There's a neighborhood in New Hampshire that is considering putting up security cameras.  The area, which is just outside Manchester, has recently been plagued by crime and violence.  Residents say they are afraid to use their decks and porches the trouble has gotten so bad.

The neighborhood association that has proposed the idea says the cameras will go straight to the internet, allowing police and other neighbors to keep an eye out.  Some residents think it's a good idea.  They claim it will allow the homeowners to take back their community.  Those opposed say it's an invasion of privacy.

I have mixed emotions about the idea.  I sure would like to see all streets safe and all communities crime-free... but at the same time, I wonder if this is a slippery slope.  Sure, if you're doing the right thing you have nothing to worry about, but what about mistaken identity?  What about the cameras being used to get back at neighbors who don't get along?

I think the concept is a good one.  I just hope they think it all the way through before putting them in place.

It's absolutely inevitable & 100% necessary, I'm afraid.
Personally, if "big brother" wants to point a camera on my house and yard, I seriously wouldn't object.
So long as I wouldn't be arrested for indecent exposure when I get dressed in front of the window, or when I occasionally go outside in my underwear during the summertime (VERY occasionally...)
I have nothing to hide.
I got a kick out of that shmoe on the Fox 25 Morning News this morning who voiced his concern about "them being able to zoom in and read (his) lips."
Dude, what are you talking about out on the street that is so controversial that you care if "big brother" knows about it? Puh-leeeze.
The only people who are worried about such things are LAWBREAKERS! Why do we concern ourselves about their protests? The heck with them! We can't arrest everyone guilty of a petty crime anyway.
Sheesh...last week I called the cops on some kids who were smoking pot in the parking lot where I work, and all the cops did was shoo them to the business next door!
How bad do you have to be these days to actually get into trouble with the cops?
So if you're doing something so bad that you're actually worried about being arrested...then maybe we ought to just arrest you on general principle!

Hi Kim, by the way my mother gave me the middle name Kimberly? its sort like a Boy Named Sue..Yes? LOL!!!

Do you remember how they caught the London Bus Bombers? there's my answer....C.C.T.V. and London uses everyday an even catches people doing malicious mischief....I thought i saw one piece about C.C.T.V. in London where they can actually talk to the people in their funny moments like littering...and a voice will come over EXCUSE ME MATE CAN YOU PLEASE PICK UP YOUR LITTER....LOL!!!!!!!!yes invasion of privacy is important to me...like when my local town police went to Florida and picked up a BRAND NEW THERMAL IMAGING DEVICE that can be portable or mounted in the cruiser...but the sticking point we protested against was then using as a drive by tool with out a warrant to thermal image your house! an see if you have pot growing or where your guns maybe or bodies may be inside you home....this new Military device picks up all gradations of heat that all objects give off...its the same technology that our troops were successful using in those blinding red sand storms heading into Baghdad...they enemy didn't realize our troops could pick them off by using this thermal imaging system an cleaned house with the snipers along the roads during black out conditions during the sand storms....so i do care about privacy in my home with the Police using this Thermal Imaging device as a drive by search of your home a total invasion of privacy with out a warrant to search using this device...its usually mounted in our Black Hawk Helicopters but can be used as a portable device...When y

If you are not doing anything wrong what is the problem? Is it any different than what Google is doing. If it can augment law enforcement and allow the officers to work on more pressing matters, what is the big deal.

They are on every corner in London. And afterall, Kim, we will soon be the next country to join the EU once your candidate is in place.

It seems like the people who live in this neighborhood want their cake an eat it. They want something done, and yet for some of them it seems like the solution of security cameras is worse than what’s going on. Why don’t they form a neighborhood watch association where they along with the police come up with some type of patrols in the neighborhood, or if the crime is that rampart and the police don’t have enough man power, then they should contact the Guarding Angels and ask them for help. The security cameras can be a last resort, but can also be a double edged sword.

Forgot another thing about the THERMAL IMAGING DEVICE it used all the time on traffic stops so they can tell if you have a bag pot lets say in your trunk or where ever....is this a warrant-less search? just throwing it out there....all objects give off heat they can tell exactly what in your car an most of the times in your house....This is a BIGGER ISSUE than C.C.T.V. your out in public in that scenario...

Like the cameras people put in their own homes that have caught bad things happening to children and other realitives, it could be a very important move to protect peoples property.

Id say if its come to that...that things have gotten so bad then yes cameras should be used to catch these moronic criminals in the act. The down side is...how many of those criminals will try the invasion of privacy defense. Not to say they would get away with their crimes but do we really need more drama in the news? I think that if people in that neighborhood are so afraid and so fed up then they need to do whats necessary to take back their neighborhood!

My neighbor has " security cameras" all around their house. Inside and out. Several are pointed directly at my house. I don't like it! I can't do anything about it. I am not doing anything wrong, I just like my privacy! They know everything that goes on at my house. I have to keep my blinds closed. I believe they should really think about putting these cameras up and the internet thing should go. From what I understand you were going to be able to zoom in, not good. I know I already live in a world of darkness on one side of my house I certainly would not like to live that way through out my house. I like to walk around in my underware as does my husband and that is my business not anyone elses to see. Cameras can do a great service when used properly.

momryan,

Those cameras that are pointing directly at your house is going to have a significant effect on you when you try to sell your house. Who in their right mind would want to buy it knowing their going to lose their privacy, unless their exhibitionists. Good Luck...

north dakota also does not have something else that all major urban cities have...and it is a far more important crime factor than any gun law that may or may not be on the books...it just can't be said though cause most are afraid to tell the truth about crime... it would be the kiss of death if you are a politican and therefore no one will say it publically.. but anyone who is honest and simply looks at the numbers knows what the truth is

If we had Judges who would enforce the laws that were enacted by the legislature that the cops enforce then we wouldnt need cameras as people would actually be afraid of getting locked up and PUT AWAY--besides, as was previouly mentioned on this post, the criminals would all figure out a way to beat the system (as they use it the most) and the good folks would wind up getting screwed (as is usually the case). Even if you get the cameras the judges will let the criminals off. Why bother?---time to change the property protection laws--shoot first, ask questions later.

I really don't buy that "if you aren't doing anything wrong then it isn't a problem" argument. We should all be entitled to privacy in and around our homes on our own property. We should be able to sit and relax at home and not worry that the police or the nosey neighbor next door is peeping into our homes. We have Bush doing illegal wiretaps, and cameras everywhere. Taking away privacy bits at a time so we don't notice it then all of a sudden we have no privacy at all. It needs to stop somewhere.
