I found myself with a rare night off Sunday night, and sat myself in front of the tv and just flipped around.  I couldn't stop myself.  I stayed on one channel for at the most 10 minutes, and moved around.  Remember, I don't watch tv at night, I'm on tv at night!  I was honestly driving myself crazy because during any commercial I would flip around and then stay there. I was like a cat with tinsel.  And then I remembered when I was a little girl in Groveland and I would get up turn the tv on and watch it warm up. And then I would love to watch it turn off down to that little white dot and go away. Wow, how far we've come. It's remarkable. Everything and anything on tv, on the internet.  But trust me, there are moments when I wish it was as simple as just turning it on, and watching one show at a time. The Lawrence Welk show, Maude, All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Starsky and Hutch, Fantasy Island. Remember the days?

I think this is your greatest blog ever. I feel like I am getting a glimpse of the real Maria and I like her.

Maria,

Remember when there wasn't anything on a certain channel except the test pattern making that awful humming sound? LOL Life was so much easier back then wasn’t it? Now, we have so many different channels to watch, and yet, still really nothing to watch. So, how far have we really come?

I can't tell if your response is tongue and cheek, but the truth is lucky10227, I talk about serious issues every single day and sometimes it's fun to talk about nothing :) This blog gives me that chance...

Maria, back in my day...just kidding...I do remember though having to adjust the rabbit ears , the vert hold and the horizontal for Bruins games etc. Don't miss that...but I do miss a lot of the old shows you mentioned...it seems like the writing was better back then...especially when it comes to sit coms. But I must say...mysteries are better nowadays. As for reality tv? It was simpler back then and in many ways better IMO.

It's pretty sad when there's a couple hundred channels and nothing on...Which is why I watch VERY LITTLE TV. Unless it's like Egypt Week on the Science Channel, normally I just watch the news on any given day.

Ock, don't even get me started on reality TV! I've got a roommate (sorta) now who's obsessed with it...I may just lose what's left of my mind!

Maria, you certainly were and we're all glad that you did. You have a better face for TV than you did for radio.

Mark, what about putting tin foil on the rabbit ears?

Maria,
Seems like everything was better when we had less info overload back then.

Crank up the DVR and record some TVland for
some of the great old shows especially
All in the Family it's Scary how relevant
the issues they dealt with back then are still
issues today.

Love the Blog and jovanone is right, watching the news sure is easy when you are the one delivering it.

I’m going to go way back into the time machine with shows like The Jackie Gleason show, the Ed Sullivan show, Dina Shore, the Andy Griffin show, Phil Silvers as Sgt. Bilko, leave it to beaver, car 54 where are you. OMG I’m getting old!!!! Those were great TV shows back then without all the swearing, unlike in today’s shows. Please tell me there’s some one out here who’s seen some of these shows. Please!!!!

There are a few of us out there who grew up with Ed Sullivan and The Jackie Gleason Show, Gun Smoke, Sky King, and my very favorite (first show I remember as a young child of 5) Captain Kangaroo- lol! I used to love the Andy Williams christmas specials too, and the yearly event of The Wizard of Oz, usually on a Sunday evening. Now you can rent the DVD anytime you want, and it doesn't seem as special as it did back then.
Great blog, Maria. It is nice to think back on simpler times when you actually had to get up from your couch to turn the channel!!

Gomer Pyle, USMC. Leave it to Beaver (of course I watched the reruns, I was too young to watch the new episoded lol). The Rifleman. Gunsmoke was my absolute favorite as a kid. Captain Kangaroo? Loved it. How about Major Mudd? Or Rex Trailer? I actually met him a few times as an adult. Pretty cool.

Maria,
How about F Troop, or on Sunday Mornings
It was Davey and Golieth(sp).
But it was great there was one tv and we had to watch what was on other wise we had to get up
and change the channel.
Also how come until Cable tv first came around
the reception wasn't really that bad.
Then as soon as Cable Tv came you couldn't get anything without the box.
Also tell Mark "you mean you had tv back in your day?"LOL LOL

Maria,
I am so sick and tired of you not giving Hawaii 5-0 the love and respect it deserves. You mention Lawrence Welk, Starsky + Hutch, Maude (MAUDE!) and yet no love to McGarrett? God that p*^ses me off. Thank God Jack Lord's not still with us, lest he have to read this outrageous blog! Outrageous.

The truth is Maria, I've always liked you as an anchor and this blog subject just confirmed what a straight forward, down-to-earth person you are. This may have just been a fluff subject to you but it came across as genuine and sincere and that you are an old fashion girl at heart. It just demonstrates why people can relate to you.

As parents of 2 little boys, we sometimes find ourselves slaves to the DVR. After they go to bed and it is the only peace and quiet we have had all day, we often sit in front of the TV both reading (her a novel and me the newspaper)and talking. Some might call us boring but like I said, we have very little quiet around here so we relish a little serenity...and mindless TV!

Back in the good old days when local news went from only 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and sometiimes shorter.

When the weekend always had the B team working.

Thankfully, now news goes all day and the weekend reporters are also the A team.

I second the nomination for Hawaii-5-O
Bookem Dano.
Also Bonanza,The three stooges, oh wait,
VB, Gene, and Doug, were to young to be on TV back then. LOL LOL

Get up and turn the TV on?! You mean there used to be a time when there were no remote controls? How medieval and barbaric! And I suppose to get to the TV to turn it on you had to walk 5 miles uphill through the snow. And what of these shows you mentioned? Aside from Starsky & Hutch, which is of course the Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson film that came out years ago when I was an infant, I've never heard of them. You made those up right? Lawrence who? Did these shows have sound? Color? And most importantly how did your husband allow you to gain access to the remote? Was there some sort of household coup? You never, EVER let the female have the remote! Otherwise you're stuck watching The View, Oprah or whatever is on Lifetime. And God help you if there is a Sex & The City marathon on some channel.
