Yes, you read that title correctly. If you are a regular to my blogs, you aren't surprised that I am writing about climate change again.

This time, though, I'll be brief.

Friday night on the FOX25 News At 10, a special report I've been working on, along with producer Sarah Unis, will air soon after A.J.'s weather report. Of course, you'll want to know the weekend forecast, but I do hope you will stick around and watch the story. It will present to you an alternative theory to what you generally hear about global warming. There is another side of so-called "climate realists" that believe that the Earth's temperature has not only stabilized, but actually cooled a bit. Some of their evidence is that the global temperature hasn't gone up in the last decade, the oceans have actually cooled a bit, and there is more sea ice around Antarctica this year. You will hear it in their own words. This flies in the face of everything you've heard from the media (yes, us!) and the government, but there is compelling evidence. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Also want to mention... the children that you'll see in the story are part of the 6th grade class at Remington Middle School in Franklin, MA. After seeing "An Inconvenient Truth" and learning about potential consequences of a warmer planet, they stopped talking and started acting. They teamed with a local businesses to set up collection sites for used compact fluorescent lights, which have to be collected carefully due to the small amount of mercury they contain. After reading about this project, and their concerns about global warming, I wanted to talk to them and find out what was making our youngsters worry about global warming. My boys, especially my older one, has brought up his concerns. I believe a lot of youngsters are growing up scared about this, just like I was about nuclear war when I was a youngster. Here is a link to an article about the excellent efforts of these students... http://www.wickedlocal.com/franklin/news/education/x156

I look forward to your comments. Have a great weekend, and Happy Mothers' Day.

Uh oh! No you didn't. Now you've done it. No more invites to those fancy conferences on what's ailing the planet and where to buy carbon credits. I must say Kevin, I'm proud to see that both you and Fox have the integrity to counter the hype that is causing panic throughout our school children, who are daily inundated with the thought that this planet is going to self-destruct in their life-times, and worse yet, that they are the cause. I've been watching a PBS special on the doping of East German athletes during the 70's and the 80's. Interviewed years later, most never even questioned what their coaches and government were telling them. Propaganda does work if left unchecked. Thank you for showing our citizens that what they've been hearing, isn't necessarily the "Truth". No matter how "inconvenient" it may be for some to hear it. Again, thank you.

I look forward to watching your report,it's important that people hear about both sides of this issue, then draw their own conclusions.Thank you Fox for having the balls to air this long over due report.

Finally! It drives me absolutely nuts that the media has been the lap dog of global warming. Thank you for airing this special. At best we have been tracking weather temperatures for 100-115 years. Less then the blink of an eye in terms of the earth's age.

Some day we will look back and laugh at all the kookiness of global warming.

I watched "An Inconvenient Truth" in school and i didn't know what to think...I didnt know wether to think it was right or wrong! Yes, the movie was informational but it did confuse me a little bit and i couldnt comprehend it as well as they were explaining it. After watching your report I think now that it is not something that we should worry about so much!

If you search the internet and research the changes in the earth's climate, you'll see geologists who say that over the past few billion years the earth has gone through 4 ice ages. Each ice age lasts several hundred millions of years, and we are currently in the middle of the fourth ice age. An ice age is defined of having the existence of snow and ice existing on the planet. During an ice age the climate will fluctuate between periods of glaciers forming and then glaciers melting, but not melting completely. This cycle lasts for about 100,000 years and repeats for a few hundred million years. We are currently in a warming cycle from the last glaciers that existed about 35,000 years ago. They say 35,000 years ago there was a glacier covering where NYC is today. So they are saying that the earth cools and warms in cycles all by itself whether humans are polluting the air or not. The question is if the pollution is making the cycles happen faster or slower than normal, but because it is a 100,000 year cycle and we've only been polluting the air for the past 150 years, there's no way to tell what our impact is. the bottom line is that the earth is currently warming up from the last glacier forming period and there is absolutely nothing that humans can do about it. We didn't cause it, we can't stop it. Reports like Al Gore's will say that the earth is warming. It has warmed a bit during recent years, however its only 1 degree warmer than it was 100 years ago. It seems that Al Gore's reports are only looking at a short period of time, which would show a considerable amount warm

Do some searches on the internet for ice age and you'll find some interesting stuff about the earths climate.

Recent changes in solar activity have set us up for a great opportunity to learn just what much CO2 and the Sun affect climate change. With a little work, we might even be able to restore a rational debate in the subject.

I've written an introduction to the new situation that I call Science, Method, Climatology, and Forgetting the Basics, its at http://wermenh.com/climate/science.html

Fifty years from now people will look back at this time as the golden era of climatology. It's a great time to come back to the subject.

Well done Kev! It is so important to learn about both sides of the issue. I loved the way you included the children. I am especially proud of the two young ladies who spoke during. Both are former students of mine!!!

Great job. Thanks for standing up for balance and objectivity. There is so much hype and propaganda out there.

It is interesting that a few months ago there was talk in congress about raising the gas tax to fight global warming. Now they're talking about a tax holiday to ease economic worries. What will happen when the price of gas is $8/gallon? Combine prices like that with cooling earth temperatures over the next decade (as has been predicted) and the global warming movement is history (I hope).

Let's hope they don't do anything rash before then.

The response to our piece has been overwhelmingly positive. I did not expect that. I've read blogs on other web sites claiming I've been sucked in by the conservative media. Funny how we are called liberal or conservative based on any one story we do by the side that is countered in said piece. Again, I tell you, I am a registered democrat. I actually voted for Al Gore. This isn't about politics for me, it is about science. It is obvious that those who have written here can see that. Science is continuous exploration. This story was intentionally one-sided, not because I want to change your minds with this one story, but because you've already heard the other side ad nauseum. I hope everyone always considers both sides of any argument. Discourse, not name-calling, is the appropriate scientific discussion.

At the Boston/New England Emmy Awards Saturday night, Bill O'Reilly was presented an award. When he was called to receive it, boos (rudely, in my opinion) rang out from the crowd. Perhaps this is my fate? Bring it on!

What is going on with the flooding in Delaware? I've heard that some places there have gotten over four inches of rain today alone and the strong winds off of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay have made things worse. Do you know about any of this?

That storm that rolled through the mid-Atlantic states is the same one bringing us the clouds and wind Monday. It is a huge storm that intensified in the Atlantic overnight. It is moving slowly due to t blocking pattern that has been in place in the north Atlantic. We might be windy and chilly, but we are dodging a bigger bullet.

I believe the big test for global cooling will be as soon as this summer. If New England gets more thunderstorms than recent summers that could be the sign. Canada has been getting a lot of severe weather in recent summers - coincident with warmer temperatures and higher humidities. So far, this Spring has seen a lot of severe weather down south so global cooling could be upon us. We have to track this. Shucks Kev, I missed your news story!

thank God someone came out with something like this. Global warming is a farce that is taking money away from more worthy concerns. Like what was said above, we have been tracking temperatures for a little over 100 years (since the 1850's I think) which of course is nothing compared to Earth's actual age. Think of global warming this way: if at 6AM it's 30 degrees out and at noon it's 60. It doesn't mean it will be 90 at 6PM or 120 at midnight!

Good job Kevin!!

P.S. Tell Maria hi for us all. We love her!!

Kevin,

I don't think you're part of some right-wing plot, I think you're guilty of sloppy science.

"Global Cooling" is nothing of the sort. A short term cooling trend caused by La Nina and a low point in the regular cycle of solar output isn't the end of human driven climate change. If you did what you should do as a scientist, some actual research, you would realize that. Instead you insist on using non-scientific media sources and giving time to the handful of contrarians in the misguided effort to bring "balance" to the story.

You should know that in science there is no such thing as "fairness" or balance, there is only what the evidence shows us is true. When the overwhelming majority of the scientists doing the research in climate science (and publishing in peer reviewed journals, not the Wall Street Journal or Tech Central Station)issue not one, or two, but FOUR sweeping, thoroughly per reviewed assessments over 15years telling us that human generated greenhouse gas emissions are warming the planet, prudent, scientifically literate people take it seriously and act. Instead you choose to mislead people with comforting, but false, junk-science.

You have a chance to educate people Kevin. Shame on you for wasting it.

Whoa, trhggr. I take the science seriously. I've made it very clear that I don't have the answers. I can't spend my days researching the topic as much as I'd like. I have a family to spend time with. However, when I have time I read articles about this very subject. I have attended many conferences dealing with the subject. I have listened to some of the prominent names in science talk about global climate change.
It is a fact, trhggr, that the projected sea rise to date has not been realized. It is a fact that we are using climate models that are unproven. It is a fact that the globe has shown no warming in the last 10 years. It is a fact that no climate model showed the steady temperatures in the last decade in the face of rising CO2. You can say la nina did it, and you are likely correct this past year. All climate modelers will tell you they can NOT project la nina and el nino episodes. If la nina is causing any recent cooling, how can you say it won't continue. Nobody else can.
I am, trhggr, in search of the truth. I will say this until I am blue in the face... we are wasting our time chasing global warming brought about by carbon dioxide. There are much bigger issues, even environmental, issues in the world to tackle. So much money is being spent on a small issue. The climate will change. What if the cooling does happen? Will we then spend billions fighting a coming ice age? Let's get back to something worthwhile... be it air pollution, water pollution, recycling, coastal hurricane damage mitigation, you name it. What I will not do is allow

By "overwhelming", do you mean more, or less than 50%? You can say it. Heck, you can even print it, but it doesn't make it true. The jury's still out. But I hope you're not "overwhelmed" with that news.

Perhaps you should look into the IPCC assessment reports. Don't confuse a half dozen credible scientists with debate or doubt.

Kevin,

I'm sorry but your response is just not good enough. You don't have to spend hours on end doing research to understand what the state of the science is. Try going to primary sources like www.realclimate.org those people are actual climatologists engaged in peer reviewed research.

Your comment about how to tackle climate change is also telling. That is a policy debate and one that does need to be had but it has nothing to do with the science. The cost on fighting climate change doesn't make the evidence for global warming less compelling.

And pardon me for being blunt Kevin, I'm sure your a thoroughly decent guy and I don't know you personally. I understand your a family man, as am I. But, you are a public figure, one with serious scientific credentials. Your not an average guy sitting in a local coffee shop opining on current events. You have a responsibility to get your facts straight and as I have pointed out before, you haven't. If you can't take the time to do the basic research, don't blog on the topic.
