Have you heard about the legislation passing through the House and Senate on Beacon Hill?

If passed, it would make all future bills "gender generic".  In other words, all references would be:  he/she or his/her.

The bill came about after a woman legislator was reading a bill about  the nursing profession.  In the copy there was a reference to "he".  The lawmaker was shocked and outraged saying the nursing profession is made up primarily of women.

As a woman, I have to say, these kinds of things make me so angry.  I am a woman who has worked hard in the business world to be treated fair and equal to my male counterparts.

In the working world, I believe women should be treated like our male counterparts,  good or bad.  However, when women fight for things like "gender generic" language in copy, I think it makes the rest of us look bad.

A pronoun reference in a law, as long as it doesn't change the meaning of the law, does not take away from me as a woman or my worth as a citizen.  If women in power want to fight for something important, fight for equal pay.   Fight for equal hiring practices.  Fight for the things that mean something to all women and make a difference in our lives not these silly issues that make us all look like we are picking a fight.

LLTA, Kim! ...Contradicts how you were making it seem you felt about this earlier this morning, but I thought you were kidding.
...So glad to see you have some security in yourself, because - let's face it - the roots of this type of claptrap is INsecurity; nothing but.

Atlanta either just passed, or is strongly considering, a stupid pc law to change "Men working" signs to people working. What a waste of time and money. The woman leading the charge tried to make the case that men working signs,are holding down women. Over all I agree with equality for women;
However strenuous, heavy lifting, and construction jobs need the strenght of a man. I would not want to depend on a 120lb woman to carry me out of a fire.

I wouldn't have a problem is all laws were couched in "she"....kinda a non-issue at this address.

Just a quick question Kim, is this same woman legislator who said her life was threatened a few months ago?

I don’t think it’s all women pushing to see that particular language he/she his/her get put into every letter, document, etc, etc, that’s ever going to be written. Perhaps it’s just this one woman Legislator who has taken it upon herself to do this because she got her undies in a bundie when she read the word “he” referenced in a bill about the nursing profession. I personally don’t think it makes women look bad at all, if anything I think it makes her look like a frustrated Legislator with to much time on her hands.

I agree with you, you have to fight the good fight for something that’s worth while and going to make a difference in your life not for something as stupid as this. It’s too bad that in politics an absurdity is not a handicap.

Keep up the good work Kim sit back and watch the circus taking place at the State House and have a good laugh about it.

As a retired fire chief, I have a bit of a sense of humor on this. We stopped calling ourselves firemen and began calling ourselves firefighters a long time ago....that's gender neutral, huh? Go figure...the bastion of "manliness"....

nomorehacks, I trained a lot of women at the Mass Fire Academy. Lemme tell ya, when you see the 120 lb woman come in...heave a sigh of relief. They can do it too!!!

I'm glad to see there are no pressing issues facing the state right now.
I hope they do change all the laws. I'll be happy to take all the old law papers and use them to heat my house this winter.

This is absurd! All it sounds like to me is another 'let's focus on some inane matter so we have a reason to ignore what's important' move. Way to go lady! Nice way of giving women a name. You want to do us a favor and go home now??

Kim,

I was reading an article on buying a home, and in this article they referred to the realtor as a she, never a he. I kind of chuckled a bit because I'm male and I'am a realtor. Was I offended? Hell no, everyone knows realtors aren't all women, just like everyone knows nurses aren't all men.

This is all a bunch of petty nonsense.

This women legislator should quit her job and stay home and watch soaps all day. We don't need whiners like her in that profession.

Shouldn't we be more concerned with pressing problems such as the high gas prices, bad economy, etc?

Absolutely Xantun. They are going to call it a He/She debt and resolve it with new tolls! Ta-DA!

Perhaps come this fall, the news media will be kind enough to publish a list of all the nonsense legislation along with the names of those who sponsored the legislation so the voters can see who isn't doing an effective job. Time to vote for him/her who will devote their time to important issues.

Kim,

Doesn’t the MA legislature have more important things to legislate? All this gender sensitivity is stupid. If anything, saying “he” for everything tends to emasculate men in women dominated professions like nursing.

As a woman, you need to pick your fights. Fighting for equal pay for equal job responsibilities is a good fight. Fighting for the right to perform male dominated jobs is a good fight. Fighting for the proper use of he, she or it is weak.

I have to be honest with you folks, I’ve seen it happen time and time again, I don’t think it’s going to matter who we elect and send to the State House because for some strange reason no matter who we send there, these people start out with good intentions, but once they get into the State House something happens to them. It seems like they go through some kind of metamorphosis once they get there. They seem to forget about all the right things they were supposed to do for us.

Another reason I moved out of the state.
Legislatures in MA. always on the ball for a "much to do about nothing" legislation!
