John McCain names his running mate, the governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. Sarah who? I feel sure that's what lots of folks were saying last week when the much anticipated announcement was made.

Really, we don't know much about Palin. I'm sure she is a fantastic person who is well qualified to hold public office. I'm not sure how qualified she is to be the Vice President and I know she's not ready to be President!

Having said all that, I was very upset by the position Palin was put in last week when her name was announced. She stood in front of the faithful and essentially said she was the answer to Hillary Clinton. Sarah Palin told women not to worry about the issues and to vote solely on gender. She said she is the answer to the 18 million women who supported Clinton even though she and the senator couldn't be further apart on all the major issues.

Give me -- and all other women -- a break. Why do the Republicans assume that women were only going to vote for Clinton because she is a woman? Why would anyone assume that "any old woman" will do? Forget about the candidate's stand on a woman's right to choose. Forget about the candidate's stand on the war, the economy, taxes and education. How about health care and the environment?

No disrespect to Palin. She may turn out to be my hero, but I assure you, it won' have anything to do with her being a woman.

"Forget about the candidate's stand on a woman's right to choose."

-Guess we now know where you stand on the abortion issue, Kim. Well, I'm very pro-life and take big-time offense to your comments.

Kim:

I am appalled by the carnage women are engaging in with the Palin pick.

1st, Hillary has gotten to where she is in large part to the success of her man, Bill. She rode his coattails into public office and much of her notoriety is due to his gravitas. I know she is a lawyer and she had some high profile cases (Wal Mart/ Watergate), but to earn the political cache to run for president by herself? Palin by contrast has earned everything herself, independently of her husband. In fact, her husband plays a supporting role to her.

2nd, it just shows that women have their own versions of “Uncle Tom’s.” You will be respected and admired as so long as you keep true to the democratic platform. God forbid if you are women with independent ideas and a core belief system that works to the benefit of your own family and your own life’s choices.

3rd, unlike most of the limousine liberals women on the View, behind the anchor desk, on the big screen, living in Newton, Wellesley and Hingham et. al., she not only talks the talk and walks the walk with her infant son spared the abortion procedure and her eldest son off to Iraq in the infantry.

4th, we already have hard evidence which candidate is true tohis rhetoric. On one side we have a candidate that doesn’t want to employ the “same old players,” yet chooses the ultimate insider short of Ted Kennedy to be his running mate—a running mate I might add who was never able to get nominated himself despite several attempts. On the other hand we have a candidate that claims the “maverick” mantle and has actually delivered by thinking outside the box, bucking the safe choices and putting it all on the line. Tell me which one is the hypocrite.

5th All the criticisms about experience only highlights the lack of experience by Obama. While the possibility exists Palin COULD assume office, it is a definite that Obama WOULD be in office. So who do you want to be your president, a state senator with no foreign policy experience, no executive experience, and no ability thus far to demonstrate he is able to answer questions directly on the spot without saying the word, “uhhhh” before each sentence as if you could see the smoke coming out his ears as he tries to come up with the “right” thing to say…or a woman WITH executive experience, the mother of 5, including a soldier in a war zone, and having served on an oversight committee for oil companies in a state replete with natural resources in the thick of the current debate how to best break our dependency on oil?

Lastly, your blog reminds me of a joke I’ve heard about the Women’s Movement….”How many women does it take to screw in a light bulb?” The answer is 10…1 to do it, and 9 to say, ‘I could have done it better.’” No wonder there is a glass ceiling. Men might have built it, but women keep patching it up.

Kim's comments confirm what I've been saying for years, abortion is still the central issue in American politics. What were the first words out of her mouth? A woman's "right to choose". The issue underlies almost every political battle of the last 35 years. And much as libs like to say it's settled, that is simply not true.

Just because someone has not heard of her, does not mean she is not ready to do the job.

Why does someone have to have 20 years of experience to be the best?

It is a good fit. They seem to have chemistry already. She is relaxed and seems to enjoy the busy schedule. I like that she has a personality where many of these politicians do not.

The pundants are always trying to raise questions to add more hot air to the disscussion. Kim, I thought you were cooler than that. I found nothing negative about a pundant hypothetical. If you voted for Clinton twice, like VB said, then you followed the female sheep to vote for the "Hansome Candidate". Further more; Hillarys 18 million votes were from liberal die hards. Most people don't even bother with the primarys. 54% of women voted for Bush, for national security reasons. Iam impressed with Palin so far, and I have yet to meet a woman that dosent have her own mind.

I awoke on the Cape for my last day on vacation and the first thing I heard was Kim C. claiming to speak for "all" women, by saying they should be 'offended' by McCain's choice of Sara Palin as VP. Mrs. Palin isn't going to get the hard core, arm-pit braiding hard left that supported Hillary, but then again, they would never vote for a candidate who opposes "choice". But all accounts Mrs. Palin is an accomplished individual who has achieved more reforms for "change" in her two years as Governor of Alaska than Obama or Joe biden have in all their combined public "service".
Let's see if Fox has the guts for "Fair and Balanced" when it comes to their own. I'm guessing they won't and will pull this post. Here's a newsfalsh to Kim C., you are not the mainstream, your job is to speak for Kim C., no one else.

I am still waiting to hear how come Kim knew the bar weighed 45 pounds. Is she a former gym rat? I would think Kim would like someone who can pull in fishing nets and shoot a bug off a flower with an machine gun.

Footnote: Gym rat is a complimentary term.

The only reason McCain picked a women for VP was because he was hoping to pick up the 18 million votes of Hillary Clinton. So far this might come back to bite him. The more we’re learning about Palin the more McCain must be saying to himself “what did I do”. So far we know she fired her brother in law as a State Trooper, her 17 year old daughter is 5 months pregnant and that’s only in the past two days. What else are we going to find out about her?

If Republicans assume that women were only going to vote for Clinton because she is a woman like Kim said, then, wouldn’t you think Hillary would have gotten the nomination instead of Obama? Didn’t Bill Clinton just play a supporting roll to his wife Hillary? Didn’t Hillary campaign and run for office for Senator independently from Bill? If this women has so much executive experience and served on an oversight committee for oil companies in a state replete with natural resources, what has she done? Where are the results? Why are we still struggling with oil prices? Give me a break!!!!!

If Palin stood up and said don’t worry about the issues and to vote solely on gender, I would have to say she’s a hypocrite making a hypocritical statement. Hardly Presidential material.

Let's think about this......McCain is not getting any younger and has had some health issues in the past. Should anything happen to him if he becomes president, can Mrs. Palin step in and become president of the United States? That is a scary thought. And now that she has gone public with her 17 year old daughter being pregnant...didn't we just have a lot of media attention with Britney Spears 16 year old sister having a baby? What message are we sending to our children?.... Just something to ponder. I am not against having a women in the white house but I do believe McCain has shot himself in the foot with his pick. I will not vote for him solely on the fact that he has a women on his ticket. I am interested in an individual who has what it takes to take this country out of the economical disaster that it has been put into, and is strong on foreign policy. I do not believe (I could be wrong) that Sara Palin is that person, female or not.

I am sure McCain interviewed everyone around her. I am sure he knew the daughter was pregnant. NECN just reported that a London paper was reporting the 5 month child was the daughter's and not The Gov.'s. The Gov. went public to prove the daughter could not have a 5 month child.

So what she fired someone. It shows she is someone of action. NECN also reported this guy made threats against his wife. People get fired all the time, in and out of law enforcement.

I am impressed that no one in her home town blew the whistle that the daughter is pregnant.
This shows the town has respect for Palin.

When was the last time a President died of natural causes while in office? The current vice president had how many heart attacks? They constantly have doctors around when in office. Nothing is going to happen to McCain.

all we hear all the times are democrates saying poor, blacks and woman should be given opportunities. But ,they never back it up.Just talk, talk, talk, blaw, blaw, blaw, yadi ya ya!

Historiclly, it has always been the republican party tha thave REALLY intiated these idea. The DEM have alwsy jus bloviated about these idea for votes ,while doing nothing.

1.it was the republican party that actually past civil rights.

2. It was the republican party that help to finally push given the women the right to vote.

3. During the Bush administration, he hired more blacks than any other president ,including A black woman named Condelisa Rice!!! That better than SMILEY JIMMY CARTER and the so called first black president -BILL CLINTON!!!

4.IT WAS A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT WHO ENDED SLAVERY!

Also, are you trying to tell us that WHITE GUILT and 99% of blacks AREN'T voting for Obma because he's BLACK ONLY????!!!

Kim,

Thank god someone was there to shut down that$ 200,000,000 bridge in Alaska to help 40 people. If a liberal was in charge? Fugetaboutit!

I'm 100 percent against Obama! I like Palin but I'm not sold. I think she's a stand-up woman, and will have to see the RNC and her, in general to make a judgement.

Oh yeah, what Hansonman said.

Experience is hard to quantify. Abe Lincoln had two years in Congress and limited education and was a great leader in the American progressive tradition. George H.W. Bush had a long resume in public service and was a below- average president.

Consistency requires we all drop this issue.

We all need to admit that McCain's choice of Palin had a lot to do with her gender. Don't be naive.

As for her pregnant kid, there is little to do with it that is a political issue. But, Palin did oppose sex ed. classes, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools.

Palin originally supported the Bridge to Nowhere before not supporting it for political gain.

Critics of the GOP, people like me, should focus on issues.
