And it's naked.  Right down to the last hair and pore.

Check out Newsweeks latest cover of Sarah Palin. It's super high definition and you can see everything on her face. Her smudged eye makeup.  Her eyebrows that have some stray hairs... Newsweek knew exactly what it was doing. Magazines do not put things on their cover without thinking about every last detail.

It simply is not a flattering picture of Palin.  But does it have to be?  It shows her up close and very personal.  And I think that was the point.  Unfortunately, we are all so used to seeing everybody's imperfections airbrushed out, that this was jarring and deliberate and I'm ok with it.  Here's what I'm not ok with.  I googled Obama Newsweek magazine cover.  And we didn't see every pore. Every stray hair.  Coincidence? I think not.

This has NOTHING to do, with whom I will vote for in November.  I am actually still on the fence. This blog is about a photograph and I want to know what you think. Do you think it's fair?  I should also say, as a woman who has been fortunate and unfortunate! enough to be in magazines I would not be happy with this photograph.  But I would also say, well that's who I am and what I look like and that's just the way it goes!

Maria; we have know each other for awhile and I can honestly say I have never seen a bad picture of you; articles, yes but never a bad picture. I think that this is more saying that she is under a microscope, as nobody knows much about her and she was thrust into the national spotlight; and for the early praise of her, now that some time has passed, some smudges are showing up. I don't think it was meant to show her physically as much as a picture of her personally.

Hi Maria,

I think we should all look in the mirror first thing in the morning and see how attractive we all look. I'm not a fan of Sara Palin, and seeing that she's not perfect isn't going to sway my vote either, after all, I'm no day at the beach either, and wish I could do more than just air brush out a few imperfections. God if that was all I had to worry about....LOL

To tell you the truth Maria, If you didn't say anything I would not have got so close. Now that you did, are her front teeth capped? Those are the glasses all the women are running out to buy? WHY?

I was killing time at Barnes in Braintree. Is that you in a Boston Magazine, the one with Brady on the back cover getting into his jet?

I go out of my way, in most cases, not to respond to political blogs on here. I could care less what other people's political opinions are, so there's no need to share mine either. But I'll say this much on this topic..for starters why are we comparing the Palin cover to Obama's? Compare her cover to Biden's if he has a recent one. Otherwise compare Obama's to a McCain cover. I've got one lying around from Feb 08 and McCain looks decent enough for a guy in his 70's. I'm thinking there was a little editing with that picture. And quite honestly I think every photo of every celeb/politician or whatever should go out as is. People are far too narcissistic these days. Once they realize they can't be a flawless piece of perfection like I am, the world will be a better place.

Maria, No I don't think it's fair that they pick Palin apart so much and nobody else.

After all, I must say though, we are all who are, and you get what you get. It's what's on the inside that should matter the most not what's on the surface or the eyebrow lines or lack there of. We all have imperfections.

I must say you always look so beautiful and natural in all the pictures I've ever seen of you. Have a natural radiance and glow about you all of the time, and you truly beautiful inside and out!!!!!!!!

This will not sway my decision one way or the other as to who I will vote for.

Everbody please remember to get out there and regisiter and vote. It couldn't be more important to do so than at these troubling times!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks shouldn't matter, but it can't be a coincidence that this is the first time I've seen an unflattering "zoom in" cover shot of someone.

Why are so many journalists and celebrities predictably liberal?

Maria,
There's no question that this cover photo is unflattering and completely intentional! I am disappointed that a magazine as popular and respected as newsweek would stoop to such low antics in the weeks before this historic election! Sarah Palin has taken a beating in the press, on television and in the print news as well. The SNL skits were funny at first, but its getting to be a little too much now. It wouldn't be so bad if the cast were poking fun at everyone in an equal manner, but they are not! I hope McCain/Palin win this election and she has the opportunity to prove to everyone just how smart and savvy she truly is!

Honestly, I like the picture. Here's my take: Republicans and Palin herself have gone to great lengths to show Palin as 'one of us', a 'hockey mom'. Well, first I'd like to say, I'm fine and dandy with that. Second, this portrays it perfectly. 'Regular folks' dont' have the time or funds to spend hours on end at a spa perfecting their skin. They don't have that kind of time to do it at home either. 'Regular folks' don't always have time to rush out and make the eyebrows perfect again as soon as a hair or two go out of whack. 'Regular folks' put on their makeup in the morning and by late afternoon or so, it is smudged. We don't have time to fix that either. If anything, this picture reaffirms in a physical manner what Palin has been saying about herself all along.

I think she looks pretty. Maybe she doesn't look "perfect", but she has a bright smile, and a gleam in her eye. Some of us should be so lucky to have THAT be our "imperfect" picture.

Maria,
Even if you strongly disagree with Palin, you have to agree she is an extremely attractive woman. Most covers are a product of Photoshop. I think in fairness to Palin this photo should never hit newsstands. This is just another stunt of a liberal magazine trying to focus on Palin's "inexperience". The Obama campaign is far from perfect. I'm not saying cancel your subscription to Newsweek magazine, but the photo is clearly tasteless!

Magazines have done this before and will do it again. Please don't act shocked or surprised.

Is the blog question sexist though?? If this were a closeup of a male candidate, we might say 'bad picture'. But a female candidate and we are supposed to expect airbrushing??

Palin, or her press people should have been a little more aware that something like this could happen.

In case they haven't noticed, the MSM hates her and loves Obama.

They also should have been forewarned by John McCain's experience with that other ragazine, Esquire.

Of course, we might simply acknowledge that Amerifda is decidedly more sexist than racist...

She's absolutely beautiful...whether she has wrinkles or not..just like you, Maria! I know that as a woman in her early forties, you have a few wrinkles under your foundation...but I know that if they took a similar photo of you, you'd still be breath-taking!
Of what magazines did you grace the pages, Maria? How come I've never seen them?
No ill-intentioned magazine could possibly make women--who are as stunning as you and Sara Palin--look unattractive. Uh-unh...can't do it...

It is fair if they put the same close up of Biden on the cover.

To tell you honestly, I think the photo is great. I wish someone would take a "bad" cover shot like that of me. She looks fabulous. And after 5 children. Go Sarah.

I worry more of a perfect picture as that is when the flaws really show.

I actually put a similar kind of picture of me here on myfoxboston as my avatar until fenwaydav told me it was too hideous and entreated me to take it down.
It was a photo I took of myself when I first woke up and had mad bags under the ol' opticals. Sarah definitely looks better than I did.
BTW Chip I don't wear a vest...har de har-har...:^]
