Before you jump all over me, I will say up front, it was John Edwards taking down John Edwards.  He just had a little help from the National Enquirer.  Where to begin with this sordid story.  Take your pick:  The National Enquirer breaking a story that ends up on the front page of the New York Times.  The Networks/news stations refusing to cover the story using the National Enquirer as a source.  John Edwards cheating on his wife who was in remission from cancer.  John Edwards emphatically saying he did nothing of the sort.  John Edwards saying he'll take a paternity test to prove he is NOT the baby's father or the woman in the case who's saying she'll never let her baby take a paternity test.

And should we even care. He's not a senator anymore.  He's not running for president.  He's a private citizen.  However, he is a big player (excuse the pun) in the Democratic Party, he did run for president, was on a vice presidential ticket and was very public with his wife's fight against cancer, not to mention the fact he was going to be front and center at the convention.  So I think given that, it's a story.  You say what?

BTW, check out fenwaydav's blog on this too

It is a story in as much as he is a public figure and a political figure who uses his morals as a platform. If you're gonna do that, make sure your lifestyle can support it. If a news reporter gets caught, hypotheticly speaking, it is not news unless they put their views on extra-marital sex out into the public.
As far as him lying about it when asked, that is just Human Nature. The lying doesn't bother me as much as the humiliation he is putting his wife through.

It's a story all right, but it's the same old story..........no?

I'm from NC and I never had any use for John Edwards. He's always been a slippery character in my book. He bought her off and the baby is better off with no father than with Mr. Edwards.

And looking back....the fact that he USED her cancer. The real story is his betrayal of American trust, his betrayal of the system he wanted to lead, and the fact that we are becoming immune to antics like his...

Wow if the Enquirer was right about this does that mean they're right about aliens landing in North Dakota (and no not the kind all the right wingers want to ship back to Mexico)? And yep it's definitely a story and the fact that he's obviously still lying about it will just drag it out even longer. There's no doubt that the kid is his and if that affair ended in 2006 like he claims and she gave birth this year that would be a world record for longest pregnancy. I don't care what political party you belong to, if you don't think this guy is a massive dirtbag considering all his wife is going through then you're kidding yourself. I couldn't believe someone could make trial lawyers and politicians drop even lower on the ethical totem pole.. but I was wrong (look out used car salesmen and telemarketers).

Maria,

I ask you, how can any politician ever think that he or she could ever have an affair with someone and think no one would ever find out about it? How stupid is that? Maybe John Edwards should have called President Clinton and asked him for his EXPERT advice on having an affair with someone before he actually got involved with this other woman. How stupid can he be? One would think knowing all of the Politicians who’ve ever been caught having affairs over the years they would think twice about it, wouldn’t they? Incredible isn’t it?

It still amazes me no matter how smart someone thinks they are, when it comes to common sense, they’re as dumb as a bag of rocks.

John Edwards always struck me as a slippery used car salesman. He is the type that will look people in the eye and lie to them all day long. He's a self serving empty suit with zero integrity, and this story doesn't surprise me in the least.

The fact that he tried to sugarcoat this story by saying his wife was in remission is sickening.

The scary thing is that he was able to run for president. But then again, so isn't Obama.

Jovanone is totally correct. Edwards knew the Enquirer was onto him and was arrogant enough to continue the affair thinking he won't get busted. Either that or he didn't care because he is "John Edwards".

First off, let me say that I concur with Chip on the fact that it was a magnanimous move to provide a link to fenway's blog, Maria. But it doesn't surprise me, because you've proved time and time again that you're a classy woman.

While I don't disagree that this is a story, I just don't think we need to harp on it.

I just think that too often stories like this one become all about the self-righteous hypocrites who are constantly on the lookout to shake their finger at another's bad conduct.

I'm not a democrat, nor am I a fan of John Edwards. But I didn't cast the first stone, and I won't be looking for one anytime soon.

Maria, Thank you for the honorable mention. I have wondered if the staff ever reads some of the comments or blogs. Time and time again you, Ock, Bob Ward and Kevin seem to always respond. I Thank you and Fox for giving me the outlet to voice my opinions and comments and an occasional fiesty debate.

We should care. I don't believe people start having affairs at his age, especailly when the wife is sick. He has been having these flings forever.
If the enquirer did not break the story, this guy could have had an appointed position. It was reported yesterday that there was buzz about AG.

Maria,
You are right, when you say John Edwards brought down John Edwards.
Sur the enquirer helped out, however if Edwards didn't do this in the begining there wouldn't have been a story.
If Edwards had thought with his brain instead of thinking with his ---- well you know, we the voters might still have respect for him.
His wife the mother of his legidimate children was sick sick with cancer, and this is how he says thanks to her?
To me he's just the rear end of the donkey.
However all that being said,
People in the position of being in the "SPOTLIGHT 24/7" need to really watch
their backs, they aren't like the "common folk" who can walk down the streets, do as they want when they want, these people are always under scruteny, whether it comes from "rag newspapers" or just everyday gossip.

What is even worse here is that the national liberal media did'nt pic up the story, more proof of the liberal bias in the media. It took what for the most part is a fake "rag" with made up stories, to get the truth out about another self-absorbed liberal elitist !

nomorehacks,

Um, buddy, you must be going to the bathroom a lot when you're watching TV, because it's practically ALL they've been talking about it. I was sick of this story within hours of its breaking.
I'm a conservative, but I just don't understand why we need to rehash the facts of this case over and over.
John Edwards was a naughty boy. He cheated on his ailing wife - abominable, yes. But I think we all know about it already, and everybody's spewed their disgust with Mr. Edwards...we're all "shocked" and "mortified" as the rest of us are incredibly righteous and morally-upright individuals fit to cast stones when somebody else misbehaves...yada, yada, yada...
Does anyone have anything new to say about this, really?
Plecch!

But what everyone, well maybe not everyone but
some still fail to realize is this guy Edwards,
did this in the begining.
It doesn't matter who broke what, what matters is this guy figured "I'M JOHN EDWARDS I HAVE 400.00 HAIR CUTS I CAN DO AS I WANT",
This guy did this while his wife was trying to come to grips with having Cancer.
If he wanted to find "A GREENER FIELD TO PLANT HIS FLOWERS" he should have told his wife
"thanks but I'm outta here",instead of putting her through the pain,of his actions now being put out so everyone knows his business.

As a cancer survivor, I have a little bit of a different perspective than most of you. I don't disagree with anyone that it was a stupid, embarrassing, awful thing to do. But so what that Elizabeth has cancer? How does that make it any worse than if she didn't? If my husband cheated on me, it wouldn't make it worse because I have cancer. It would certainly hurt JUST as much, but I don't think it would hurt more.

I wonder what would have happened if John Edwards wife cheated on him, would we all be so quick to sweep this under the rug so readily.

Graham: I think Nomorehacks is talking about the first time this story broke. The Enquirer broke this story many months ago. Jay Severns tried to get the public interested. Because it was an enquirer story, he failed.
The national media, including Brian Williams and the late Tim Russert pushed it aside as not credible.

Jay Severin also is trying to get the public to believe that Obama is a muslim, doesn't put his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance, and ... oooh, horror of horrors... doesn't wear a flag pin. I don't put much stock in what little Jimmy Severino has to say.

T.E.O.,

Gee, you mean someone didn't take the Enquirer seriously? For shame!

I think "ignoring the Enquirer" should be written next to "responsible journalism" in the dictionary, whether they were right on this one or not.
