A true legend of comedy passed away this weekend. George Carlin was my introduction to comedy with an "edge". My friends and I would listen to his album over and over again especially the part about the seven dirty words you could not say on television. Of course the door was usually closed so no parents could hear them being uttered...but no doubt they heard plenty of laughing from my friends and me. Carlin had that uncanny ability to take observations of everyday life and turn them into something truly funny by offering a perspective we'd never considered before.

However, I must tell you his act in recent years seemed almost mean spirited with numerous attacks on modern day America to the point where it was more annoying than funny. In fact, after watching his new special on HBO last month I came away with not only a lot of laughs, but also with a sense that the 71 year old was morphing into a whining, bitter, old man. Still, I hate to see anyone leave us so suddenly, especially someone who made people laugh so hard for so many years. To the counter-culture hero of comedy I say...rest in peace

Mark, I saw him at the Hampton Beach Casino about 15 years ago and he was hilarious. You're right, his latest stuff isn't that funny. He seemed like he just complained more than cracked jokes. I was shocked to hear of his death, I thought he was doing OK.

Carlin one one of my first "Live' comedy performers, and i agree that he took routine things and made you look at it in a different light. However, I don't agree with you about the mean / bitter part. I think he saw the wrong in things and, in his own way, tried to enlighten us; after so many years, he was probably just frustrated at how the world is turning out. Think of what his reaction would have been to the Gloucester situation, or if Hilary became president. God Bless, George!

Be sure to watch Leno and tape Letterman. I am sure both will have nice tributes. Brian Williams just did a nice segment. I forgot George was the first host of SNL.

Ock I can't believe you wrote "RIP George Carlin" and "Annoying" in the same blog. He did and always spoke the truth...He was an assest to the way people should think and he will be missed...I saw him front row in 2005 and even those he got older he still "ALWAYS" spoke the truth...RIP George Dennis Carlin...I will as well quote you forever...

Mark,
George was a really funny funny guy,
you had to understand some of his jokes they didn't just jump out at you.
However on a lighter note can you picture him now up in heaven, with "the big guy"
and the big guy says" GO AHEAD FUNNY MAN MAKE ME LAUGH"
RIP GEORGE

I was lucky enough to have a nodding aquaintence with him. He was a major influence in my own comedy writing. He was brilliant and always made you think!

You'll be missed George!
Thanks for all the laughs!

I saw him live at the opera house (?) back in the 80's. He was incredibly funny. I hope he has the 7 dirty words etched on his tombstone and that his casket is big enough so he won't lose his "stuff".
RIP George, you were the greatest!
