If this is not the best story EVER, I don't know what is.  We need more mothers like this in the the world!!  Go Mrs. Hambleton!!!!!!!!!

'MEAN MOM' SELLS SON'S CAR AFTER MISDEED

DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet." After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone — by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.

"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"

The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.

Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week — just for the feedback.

It should be a law! You get caught drunk driving, you get your car confiscated and sold along with all the other trouble you get into!!!! I love it!!

You know, if you are caught selling drugs, they seize property. I'm thinking you might be on to something here. What do we do with the proceeds of the sale?

It should be donated to an organization dedicated to prevent drunk driving such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) AND they should have to do community work for one of these organizations for a year, maybe two.

Or as direct benefits to victims of drunk driving accidents?

Works too OR a combination of both!

I think one of the problems with the system we have is that victims are only compensated by insurance companies. There is no direct compensation from the drunk to the person he/she hurt. This would create that avenue...

It would also create DIRECT repercussions for the drunk driver too.

Yes, although we have many direct repercussions for drunk drivers...have you seen what happens to second and third time offenders?

No, what happens?

The repeat offender loses his/her license for 1 year. When they re-apply that have to drive a vehicle with an ignition interlock breathalyzer installed at the driver expense ($1500) they need this PRIOR to being retested which costs $500. The breathalyzer has to be blown before the car starts and goes off multiple times WHILE the person is drivng, requiring them to pull over and retake it.

The third offender is jailed for a year...and the above kicks in.

You're welcome Valintyne and Fenwaydav. I thought the story was fantastic!

Chip, I do remember seeing that on the news. Gotta tell you, I love it. I wish there was a way to prevent them from even driving drunk even ONCE. My "party" days are over but when I was single and went out to clubs with my friends, I was ALWAYS the designated Mother Hen. I don't drink, have never liked it, so when we went out, they could drink because they knew that I would round up my chickens at the end of the night and deliver them home safe and sound. I don't understand why everyone can't be responsible. It's so easy.

June,

First off, unfortunately, there is no magic bullet where alcoholism is ocncerned. We can diminish the problem, but not make it go away completely, unless we shoot everyne who has a third drink!!!

And Valintyne, welcome back. How's the new digs?

This mother should be elevated to sainthood!

If only other parents cared as much, think of all the crashes that could have been prevented and lives saved.

Accountability and responsibility what a concept! I was told something similar would happen to me. I never tested the theory. My brother did and lost! Kudo's for her and hopefully her son learns something from this.
