Well, we all thought we could sleepwalk through the first round against the sub .500 Atlanta Hawks, but the Celtics are quickly learning (much like the Pistons have found out) that youth and inexperience can actually play a positive role for a team. We've all heard the same tired old cliches in the sports world, but one that has consistently come up over the last several days is that the Hawks don't know any better. Guess what...I'm starting to believe it!

So what's the problem? Why are the Celtics now heading home for Game 5 all tied at 2?

Last night's game was just all over the place. The Celtics came out on fire building a 16-3 lead, yet the NBA's youngest team was able to weather the storm pretty quickly and ended the first quarter up 29-24. In the third quarter the Celtics we've come to know this year finally reappeared and locked down the Hawks defensively. The Celtics took a 10 point lead into the 4th quarter and Gino was getting ready to dance and give the C's a chance to finish the series back home in five games!

Oops...here comes Joe Johnson and the rest of the the Atlanta Hawks. Al Horford was absolute beast on the glass pulling down 13 boards and when it mattered most the Hawks were able to dominate the offensive boards. Oh let's not forget about Josh Smith and his 7 biocks. The length and athleticism of the Hawks absolutely killed the C's last night. The Celtics rushed easy shots around the basket and even faded away a couple of times and couldn't convert the bunnies let alone the fact let alone the fact that the Hawks made 19 more foul shots than the Celts. Finally old friend Joe Johnson was unstoppable in the 4th quarter posting 20 of his 35 points in the final frame.

The Celtics were supposed to be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA anchored by Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Garnett, but over the last two games the roles have reversed and it's as if the Hawks don't know any better.

With all of that said, the Celtics earned home court advantage during the regular season and now it's time to put it to use. The C's only last 6 home games during the regular season while the Hawks only won 12 away from Philips Arena. The Hawks show tremendous promise for the future, but I believe (and pray) that the C's will come out smoking in Game 5 and won't look back.

Any thoughts?

C's are running into three big problems. First, like you said, c's came out on fire, and at 21-9, I thought the game was over. And so did the refs, who all of a sudden found their whistles on the c's end (they seemed to be lost on the hawks' end). Those bogus, ticky tack calls on pierce and KG early on really kept it close. I do give credit to the Hawks for taking advantage of that opportunity, but the refs in this series (and all the other series) have been so inconsistent.

Another issue which I haven't heard brought up anywhere... the last two-three weeks of the season, when Doc was resting guys up. Obviously, rest is good, but it also leads to rust. When's the last time Eddie House took a 3-pointer under duress? A month ago? And it certainly looked like it last night when he was chucking up bricks.

Third, and I hope this wont be the downfall...Doc's coaching ability (or lack thereof) finally creeping its way into this series. IN the first two games, at home, everything firing on all cylinders, I could coach those games. Now, Atlanta goes home, they make adjustments, they decide to run on every play, never set up in the halfcourt...so how do the celts counter? What's their adjustment?...Well they havent made one yet. And how do you let Joe Johnson continue to scorch you, without switching Ray off of him. Ray had played 40 minutes at that point, was clearly winded, and even if he had played 4 minutes, I dont think he could shut down Johnson. Especially when he's in the groove like that. Where was Posey? Where was Tony Allen? Why did Pierce switch to him so late? Th

Yeah everyone seems to be ripping Doc lately and wondering where Tony Allen is. I guess I'm in the minority. While Doc isn't that great of a coach I could care less about seeing Allen. I don't think he's a good player. Yeah, maybe he could do a little bit of a better job on Joe Johnson but do you trust him in the 4th quarter touching the ball on offense? Dude is a turnover waiting to happen.

The C's need to start taking the ball to the hoop and start heading to the line and then actually hitting their FT's. Once they start getting aggressive hopefully their defense will pick up. When we settle for J's it leads to easier opportunities for the Hawks if we're not hitting them.

Yeah, seriously how many horrible, quick threes did the Celts take down in Atlanta? I honestly cant even count, I know it was many. Tony Allen probably is not the answer, as you said, he scares the [BLEEP] out of me on offense.. but what about going small with Posey in there? Or throwing Pierce on him. Simmons brought up a good point today, maybe Pierce is more hurt from that body slam than people think...

But again, I hope Doc is planning on making some sort of adjustment in this series. It's terrifying to say against a team like the Hawks, but I don't think the c's can win by just playing their game and making Atlanta "come to them" anymore... That worked in the first two games, but then the hawks made an adjustment. Now it's Doc's turn... can he do it? I think so, but I won't know for sure until I see it.

All that being said. I'm still not worried. The c's should take care of homecourt and move on..but after watching Joe Johnson rip them apart last night, I'm more terrified than ever of a 2nd round matchup with Bron Bron.

Which is a sad statement considering they were barely above .500 after their major mid-season trades to bring in Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Wally and Delonte. Ugh...what happened to our 66-win team?

If the Celtics dont step it up they will be watching the rest of the season from a hotel room.
Hopefully game 5 will be better and tey can get a win at home!

Thank G-D for those 66 regular season wins so we could have this home court advantage. Who knew it would come in hand in this series.

Not so sure everyone thought they'd sweep. I know I didn't. As a Boston sports fan, if I have learned nothing else, I have learned that anything can happen in a playoff game. I haven't watched basketball for a really long time and did not jump back on the Celt's bandwagon but I have been keeping up. There's definitely no way the home court advantage couldn't help. Celts will move on. Go Celts.
BTW Josh, how come you never spell out God? You always use the dash.

No bandwagon here...my father and I have been season ticket holders since the late 70's...well I was sort of born into that.

Folks raised through Judaism don't spell out the word G-D.

Thanks for the answer Josh, I always wondered.
I'd say there have always been a lot of C's fans who never jumped off the wagon. I used to go to games and watch faithfully. I just got busy with other things and stopped watching. Doesn't mean it's not exciting though. Go C's.

I agree....I've actually been upset lately since I'm in the midst of law school finals and haven't had a chance to go to one of the playoff games yet even though we have season tickets. Hopefully there will be some more games at the Gahden.
