John McCain's decision to curtail his party's convention activities until Gustav passes over raises an interesting question: Do we really need conventions at all?

Obviously Ted Kennedy's appearance was emotional and electrifying for delegates, and Obama had a good convention speech, which gave him a bump. And McCain should have a chance to present his case.

But all the goofy hats and corporate parties and self congratulatory shmoozefests? I think voters could do without those (ok maybe the goofy hats are fun). Maybe we should turn all conventions into a chance for delegates and party officials to help those in need - not just when a disaster strikes.

But wait a minute - that would deny me a chance to make fun of the conventions. On second thought, let's keep things the same. What do you think?

Obcourse ther is no need for conventions. They are a big waste of money. They will never get rid of them, because most campaign financing rules dont apply at the conventions, which allow for larger contributions , and private parties for special interest groups and lobbys.

Currently, we're knee-deep in schlock and other things that won't get past the profanity filters - there's little doubt about that.
But I guess the conventions are somewhat of a necessary pep-rally.
I think that if George W. Bush doesn't get to speak because of Gustav, then Gustav must truly be an act of God - and God is smiling and winking at the republicans.

But Joe....ignore the fact that the Republicans are taking human suffering seriously...then make a joke. Proud of yourself?

Joe:

Tsk, Tsk, Tsk what we need is one primary day and a two month election cycle--how much dirt can you dig? I did not need to know Hillary's pant suit size or most of the crap you reporter types dug up. You and your cohorts become very creative when there is no story --you become the story and most of us are tired of it. Your inquiring minds are producing more rubbish than the National Enquirer--how quickly you forgot:

DEMOCRACY DEPENDS ON JOURNALISM!
(UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVE CNN
