Are you nervous about the economic situation in this country? I sure am. State Treasurer Tim Cahill was on the Fox 25 Morning News Friday talking about the trickle down affect and how the problems on Wall Street are already affecting Maine Street. Cahill says the state won't have enough money to pay its bills next week if a bailout doesn't occur immediately. When the state comes up short, it has to borrow money..but no one is lending. The Treasurer says cities and towns in the bay state won't receive the funding they are expecting... and that spells trouble in our neighborhoods. Our schools and fire departments. Our police stations and libraries. There will be layoffs and cut backs. The Treasurer says we are in a mess..and headed to a bigger one.

Please Washington, put Presidential Politics aside. Put personal wins and losses aside. Put the fighting and back stabbing and favor calling aside. We need our Government to work for us. We don't need finger pointing right now..there will be plenty of time for that. And I believe there will be plenty of blame to go around! But right now we need help and we need it fast!

Are you nervous about the economic situation in this country? I sure am.

I'm nervous they are going to do this illegal act....let the lenders go back and negotiate their loans an take what they can and stay solvent....and then if they don't bring them all in for investigation. This is very unconstitutional! they framers put clauses in the ~*CONSTITUTION*~...One was the Government should not get into owning any private business because of the influence on Congress an the Presidents decision making and basically turns us into CHINA...and the other part of the other clause their reasoning was if you start to bail out one business then you would have to bail out other business an set precedent! WE HAVE NO BUSINESS DELVING INTO THESE PRIVATE BUSINESSES...also isn't funny how all these business are basically CASHING THIER CHIPS OUT before this Administration ends....funny how they are saying they are broke...its real fishy....and how about a couple of the heads either of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac are negotiation's of getting house loans from "COUNTRY WIDE" Country Wide is not on my side! they were getting Government guaranteed pool money from these heads that work at Fannie Mae...it was in the news on FOX CABLE TODAY! this has to be one of the biggest swindles in American History i heard about Alexander Hamilton's unscrupulous ways with buying up I.O.U.S. from soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War and scammed all the soldiers by spreading a rumor the U.S. NOTES they they got with their lands I.O.U.S from the government would not be HONORED! and as the rumor spread up and down the east coast etc an the soldiers now farmers etc were getting set

GOT CUT OFF-
....were getting set up for the kill...Alexander Hamilton dispatched riders to go up and down the east coast to buy up JUNK U.S.NOTES for $10.. on the Hundred...then while the riders were buying up the notes he was influence peddling in the congress an got them to make the NOTES GARUANTEED FOR FULL FACE VALUE!!! he made Millions!!! When George Washington went to Alex Hamilton and confronted him about this Washington was pissed off!!! and Hamilton's reply said don't worry about it i will create businesses/factories an put people to work....it will be good for the country...Washington was still dis-pleased because he fought with these men an they got ripped off..............

Panicked is exactly how the politicians want you to feel. It's their way of making you look away from their failures. This will be done. We're Americans. We'll straighten it out, but only after proper debate. See below:

|Dictionary.com
Panicked:
noun . 1. a sudden overwhelming fear, with or without cause, that produces hysterical or irrational behavior, and that often spreads quickly through a group of persons or animals.

I agree, Kim; our leaders need to get on the stick and resolve this problem immediately. I am outraged at how our leaders are behaving. They have no consideration for the people they are elected to represent. Shame on them!!

I was at a back to school night at my son's high school yesterday, and already they have cut the arts significantly, and now they want to cut the musical instrument and vocal programs. We pay very high property taxes where I live, and the school superintendant promises no new taxes this fiscal year, but at what expense? Furthermore, how can towns already strapped for cash from the state deal with further cuts? Essential services such as police, fire, and social services will be cut, as well as education; andh how do we pay for our children's college education? It is very disheartening to see it all unfold.

As always, FisherCat, your knowledge of American history is impressive. Seems that there are a lot of Alexander Hamiltons out there fleecing us today. We need to step back, look at the Constitution, and get back to basics. It is our only hope.

Thank you WicHappyGpedia. What a perfect definition. A tiger causes a stampede among a thousand Zebra. MAYBE one will be taken down. It's worth the sacrifice. Let them fix the problem as I know they will and get on with it.

I am mixed about this. One side of me says do the deal and stop the stock market slide. The other side of me says be careful what we do now because the long lasting effects could be worse than the cure.

The problem is that very few people even understand the problem. Even the experts can not predict what will happen if they do X.

In addition this has become a political football and the clock is ticking toward sudden death. All we can do is have faith that cooler heads will prevail and the right choices get made in a timely fashion.

The problem, although more painful in the short run, will fix itself. Let the corrupt companies and their unethical CEO's with their bad business practices fail. Put the thieves in jail. Allow good companies, who are still standing by virtue of sound business practices, buy them up at a bargain prices. It may take a little longer but putting that much control in the hands of politicians is a failure before it gets off the ground. The so called "re-payment" is already being bantered about---How will they spend it.... More failed social programs --

Let the free market work--it will take more time-- Face it the government could screw up a one car funeral. It shouldn't be ours!

Kim,
What I really find disturbing is this is the leaders of our nation fighting like children.Put aside the party poltics and do what is right for country first. It is no wonder that other nations don't fear us when they see the bickering that goes on.

This entire situation is so frustrating. We teach our children that they must deal with the consequences of their poor decisions. Well, last I checked, banks are run by educated people with Masters-level degrees and higher. Shame on them for doling out loans as if they were lollipops in the interest (no pun intended) of a quick buck. We are witnessing what is becoming a socialist trend, with the US Govt. already taking over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who are involved in the majority of mortgages. I don't see anyone lining up at my front door waiting to "bail" me out should I or my husband lose our job. It's unfair. Nobody guarantees the working person's investment. Why should the bank's KNOWN risk be guaranteed now?

Kim,

What I find disturbing is that not one reporter or commentator on Fox25 has reported on S. 190, the bill authored by John McCain that is still sitting in Chris dodd's committee...that would have averted this mess....

All this is a result of so many being dishonest, untruthful, greedy, unrealistic, wanting something for nothing. Abandoning a strong honest work ethic and cheating at all levels. I'm not talking about politicians only, I'm talking about the general population. We need to be better people. If we change and become better people there will be good results. Throwing money at this problem will only postpone the inevitable consequences of a population gone morally amuck. Money is only a temporary fix. The long term and real cure is character improvement and personal righteousness. Sucking it up and understanding that lousy consequences follow poor choices and decisions. No politician can legislate morality it must come from within.

Fishercat I really appreciate your understanding and knowledge of American history. I'm sorry to learn that Mr. Hamilton was such a scoundrel. Taking advantage of his position foreknowledge and wealth to stick it to his fellow citizens. Some things just don't change. I wonder what his reward has been in the next life?

Chip, McCain didn't write the bill you mentioned. He became a co-sponsor over a year after it was introduced.

It's also not "sitting" in committee now, either, being ignored by Democrats. As this bill was introduced in a previous session of Congress, no more action can occur on this bill.

I am vehemently opposed to the big bailout of Wall Street. There has been a solution all along of how these institutions could have saved themselves some of the harm that is coming their way. One, when they saw they were beginning to experience some definite financial problems, perhaps they should have done like any normal industry in America usually does.... they could have frozen salaries and hiring, cut back on superficial fringe benefits given within the company, and removed the bonus system, especially those huge golden eggs given to the CEOS of the industry, until their own company stabilized. Instead of
being so greedy and taking back the homes of failed mortgages in such a multitude number in waves, they could have stepped up and rewritten deals to the homeowners as it became apparent, even a few years ago, that hello, Houston, we have a problem! Their own greed and lack of respect for anyone but themselves has led them where they are today. Now tell me, why I should feel obligated to aid THEM, who have treated themselves so well, put themselves first repeatedly, ignoring any problem until this moment, and feel the urgency to save them, that they have never once felt for the homeowners or little guys they have stepped on to get where they now stand.Let Wall Street live like the rest of America!

I agree with fisher.

Govmtlocust: Your blog is perfect. This is what a purely capitalistic society is all about.

Once we start bailing out companies, or as Fisher pointed out, the govt owning parts of private companies, we are leaning in the direction of communism.

Happy:

Why do you have a problem with Matty correctly stating the facts?

For someone so paranoid about communism still existing, I would think you would want this bill to be exactly right.

No, it doesn't mean there is no problem. To suggest I said there is no problem, Happyg, is a lie.

Chip's comment is clearly designed to place blame on Dodd, for something he isn't doing, instead of providing more information to readers of this blog so everyone can better understand this problem.
