Can someone explain to me why professional athletes drink and drive? Is it because they feel invincible? What's it going to take to make them wake up? Perhaps the death of one time Red Sox product and St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock. Hancock was killed early Sunday morning in Missouri when his SUV hit the back of a tow truck parked on the highway to assist a driver from a previous accident. Tests revealed his blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

Now, we all know you shouldn't drink and drive no matter who you are...but for professional athletes, who makes millions, not to plunk down pocket change to hire a chauffeur for the night defies logic. Not only could it save their lives, but the lives of others as well. On Friday the Cards announced they've banned beer from the clubhouse in the wake of Hancock's death. A good start...but a better move would be to counsel players on the consequences of their actions, to show them that despite being professional athletes, they're human, just like everybody else.

Mark I have no respect for athletes for drink and drive, also the morons who have to have guns and think they are in a gang. I also hate athletes who sign contracts and then think they deserve more before their contract is up and damand more money or they will sit out the season. I think if they want to act this way the owners have got to set down laws banning them from playing for 5 years if they break contracts and break the law. If you ban them from doing stupid things they will learn when they have to get a real job. Also if they are banned for 5 years they can not work as a announcer on TV unless they don't want to play ever again.

I am the mother of an high school junior who was not drinking and survived (with no more than a seat belt burn) the catastrophic, speeding, slid-off-the-road-into-a-tree crash of a drunken driver on Christmas night, 2004. I don't question God, but I wonder why we were spared and so many others find themselves in ICU, funeral parlors and lighting candles at tree stumps. Thanks be to God, because, by any other arithmetic ....
