I must admit, I love football. My Dad loves football and I'm sure that's where my appreciation for the game started. I grew up with the Cardiac Cardinals in St. Louis. Went to a high school with a football stadium that seats 10-thousand and is known for its championship teams. Spent my four years at the University of Missouri helping the athletic department recruit football players. And now, my son loves and plays the game.

Still, I can't get over how scary the game really is. We all saw Tom Brady go down this weekend. A career at its peak is now on hold while he heals. Then word that a 16-year-old high school student from Holliston died Friday after being hit square in the chest during a scrimmage.

Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game. We certainly expect them while watching the NFL...but it's pretty tough to take when a young person is hurt while playing or even worse, killed. I still love the game, but every time I hear stories like these I stop and wonder: Is it worth it? Then I remember how many kids and high schoolers and college students and professionals are playing the game. Thank goodness, most of them walk off the field each week...some with their egos hurt, but, for the most part, their bodies are in tact. I love football!

It is good to see you talk about the high school student. It makes the Brady thing not important.

Our worsted nightmare has happened; Tom Brady is hurt, and not just hurt, but a serious knee injury and possibly a career ending injury. Hopefully it isn’t. As bad as Toms injury is, I can only imagine how sick the parents of the 16-year-old high school student from Holliston who died Friday after being hit in the chest during a scrimmage must feel. I know injuries are part of the game, but no one is prepared when someone gets hurt during the game and actually dies from their injury. I feel bad for both these parents. I have to feel for the poor young man who actually hit this young man which caused him to die. Can you imagine how bad he and his family must feel? A terrible situation for everyone involved the students, friends and families.

This whole thing with Brady pales in comparison to the loss of a 16 year old boy. One might wonder what will happen to the Pats now with Tom out. The Pats will survive. Maybe not another super bowl this year, or possibly this decade, but they will survive. The parents of this child will feel the loss of their son forever. The team mates of this child will be affected by this for a very long time. And the boy who was on the other side of the hit will be affected possibly for life. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. I can not imagine the loss of a child. I can not imagine seeing my son suit up for a scrimmage only to have it be the last time he will wear the uniform. The last time he will be doing something he enjoys. It was a tragic accident. One that will be remembered by many.

Skinow,
Why wouldn't I know? Because I'm a woman. As you put it, "PLEASE".

skinow,

OWCH!!!! Casting aspersions without even knowing the person or her qualifications is a little tough isn't it? There are a number of women who love sports and know quite a bit about them. Why so surprised?

Kim,
I thin Skinow is scared because a woman probably knows more about football than he does. I am a woman and I love all sports! Football is my favorite sport. I own several Pats jerseys and none of them are pink!
