I know  the economy is tanking, the race for President is getting uglier and the states economy is in the toilet, which is why I want to talk to you about Halloween costumes.  Not your kids, but yours, when you were a kid.  My beautiful mother dug up all these pictures of my beautiful sister and myself in our costumes.  Priceless.  I was a marshmallow white shirt white skirt white face white wig,  one year I was Dolly Parton because we had a nice long blonde wig and nerf balls to complete the outfit :)...  I love telling my kids: "Back when I was a kid, we didn't buy costumes we made them.! And this year, that's what they are doing.  A baseball player and skateboarder.  And in this economy, that's just fine with me and of course it soothes my nostalgic heart.  So share.  What was your very best, most memorable costume as a kid?

Maria, Believe it or not I was a smore for Halloween. My costume was made up of two sides of a cardboard box, to dark brown pieces of poster board, and cotton for the marshmallows. I was also Mary Poppins one year, umbrella, hat and all.

Never had anything overly memorable costume-wise when I was a kid. Usually just the basic stuff like some sort of athlete or something. The better ones came from my adult years and most are too inappropriate to talk about publicly. I think I'm going as Manny this year. The first half of the night I'll have on a Red Sox hat and jersey and slowly limp from bar to bar. Then I'll change into a Dodgers hat and jersey and magically be healed. Then I'll be running from bar to bar (or stumbling briskly).

Maria! I need something to take my mind off this stressful Patriots game.....

Here's my most favorite costume: I was gum stuck under a shoe. I wore all pink & tied a sneaker to my head. So simple. yet so fun!! =)

My most memorable costume as a kid? Hmm. Has to have been the year I was Elvira. That was pretty awesome, but not as good as the costume I've had every year as an adult.

I was once a bride with a cotton yellow wig. And I was surprised when people recognized me! I thought I was in disguise. When we couldn't come up with a costume, we would just be a hobo.
I made my son a Powers Ranger costume. Really out did myself. He played with it for a week before Halloween, and then the day of halloween wouldn't wear it. He wanted to wear a ripped sheet like his brother! D'oh!

Maria,
My most memorable costume was dressing up
as Frankenstien.
No wait I'm sorry that was my Senior Yearbook picture,my mistake.
Oh I remember it was dressing as a hobo, the Hula Hoop, Dad's big jacket, covering and suspenders to hold the hula hoop up.
I didn't need nerf balls, the hula hoop covered everything LOL LOL

Maria, Back in the stone age when my little brother and I went trick or treating, we relied of good ol FW Woolworth. Those same stupid boxed costumes around today were there than. One piece tie in the back outfits and a plastic mask that made you sweat was the costume de jour. My mother had two left hands and very little imagination when it came to that. Years later when I was on my own, making something found at the bottom of Mommy's closet became routine.

Anyone remember the big Tylenol scare after someone spiked a bottle of it with cyanide-?
I went out dressed as a bottle of Tylenol that year...I figured it was causing so much fear amongst the public--what could have been more frightening?

BTW, my mom was really, really angry with me...but I made the costume all by myself! I think I was ten...maybe eleven-?

I remember going out as Superman, my favorite crime-fighting character. Plus, my birthday came close to Halloween, so my birthday parties were combined with Halloween, so everyone came to my party dressed up as something, my own mother included; She dressed up as a Martian, with a green jump suit, and a tin-foil hat, and green makeup. She was a hoot!

My favorite was the year I dressed up as Gene Simons from Kiss. My brother did my makeup and helped me make the boots. I really looked good and had the hardest time walking that year.

What happened here? A Maria Stephanos blog-posting with under 50 comments? Where the heck is everyone??
Oh...right...some guys are running for president, and some beloved baseball team is tanking this year's chances at getting to the World Series...
...Guess people aren't interested in Halloween this year-?
...Time for a political blog, Maria... ;)

I have severl costumes. My husband went as a hyperdemic needle the year all the medical waiste washed on shore. We went together as Fred and Wilma Flintstone. As for my children I have always made their costumes. They started as skunks, puppies, princess, and snowgirls. These past few years as they have gotten older we have moved on to zombies, vampiers, miss America, and red necks. They have so much fun making them with me. What great memories we can give our children.

Maria,
I also am wondering , You write a Blog,
and after 2 days you only have 14 replies,
how come, what's wrong, why aren't people writing back?
Is it that everyone is to busy making costumes, or planning SCARY PARTIES?
INQUIRING MINDS NEED TO KNOW
But unlike what Graham said,
he said you need to write a political blog.

GOD NO MARIA, FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY, DON'T DO IT,WE DON'T NEED ANYMORE POLITICAL BLOGS.
THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING,ANYTHING,
A Blog about telling jokes, everyone tell jokes, and a prize goes to the best joke
(prize could be a fox 25 hat).

The hobo was a big one when I was a kid. My best ones were as an adult also. I remember one year I went as a vampire. I know, not very original. It was before I was married. My friends and I went to a party and afterward I went to my now husband's house. He was asleep so I shook his shoulder to wake him up and when he saw me he damn near went through the roof. I scared the living daylights out of him. It was really funny.
One year when my oldest son was little he went as a can of coke. I got some red fabric, sewed it up, made the word Coke out of some white felt, cut some cardboard in the shape of a pull tab (those over 35 should remember them) and covered it with aluminum foil. It was such a big hit I made one for myself the following year.

I went to a house party with a bunch of friends years ago who were dressed up as hippies, or, maybe not dressed up, anyway, there was a girl there who was dressed up as Elvira, and boy, oh boy, you never seen so many horny hippies around one person all night in all your life, what a great costume.

Maria, I swear, if you listen to Graham and post a political blog, I will dye my hair back to its natural color and leave it that way for the rest of the post season!

A witch. I always wanted to be a witch. Every year, I was a witch. Even recently, I was a "good witch" and won $100 for my effort!

ok ok. No political blog for now. I promise. And it's not the number of posts... it's the quality and these are great. Tylenol, hyperdermic needle? Come on it doesn't get better than this.

I'll make a deal with you guys. Let's get this blog to 50 posts. Let's bombard it. It will be fun. We can talk about food :)
