Sometimes good intentions go terribly wrong!  I believe the members of the Board of Selectmen in Oxford, Mass, have good intentions.

At some point, the Board voted to move Halloween to a Saturday or Sunday if it falls on Friday.  The reason, safety.  Apparently the Board believes traffic increases dramatically on Fridays in Oxford and it's not safe to have the little people out going door-to-door.

Okay, I get the idea that on Friday night folks are out moving around more than they might be on... oh let's say... Wednesday.   I also know the chances of running into a drunk on a Friday night might be higher than... oh let's say... Monday.   But aren't most little kids out between 5-7?   Most drunks I've encountered are just getting started at 7:00... and what makes the Board members in Oxford think there are fewer drivers on Saturday night?

Listen, here's my suggestion: Remind drivers that Friday, October 31st is Halloween.  Put up signs, banners and posters.  Remind kids that they must wear reflective gear and can't just dart across the street.  And everyone be mindful that a safe Halloween is the only way to go... Oh,  and an October 31st Halloween is also the only way to GO!

I agree with you Kim! This is only going to make the town have MORE traffic, because people will come to Oxford to trick or treat from other towns, and get 2 nights in, just as we are going to go to another town on Fri. night. Plus it will cause MORE partying and drunk driving due to 2 nights of Halloween instead of 1. Also, the traffic is heavy all the time, so it really doesn't even matter. Obviously, the selectmen have nothing better to do, and I might need to rethink my votes next time around.

I have a better idea...do nothing. Let families do what families have done for centuries...care for their kids.

Parents, Let your children go out on Oct 31, then bring them to Oxford on Nov, 1 for some additional fun.

I understand the intentions, and I also understand people's upset. But if you're against changing the date, just say THAT--don't make a fool out of yourself by saying stupid things like, "what are they gonna do next - have kids open their Christmas presents on Thanksgiving?"

Yeah. That's what they're going to do. Because their afraid of all those kids who are going to be opening their presents in the road.

It's one thing to have a gripe, but man alive...learn how to argue your point the right way instead of always "reaching."

Where are the parents of these children that the selectman are worried about? What has happend to parental responsibility?

Plan 9 From Outer Space was not a poor science fiction movie rather it was a futuristic movie.

Why don't we make it a state holiday and all the politicians can show up as themselves and scare the little kids.

Parents are responsible for their children, not some Board members who don't seem to have more pressing matters to discuss. Halloween is October 31 and there will be years when it falls on a Friday or a Saturday. As far as traffic and drunks, they don't have a special day. Traffic is part of life and is steady at all times. Parents know how to handle their children. Let them be the ones taking responsibilty. Keep the politics out of it!

I think that Saturday night would be more dangerous for kids to trick or treat because most people do not work on Saturdays and tend to drink early. I think, with more people being home on the weekend, there will be more of a risk of getting hurt. Also, these people don't have REAL jobs (ones that you work on the weekend) so, of course they don't mind changing the date.
