I received an email at work.  At the bottom, below the sender's signature, address and phone number, was the following.  I thought it was wonderful and very true.  God bless our pets!!

"The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, is his dog.  A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and in sickness.  He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer.  He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world.  He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince.  When all other friends desert, he remains.  When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.”

George Graham Vest

“The faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying his master, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, there by the graveside will be the noble dog.

June, what a great piece. I was walking home through the park on Thursday and there was a man and his dog. The man was throwing a ball and the dog was chasing and retrieving it. Countless number of times the dog with chase that ball down and bring it back to his master, lay it at his feet and tail going a mile a minute just so he would pick it up a throw it again. I thought to myself "stupid dog" after reading this piece, I changed my mind. That was Loyalty......

Here is a look at this from a reverse angle.

We have two Black Labs that are the sweetest animals. They have never given us anything but love and loyalty and here's where the twist comes in.

It was 1998 and we just got our first dog "Buddy". A year and a half later we bought our first house in a great area for when we had our family. I had to get our dog familiar with his new surroundings so we walked around our block. As we made the 2nd to last turn we came across another Lab who sat proudly at his driveway as we made the turn and approached his house. My Dog finally picked up on him and they became instant buddies. If we or they walked the block no matter what time or weather condition the other dog would pick up the scent and start barking to go out and play ball.

This lasted until 2003 when we moved to a new area where the cost of living was better for our growing family. I was heart broken to think that Buddy was going to lose out on "His Best Friend" and never see him again. Our dog(the best dog in the world)is about to have his world turned upside down and he graciously jumped in the hatch when the van was opened for him. the dog that had never shown any aggression towards the kids or cat and just gave unconditional love is going to taken away from "His Best Buddy"

It's been almost 5 years now and Buddy is now gray in the chin and getting older but I still think he misses his time playing ball and taking our walks to see his friend.

fenwaydav,

That IS loyalty and love.

lafko, Thank you very much. Now I'm seating here crying like the useless sap I be. I'm sure he misses his pal every day, but you and your family are most likely the first and most important loves of his life. You guys come first.

I have a soft spot for dogs (and cats) that sometimes I think is a little bit way too soft. I can't even watch a pedigree commercial that's running now that shows a dog at a shelter because I sincerely start crying like an idiot. I can't even do anything to stop it. They love unconditionally and ask for nothing. Their incredible ability to forgive is something I beg God I can achieve someday.

P.S - The author of the quote should have come after the second paragraph. I unfortunately did not write any of this, but it spoke to my heart. I hope you guys liked it.

June:

The Pedigree commercial hits me hard too. I hate to see dogs locked up in kennels, I know they have a chance at being adopted but it takes a special type person to do that and for only for a special few. We used a breeder in NH for our 2 dogs and the pedigree in the parents were great so our dogs are great.

I often think of dropping everything and starting a business. I would love to run a Doggy Day Care where people could drop off their pets for the day while at work. I've been doing the driving a Truck thing for almost 20 years and I like driving but I LOVE DOGS. It's said that "If you love what you do you'll never work another day in you're life". I think if I could look into a crystal ball and see that my dream would work I'd do it tommorrow. Unfortunalty I don't think it will ever happen.

For now I have the best 2 dogs I could ever ask for and I will enjoy everyday with them.

lafko,

I feel the EXACT SAME WAY!!!! My dream would be to open a sanctuary, a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats and maybe other animals too. I would spend the rest of my life caring for them and rolling in the mud with them and be the happiest human being alive! Unfortunately, unless the lottery smiles upon me, I don't think I'd be able to do this. If it does though, be around because I'm coming on here to recruit!! LOL!

For now, I do what I can. I take care of my babies (2 cats in my avatar) and when we buy a house, will have 2 dogs as well. I try to reach out and contribute to shelters and animal organizations too, but what I can do is limited of course. I write letters for legislations for animal rights and protection. The HSUS is always looking for people to write letters. The people that are on the field for animals every day are some of my heroes.

That Pedigree commercial kills me. Just absolutely devastates me.

lafko,

What breed of dogs do you have?

June,
Forgive my ignorance. HSUS?
I have a friend who was working three part time jobs to pay her mortgage after she got divorced. She is also an animal lover. She decided to open her house as a doggy day care. She takes care of about six or seven dogs while their "parents" work and when they go on vacation. This is now her only job. Oh, I forgot to mention, she was doing child care for awhile but decided she liked the dogs better. lol.

jonsmom,

You are NOT ignorant. I should have clarified. The HSUS is the Humane Society of the United States. They're one of the largest animal protection agencies in the nation.

From 3 jobs to 1 AND she loves the one she has now!! I love it!!! I would be waking up happy everyday if I was going to care for dogs all day long. The AKC/Eukanuba dog championship was on Animal Planet last night and I was ga-ga over those pooches. They were all so cute!!!!

You know, as I sit here and read about you folks wanting to start sanctuaries, I was thinking that'd be a good idea for me to do. Then I realized I already have...And the funny part of it is, I know there's a lot of pets in my home, but I still want more. Go fig! (I'm a softie for animals too, if you hadn't caught on.)

My beloved dalmation of 13 years died a year ago last October (I had to put her to sleep...). During the Super Bowl when the Bud ad came on with the dalmation "training" the horse, I thought of her and cried. I loved her deeply and she me...aqnd I miss her.

We now have a year old yellow lab. He is very different in personality, and I love him too. I'm sure 12 years from today I will feel the same about him I do about her...

Oh, I get it. Chip and lafko want to see how many times they can make me cry on this post. Ok, that's twice now guys! :)

Chip, I wouldn't have been able to see the commercial. I'm sorry it saddened you so much. I often look at my babies who are now 3, and I wonder what I'm going to do when they are gone. The thought alone brings me to tears. I hope they have a very strong drug ready for me when that day arrives.

Xantun, we do what we can, right? The pets in your home are safe and sound and that's your sanctuary!

Chip, A good pet comes into our lives and they are our children. Sorry for your loss. I can still remember my dog an cat from early childhood. Although I can have a dog in my apartment, I don't think it would be happy confined. My cat Daisy has been a good friend.

Absolutely, June, and I swear that they eat better than I do! But, I'd have it no other way. Even when they get on my nerves (and they do), I still don't know what I'd do without 'em.

Chip, I know how you feel. I can't see commercials with beagles without thinking of my first dog, and it's been 9 years since we had to put her to sleep. And I'm sure that if something happens to our dachshund, that "rub my belly" Pedigree commercial is going to kill me, especially since that dog is the spitting image of mine. (What is it with Pedigree and the making people cry with their ads?)

When I was a kid I had the best cat in the world named Snowball. When she died I was so heartbroken. We got a new cat a short time after, but was never the same as the lovable Snowball.
Fast forward to last February when I finally give in to my kids begging for a pet, and myself still being on the fence as to giving in. When we left that house that day to look for our new friend, I said to my daughter lets look for a white cat with black spot on her head ala Snowball.....would you believe the 1st stop we found Bella, pure white with the black spot on her head. It was as if Snowball had been reincarnated. And Bella is just as lovable and fun as my Snowball was.

Lots of great stories. I never get tired of reading pet stories. I love animals. I posted this quote because I thought it was beautiful and true. I wanted to see how many other people were as soft with their pets as I am.

Xantun, not only do my cats eat better than me, but I swear they can make me do whatever they want. Garfield was sleeping on the couch last night (they're not allowed on the nice couch) with his back legs up in the air and his front legs up over his head.....snoring. My husband would have picked him up and put him on the floor immediately. Me, the SUCKER, I melted into a little puddle, put myself back together and kissed him. I didn't have the heart to wake him up. I swear, they look at me and they can see the invisible word SAP written on my forehead.

Yeah, Cajun (my cat) is pretty good at the mind-control thing. Then again, so are the dog and the parakeets. (My rainbow shark doesn't really try. He's the chillest of all the animals here!) I can't even tell you how many times I've been in the pet aisle of a store (or worse, an actual pet store) to get food, bird cage bedding, or kitty litter and wind up spending a small fortune in treats and toys, as well as whatever I meant to buy. And of course, Cajun will decide that I haven't brushed her recently enough (anything longer than about 5 minutes) and grab hold of her brush and bring it over to me. Sucker that I am, I usually drop what I'm doing and brush her. (I'm pretty sure I've got the same word tattooed on my forehead, June, don't feel bad!)

Xantun,

I'm laughing out loud over here!!! Why are they so hilarious?? My husband can't go by the treats and toys without grabbing something either! Peekaboo sometimes decides that I haven't cleaned myself well enough and proceeds to 'clean' me. She brushes (pulls) my hair and licks my face. Pushing her away does nothing because she's determined to get me clean! Also, my husband can't leave the house without her blessing. He HAS to check in with her before he leaves. Incredible! Garfield has his moments in which my neck of all places is the only place he wants to sleep on. I push, I shift....nothing. I usually have to give in and watch tv OVER the orange fur in my face!

OH! And Peekaboo likes my strawberry flavored lip gloss. It's an all out attack because she jumps on me in an attempt to lick my lip gloss off me in the morning, hence I walk out of my house covered in fur AFTER I've rolled it off with the lint remover.

Truth is, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love it.

Cajun has decided that she likes my old, beat to hell Doc Martens. When I take them off, I have to make sure I put them in a room she's not allowed in, otherwise she'll stick her head in them. And the next to last time she did that, she got stuck. (They're the 8 eye boots, so they're just above the ankle. Not too bad, but apparently not bad enough to discourage her!) Plus, we just bought a new chair for our living room not that long ago. As soon as we brought it home, Cajun claimed it over the chair that had been hers at the time. So now, if anyone sits in it, even if there's another chair she's allowed to sit in, they get subjected to the patented "pissed off cat evil eye" look, and quite possibly a very furry lap robe. (I know you've seen the look before, June!) She's not allowed on our couch, but if I happen to be napping there, I'll wake up with her forepaws planted on my forehead and her staring down at me. Of course, it's not just the cat who's hilarious, but I'll save the other stories for another post...That byte count fairy isn't my friend!

LMAO!!!!

Oh yeah, I KNOW that look! The one that says 'how dare you invade my domain without my personal blessing?'. Peeka has this look in which her head looks like it's being pulled up by he ears and she looks very confused. It's hysterical!
