I'm sorry, but if you're going to be a judge on American Idol, you've got to do your homework! Paula clearly didn't do that before Tuesday night's show. When commenting on Gina's rendition of "Love Child," a number one hit in 1968 for Diana Ross and The Supremes, she told Gina it's a "happy song" and should be sung that way.

Happy? This is a song about a child born out of wedlock and the struggles and torment such a scenario can create. I'm NOT condemning illegitimate children or their parents, but I am asking why Paula didn't have a better understanding of the lyrics. If you're going to criticize someone...at least know what you're talking about.

Mark, are children born without benefit of married parents still referred to as "illegitimate"? I have grandchildren who were born to unmarried parents, and I can't imagine that their lives would be any less legitimate than mine or yours. Sorry. I just felt the need to vent. I do, however agree with you about the song. I was a junior in high school then, and I remember it well.

Kayleisnana,

Point well taken. The word "illegitimate" is used in many on line references when talking about the song, its content and history.
Thanks for the response.
