Most of you reading this are likely from New England.  So, I figure you likely understand how changeable the weather can be.  Good so far?  Well, that being the case, I assume most of you look at the 5-day forecast and figure that by day 5, you have to keep tabs as it can certainly change in the next couple of days.  Tonight, I received an email from a viewer telling me to stop talking about the possibility of rain this coming weekend, as it is 5 days away.  He said the 5-day is a joke.  I respect that opinion, but I also know the vast majority of you like the 5 day more than you like watching me.  It's ok, I know.  Tonight, I am looking 5 days out and seeing the POSSIBILITY of rain this weekend.  Much of this hinges on how the tropics act with a disturbance currently near Puerto Rico.  This could change, but it is a possibility.

Does that help you in your planning, or does the uncertainty bug you?  Do you want the 5-day there?

Talk to me.

Kev, We have had conversations about this very subject from time to time. While I pay attention (sometimes) I take a forecast with a grain of salt. With all your equipment and new technology You are just as much a slave to New England weather as we all are. So five day or tomorrow if the wind changes there goes your forecast. But Kev you guys try hard as possible to keep us up to date and informed.

Kev,

That email was from some lose-bomb just wanting to vent about nothing. To those of us with 1/2-a-brain, the fickle nature of New England weather is obvious. I appreciate the five-day outlook, and easily understand that meteorology is not always an exact science.
With all of the tools and instruments you've got, none of them is a crystal ball. Don't let the hot air from some bag o' wind rankle you at all...most of us appreciate the 5-day...

Hi Kevin!
I like the 5 day, it gives us a 'peek' at what MIGHT be ahead! You generally say too that this is what it "looks" like or "potential" so I get that it's New England and things 'could' change! I generally use it as a guide and wait till your Thursday's forecast to finalize all plans! Usually w/in 3 days you can NAIL it! I've said this before you, AJ & Cyndi really are the perfect trifecta of meteorologists and I do rely on you guys for the most accurate weather forecasting. However, when you report weather that's not in my favor (like the "potential" for rain this w/e..I'm supposed to be down the Cape for my last time!)..I'm sorry I pray you are W.R.O.N.G.! :) Thanks for working so hard!!
ps. If you've got ANY pull place some Sun over Yarmouth Sat/Sun...thanks :) Smiley

Kev, keep the 5-day!!
Extended forecasts have come a long way with technology and a better understanding of how New England weather is so uncooperative. Like you said, it offers a window of what may happen, allowing viewers to plan ahead better, and gives us a trend of where temps and precip are headed.

Hi Kevin,
I love to give advice, you know. But you will be absolutely the best person to make the call, and furthermore, in a far better position than most of us to make it reality.

You have a good scientific side and probably have an idea of the odds. If I were you, I would go on that basis....quality....will enhance your livelyhood the best.

If you'd like to share data here, I'd love to see what your experience id on the likelyhood of the 5-day being accurate.

I've never kept numbers, herb, but I'll see if I can whip something up.

Seems like the 5-day is wanted, and understood, by all of you. So, we'll keep them. Like I ever had a say in this.

Excellent comments, everyone.

The 5 day is a useful tool but a person needs to continue to check for up-dates. That's why it is a 'forecast' and not a 'certaincast'
