetary to open.

Yea, I know I like to work with people whom I have tested and know will watch my back. I am now thinking MacCain listened to his advisors way too much. This is not a good thing, he may listen to them too much with the war.

She just got her passport a year ago. How many times has she even been in the lower 48?

And all I can see is Tina Fey when I look at her.

Clarification,

I said I like Palin, which is true. But do I like her as a VP? So far, no. She looks like McCain's daughter more than she does his running mate. If McCain did do this to grab Hillary voters, then I'm very disapointed. Having said that, I still, will NOT vote for Obama.

C'mon on now Joe, this was brilliant....I mean of course for Barack. McCain is so desperate to kiss butt to all of Hillsie's backers he thinks this pick is going to win them over?! Let's just play that video over and over again from a few months back of her calling Clinton a "whiner" and see how that goes over with her supporters. I'm sure they'll also overlook the fact that she's a gun nut and a radical pro-lifer (even in cases of rape and incest) and vote McCain now just because she's a woman. I guess since the "Obama isn't ready to be President" BS wasn't working for them they decided to find someone with significantly less experience to go on their ticket. A 72 year old with a history of cancer should definitely pick a 44 yr old woman whose biggest political achievement up until 2 yrs ago was being Mayor to a backwoods town of less than 10,000. At least she worked on her croneyism while in that office, prerequisite for any serious Republican. Yeah I can see the Miss Alaska runner up staring down Putin, Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-Il with her little sash on. If you're going to pander to women Johnny Mac maybe someone like Whitman (who at least has the economic experience you admitted you lack) or Hutchinson would have been better choices. Good job of vetting GOP! At least she's moderately hot, so thank you for that Gramps. Watching Biden rip her apart like a pit bull tearing into a poodle at the debate won't be pretty.

Nice rant BTU, I think your viewpoint is exactly why McCain selected her. I am not sure why you would denigrate this fine woman the way you did, but that seems typical for the far left. Once the media and the moon-bats get done trying to destroy her, she will be a sympathetic figure to the most powerful voting block in the land.

Democrats just can't help themselves. Their hatred for Bush blinds them. Your side should be crushing McCain, it shouldn't even be close, but Obama blinked when he selected Biden. So much for the change theme, huh? I know that the Palin selection was political, but it was also bold and brilliant. With the pick McCain has energized the base, augmented his Maverick theme, and put forth a compelling change ticket.

First of all, Dan Rather would of rather have the typical choice for VP...now he actually has do some work in finding out who Gov. Palin is.
Of course, we all know the mainstream media will find whatever they can on Gov. Palin to make her look bad...after all, they have given Sen. McCain their version of the "Dear John" letter.

Devil Patrick:

I agree she is a fine woman and I like what I see so far. One thing is for sure, she holds a gun better than Kerry. Anyone who can hold their own on a fishing boat is ok with me.

She speaks well, and we all have to start somewhere.
Being the mother of 5 is tough enough. Being VP could be a walk in the park compared to this.
We need to give her a chance.

BTU,

Let me point out that Palin is 4 years younger than Obama and she has MORE experience.

People, don't forget about Obama's laundry list of not-so-nice friends. That's putting it beyond mildly.
