WHO'S BETTER THAN ME WITH THE TROPHY? I get a lot of grief in this town for that statement which I uttered from Busch Stadium on October 27, 2004 after the Red Sox won the World Series. Say what you want, but at least I know how to handle a championship trophy.
Did you see what happened in Kitchener, Ontario on Sunday May 25th? Click here to watch the video. After the Spokane Chiefs beat the Kitchener Rangers to win the legendary Memorial Cup (the championship of Canadian Jr. Hockey) they were presented with the trophy. Chiefs Captain Chris Burton held the trophy over his head but as he tried to pass it on to a teammate he dropped the trophy and it broke in half!
The crowd booed. Spokane was the away team in this game. The good news? This was a replica trophy. The real Memorial Cup is in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
I may have had some fun hoisting those trophies in 2004 and 2007 but did I ever drop them? Of course not. So again, I ask you? Who's better than me with the trophy? Certainly not Chris Burton. (sic).
