Preferably white and give it to a mom on this day.  Why?  That's what Anna Jarvis wanted us to do. It's believed Anna is the woman behind Mother's Day.  She wasn't a mother herself, but loved her mother enough to come up with this idea of honoring our moms on this day.  As for the white carnation, that's what she thought would make a perfect gift because it signifies the purity of a mother's love.  And you know what.  She's right.

When I was a kid, I distinctly remember going out to my backyard, year after year and pulling almost every flower off my mother's beloved Lilac bush.  I would put them in a jar with water and crush the flowers to make her perfume.  And then I would go into her flower garden and pick her flowers and give her a bunch for Mother's Day.  She would look out the kitchen window and see the damage I had done and throw her arms around me and tell me how wonderful I was.  How pure is that!

Happy Mother's Day, Mom, and Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there!

And a message to my kids: Next year, along with the awesome drawings and the beautiful ceramic sculptures you make me in school, and how you fill my souls with the gorgeous smiles you give me every moment we're together, how about a simple white carnation next year?  Anybody else on board?

Hi Maria. You are absolutely right. Our mother's always love us unconditionally, no matter what we do!!!! I think letting and showing them how much we love them is the best gift of all!!!! You already know how I feel about giving flowers!!!

I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!!!! You deserve only the best!!!!

Have a nice evening!!!!

My 50th birthday is coming up on Friday the 16th, and since my boyfriend and I can't be together, I hope to be the receipiant of some flowers. For very much the same reasons as you mentioned about our mothers.

You know, Maria, the sad part about Anna Jarvis is that she actually spent the last few years of her life fighting to stop Mother's Day, once she saw how commercial it had become.

But still, commercial in actuality or not, the IDEA behind Mother's Day is still wonderful. Can't say I gave carnations this year, or any flowers for that matter, but I try to avoid the things that don't last in favor of the things that do.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there!

I did the same exact thing! The lilacs were my mom's pride and joy until i brought a HUGE bee in with them; after that, they were admired thru the window.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY MARIA!

Mother's Day is probably one of my most favorite days of the year. Today in particular was amazing (some in part to Lemanowicz totally hooking all us moms up with this FINE weather), but my kids are now old enough to do what THEY want to to let me know how much they love me. However, I always tell my kids EVERY day is Mother's Day, and Maria I'm sure you can appreciate. When they come home from school with that 100% on their spelling test we worked so hard to study, the unsolicited hug and kiss to say I love you, when they tell me mom this dinner ROCKS, that's mother's day at it's finest. BUT having said that today THEY knew it was 'my' day and from beginning til end made is all about me. Not an easy task for a 10 & 11 year old but they did. They said they want my day to be perfect and would be on their 'bestest' behavior!! I would have loved a white carnation too and I do think it's a simple but very symbolic way of acknowledging our moms .. Im on board!!! Can you remind us tho next year? lol.. Thanks SMILEY! ps .. hope you had a great mother's day!

Today my dad and I made our Mother's Day visit to my mom's gravesite. Lilacs and Roses. Her headstone is rose colored. It really represents the colorful, beautiful woman she was (is). This was always her favorite day. Not for the gifts but for the time spent with her family. Life is short  people! Honor your mother everyday!

I have to say I like the home made stuff for mothers day then anything you could buy in a store.

Every year my daughter who is now 17 makes me my card. I love home made cards and not only that its from the heart. She will crawl into bed with me and snuggle and tell me how much she loves me and asks me every year, when she becomes a mom will she be the best mom ever like I am to her? I tell her every year that it all comes from the heart and she will also be a great mom as my mom was to me.

Happy Mothers Day to all the motehrs out there~

Josephine, I think it's because lilacs smell so pretty...I used to snag a few for my grandmother myself. The scent just says "mom would LOVE these!"
