The Live Earth concerts have come and gone... but the true measure of their success won't be known for the next several months. Al Gore's global concerts certainly provided a lot of entertainment value but how much action people will now take against global warming remains to be seen. Hopefully it's a lot.

Watching some of the endless hours of coverage I couldn't help but feel bombarded by all the ads though. Some were creative, especially the clerk and customer trading slaps to the face over the use of plastic bags, but most were filled with statistics that began to run together after a while. The amount of similar ads back to back to back made you reach for the clicker as soon you sensed another run of PSA's were in the offing. However, the day did bring awareness to a problem we all can try and help resolve... now it's time for everyone to do their part.

I am nearing my 6th decade on this planet, and from even a young age my folks implanted in the minds of 6 children, that if you purchase something, make full use of it, and then dispose of it properly. We were so poor at the start, that my father was working 3 jobs through the 50's & 60's. My father believed that he is the 'bread' winner, and a proper place for at least one of the parents, is the raising of children. To make a long story short, recycling we have always done even if there was no place to recycle to. We would purchase merchandise that would allow us a second use.. Heating was done in fired up boilers in the winter, we had one, so paper,cardboard,etc..would go in then logs. Recycle clothes/hand me downs..but unless you are or have been in the realm of poor, many people will not appreciate what I write. We are a very wasteful country. We throw out just as much as we eat. If it isn't new, or isn't 'hip'(whatever words they use today), then they want new, and they want what is 'fashionable'. If people took their clue from WWI and WWII, in the US, then maybe we might be in a better situation. Recycle Recycle. Solar,Wind,Hydro, and GeoThermal. The technology is there - go to Holland.

JustinFranklin, we'll never be able to reach the power demands of the United States using solar, wind, or hydro power. What the former veep is doing is admirable only in that it gets us talking about the problem. Perhaps you are correct. If we live like we did 60 or more years ago, perhaps we'd be in better environmental shape. That means no cell phones, home computers, ipods, commercial air travel, central air... you get the picture. It isn't going to happen. Your point is valid, the technology is there. Funny thing is, the more knowledge we get about how we are changing the climate, if we are, the more we do things that would hurt it.

One more.. if the pres can use Geo-Thermol then why not the population? Let's look at wind .. some homes, and many businesses have ontop for ventilation purposes, a wind turbine that ventilates the attic space. It is in perpetual motion, why this cannot be used? Anything is better than nothing.

Mark, "the day did bring awareness to a problem we all can try and help resolve... now it's time for everyone to do their part." Unfortunately a lot of people are not going to give up miniscule of their lifestyle, because many will say, "one person can not affect it". Unfortunately many of the rainforest are being destroyed each day. I saw a satellite picture at night of all the fires in south america, where they were burning forest. Scientist have theorized that many of the plants in these forest, may hold the secrets of curing many diseases. Our lives are depending upon the oxygen they emit, and the carbon dioxide they take in.

I am honored to have a meteorologist as yourself reply to my statement. Yes, you are correct, it would take people suffering a little, although I do not think that drastically to save on fuel oil. From what I understand and have seen on the Science channels..which I am avid fan.. is that in Holland households can save some money by personal wind powered stations on their home. They are not the massive lots like out in the midwest where you see cattle ranches loaded with them, however I think anything in any scale is worth doing that would save any amount of energy that we waste now. Methane gas use to be a waste byproduct until someone clever enough decided not to waste it. IF Brazil can establish an energy policy then the United States can do the same. However, the oil companies have a monopoly and the car manufacturers are slow on the uptake. They are the ones that drive our need for oil. We cannot go back, high sulfur coal was being used more then, however with this administrations policy towards that, he allows it to still burn.

The cutting down of trees, and as you know as a scientist that without the ocean and trees, we are only lessening the amount of oxygen in our air we breathe, it also makes more CO2 emissions, as found through the Polar icecap series that was recently on the science channel. We are releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere, which causes more warming. So as long as we have the deforestation and building of more concrete and roadways, we will be continuing to lose on what is needed.
No, we will not meet the power demands, however if we could stand by and do nothing, and just wait instead of using a multiple power solutions, we lessen the amount of oil needed, and high sulfur coal.
