The NFL has implemented a new code of fan conduct as of Tuesday August 5, 2008.  The league is now warning fans who misbehave at NFL games, that they can be ejected from stadiums and barred from coming back if they don't comply with their new code of conduct.

Good for them.  If you've ever gone to a Patriots game or any other NFL game you know that it is a huge committment, both in time and financially.  And while everyone likes to enjoy the game and possibly have a few beverages also, nothing ruins the experience more than drunken idiots who think they should be as physical or verbal in the stands as the players are on the field and have no disregard for other paying fans.   Players that break the rules on the field can be penalized and punished and now the same holds true for the fans in the stands according to the NFL.

The ban includes the following:

Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal.

Drunkenness and signs of alcohol impairment that result in irresponsible behavior.

Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.

Interference with the progress of the game, including throwing objects onto the field.

Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel.

Verbal or physical harassment of fans from the opposing team.

While much of this is common sense, often times fans don't use common sense at a pro football game, but now they will be forced to or they will pay a price.  The league says that the code of conduct will be mailed out to fans and also posted in stadiums.  The league also says that teams have the option of adding additional provisions to the code based on local circumstances.  I say good for the NFL.

I'm sure there will be people saying what about the first amendment, and I do embrace the constitution, but I agree with you on this one. Nothing ruins a good time, especially that of a die hard sports fan like an unruly belligerent, ignorant drunkard. Not to mention the vulgar language and gestures in front of little kids. Save it for the poker game!

Good luck enforcing this. The NFL are a bunch of hypocrites. You can't have brewerys be your major sponsors, sell beer at games, parade around half naked women on the sidelines, and expect the utmost of decorum from your fans.

The majority of the mayhem begins in the parking lots. I propose "Drunk-sniffing" canines be deployed on the Gillete parking lots with the offenders carted off to the adjacent Christmas Tree Shop, shackled to an old yenta, and be forced to shop for cheap Chinese imported junk until they sober up. They'll never misbehave again....Your thoughts?

Do the players have to follow them as well?

Things in Foxboro are vastly improved since Robert Kraft took over. Back in the late 70's Foxboro was like the wild west.

It wasn't bad when they played at Harvard Stadium. Those Harvard people really behave well.

To The Fox sports staff...no blogs about the new Jet QB. What about Tippet...did I miss a tribute on this page? If you failed to write one about Tippet, at least bounce mine to the front.

It will be interesting in some places like Pittsburgh, New York or Oakland where they tend to be rowdy how they take to the new code of conduct.
